Judging from information recently gathered this apears to be a Afghan(Afghanistan) Khyber sword or knife made in the 18th century. Blade is in excellent shape(with some surface rust) and is approximately 22 inches. The overall length is 26" It is mounted with a brass and horn handle. The scabbard is possibly made of wood or layered paper covered with cloth that has been painted or tarred. The scabbard has a brass ring in the middle and a brass tip that has metal punch and engraving work on it. The blade also apprears to have lettering near the handle. Buyer buys as is. The hilt and penannular rib is flanged to take inlays, which is a more unusual feature on these types of weapons. The blade is heavy and well preserved with a narrow and very prominent midrib. The patination along the edges of the break suggest it was broken in antiquity, most likely for ritual purposes. The sociopolitics of this area are complex, with repeated waves and invasions of Medes, Cimmerians and Persians, amongst others, but the culture thus created is remarkable for its superb control of metalworking. There are many styles, but the best-known pieces of bronze from this area are anthropomorphic and zoomorphic pieces reflecting religious and secular tastes, as well as weaponry and utilitarian items that were buried with the deceased in tombs across the Zagros area. It was nonetheless viewed as a precious resource, and ... morewas used alongside iron once this metal became available, for while its qualities of hardness and durability were recognized, it merely made bronze a more socially exclusive material. The hallmark of Luristan wares is the tendency to elongate the necks, tails and bodies of the animals to produce graceful curves and arches. The re-discovery of the splendor of Luristan metalwork began in the 1930s and made considerable progress after World War II. The absence of relevant written records makes their complex imagery difficult to interpret in specific religious terms but it is likely that they represent local deities of some kind. It has been suggested that such elaborate bronze items must have been the preserve of the tribal leaders, a warrior class with the means to equip themselves and their households for war. This elegantly wrought spoon may originally have been used to serve wine or food. In the modern age. We hardly think about such utensils that we might handle several times in the course of a day. Yet in the presence of this ancient spoon-whose design has hardly been improved upon through the centuries-we gain a new awareness of the everyday objects that surround us.

This is a superb limestone mould from ancient mesopotamia. From one of the main semitical civilisations. It was originally purchased from an antiquities dealer in Israel and is believed to date to 1800 BC or thereabouts. These are very hard to find. It features a lion devouring an Ibex and is simply beautiful– a great example of the frequently observed fact that these civilisations were so much better at decpicting animals than people. It is one of the pieces from my antiquities collection that I held onto, but is now for sale. From Ancient Egypt. During the Roman period, a couple of thousand years ago, comes this beautiful statuette fragment. The subject is Harpocrates, the child Horus, with his chubby infant cheeks and mysterious expression. Harpocrates counsels silence, and, I suppose, caution. He became very popular all over the Roman empire as a domestic god. Come to think of it, I have found him pretty useful myself at times: He's made in red-orange terra cotta. A hand-written copy of an Old Assyrian promissory note in which a female slave is pawned for 1/2 mina(ca. 0.6 lb or 0.29 kg) silver. The original clay tablet was excavated in Anatolian Kultepe(ancient Kaneš) by Prof. Bedřich Hrozný in 1925 and dates back to 20th-18th century BC. Today. It is deposited at The Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. The text states that Inaya paid 1/2 mina silver to Aššur-taklaku for Šašnina. His female slave. Aššur-taklaku will pay him back in 2 months, otherwise he will pay an interest of 1 shekel(ca. 10 g) for each additional month. When he pays back, Šašnina will belong to him again. The text is written on the obverse. Lower edge, reverse and upper edge of the tablet. The layout of the text is kept as on the original tablet. Rare ancient bronze age zoomorphic pot C 2000 BC On offer is a superb ancient early Bronze age period ceramic pot with superb zoomorphic fish pattern. It also has other types of patterning as you can see in the photos. I have not cleaned this as don't want to damage the patterns. HOLY LAND LARGE MBA“CHOCOLTE ON WHITE” AMPHORISKOS Large“Chocolate-on-white” Amphoriskos; rendered in light tan clay with white slip over whole and applied reddish-brown(chocolate" decoration; pirifom body standing upon splayed foot; cylindrical neck with funnel mouth flanked by twin high-arched strap handles. Decoration to upper body only. Consisting of motif of inverted elongated triangles interpersed with sets of three vertical lines to shoulder with single band above and three parallel bands below; similar band applied to outerface of rim with a repitition of the three vertical lines in radial disposition to interior of mouth; each handle with series of vaguely horizontal lines to outerface. This piece belongs to the so called“Chocolate-on-White” class of pottery which was produced during the Middle Bronze Age within Palestine. The ... morewhite slip is typical of the period and marks a strong innovation in pottery production given that prior to this the use of reddish-pink slip was predominant. The decoration is exceptional; the white slip was applied whilst the vessel was being turned on the wheel. In order to obtain a more even result. Hand built bowl is rich for its iconography painted in deep red and brown slip on a cream ground. The interior features a large JAL sign also known as a mat sign referring to all woven materials- finely woven textiles, plaited hair, twists of rope, in addition to the reed mat which was the symbol or royalty. Surrounding the JAL glyph is a procession of birds- possibly turkeys as these were domesticated by the Mayans- with worms hanging from their beaks. Birds were associated with Mayan lords and shaman as well as with the deity figures associated with leaders of local tribes. Bird ornamentals were an integral part of the headdresses worn by Mayan lords as these winged creatures played a significant role ... morein mystical and ceremonial life of these ancients. On the exterior of the bowl is a series of six seated figures bending forward and presenting their large red hands in a pantomime-like gesture that suggests they are making an offering to a supernatural entity. I aquired this from a collector who is ex military and was working as a contractor in Afghanistan the past several years. He collected all over Afghanistan and some of his best finds where purchased by high end NY galleries.
