Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animals neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheeps neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. This artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. Whetstones are some of the most characteristic of all Luristan bronzes. And are composed of a bronze handle, with stone grinder. Two cuneiform tablets - Ex. Tullett Coll., please see description before bidding
Two cuneiform clay tablets. The one which appears to be whole is either very heavily restored or a forgery. 4.4 x 3.8 cms; if it is restored, it uses a duplication of the text from one side to create the same text on the back. The second example is roughly 3.2 cms but utterly crumbled/eroded within the plastic folder- beyond help in my opinion but I could not bear to throw away something like this and only hope it may be of use as a study aid to someone. The crumbled example has a dealer's ticket from George Lambor, a respected and well-liked dealer active in the 1960's-1980's in the UK(and co-founder of the Antiquities Dealers Association) Both tablets come from the Dorset-based collection of the late Ken Tullett, actively collecting a vast array of smaller objects during the 1970's-80's. One of the finest ancient spears that we have handled. This large Persian Luristan spearhead is a beautiful example of its type and dates to the Near Eastern Bronze Age. Around 1400- 1200 BC. This elegant yet powerful blade survives with complete edges and is of typical lanceolate form. With pronounced mid-rib and long tang with a rats tail curl at its end. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. An ancient Sasanian carnelian seal of a rooster. Dating to around 500 AD. The cockerel was not a common motif in Sasanian art, and its appearance on stamp seals such as this is relatively rare. Set on a beautiful carnelian stone of deep red. The bezel carved with a standing cockerel in the classic, elemental style of Sasanian seals. The stamp perforated through the centre for attachment to a necklace in antiquity, now long since perished. Worn as both a symbol of authority and as a conduit to sympathetic magic. Stone seals were popular in the Persian Near East during the Sasanian period. The rooster was revered by the Zoroastrian Sasanians as a servant of the god Sros against sorcerers and demons. This is a single antique ladies shoe that may have been museum inventory as it has a label and catalog number inside. This tiny shoe is 7" long and 2 1/4" wide at the ball of the foot. It has a leather sole with an upper that has a cotton fabric base with weaving over the cotton. The toe is decorated with a butterfly applique(dark velvet) blue ribbon trim around the edge of the shoe. The label reads"Cingalese Shoe" and is numbered"117. Antique Primitive Old Cloth Persian Middle Eastern Doll - Woman With 2 Babies
This is an absolutely wonderful old cloth middle eastern Arabic doll that my elderly Iranian neighbor brought back from Tehran in the 1940s. I do not really know anything else about this doll except that Fatemah said it was hand made and she had bought it at the market in Tehran before she and her parents came to America where her father taught at University of Pennsylvania. As you can see in the photos the doll is quite old and not in perfect condition. The legs are actually wooden twigs wrapped in string. The face is absolutely beautiful yet very simple. The mother is holding two babies. the doll measures almost 10 inches tall. I wish I knew more about this doll. I try to show everything in the photos.
