A well provenanced. Ancient, Near Eastern pottery jug dating to approximately the 2nd millennium B.C. A beautifully modeled. Ovoid, pinkish, buff pottery jug. With wide, splayed neck and flared mouth, flat circular base and ridged handle. Bands of geometric decoration adorn the shoulder, neck, and handle of the jug in black paint. Height: 4 inches. A well provenanced. Bronze Age pottery vessel from the Persian Empire, dating to approximately the Early 1st millennium B.C. A dark red vessel of biconical form with raised rim and circular. Flattened base. Stamped cruciform, or star shaped detail adorns the shoulder while undulating patterns decorate the rim of the vessel. Diameter: 5 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Consisting of two connected globular jars, each with looped and molded handles, slender cylindrical necks and everted mouths, and two outwards sloping feet. With a long cylindrical ridged socket and bulbous body, with multiple thick bosses radiating from the upper shaft. This striking weapon was produced by the Elamite society of the ancient Near East. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite individual. In all likelihood this facinating artefact was intended to be worn as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for carrying out ceremonial sacrifice. The Bronze Age peoples of Elam in south-west Persia were a warrior-society about which relatively little is known.
