Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Abstract Faces Mace Head - 1000 BC
An extremely rare ancient Near Eastern figural bronze mace-head. Dating to the 3rd-2nd Millennium B.C. The only such example we have seen on the market. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket, bulbous body and blunt projections. The body of the mace decorated circumferentially with four standing stylized humans. The figures face out, with circular staring eyes and with prominent, angular noses and open mouths. The hands placed on hips/breasts with arms bowed. The function of this rare weapon is mysterious. Possibly a weapon. Elaborately decorated as a display of wealth, or alternatively a purely ceremonial piece, for carrying out sacrifice. For a figure of similar style, identified as a female holding her breasts, see Moorey, Ancient Bronzes Ceramics and Seals. 1981, LA County Museum, p.26 fig.42. Length: 4 1/4 inches. Condition: ... moreExceptional condition. Unrestored. Beautiful patina with azurite inclusions. Provenance: Ex. Sackler collection. Arthur M Sackler 1913-1987 was one of the pre-eminent collectors of the 20th Century. As well as being a major philanthropist and patron of the arts. His collection was rich in Chinese art, small portions of which have been sold over the past 10 years. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Mace Head With Snake Decoration - 1000 BC.
A beautiful ancient Luristan Persian bronze mace-head. Dating to around 1350-1000 BC. Luristan weapons are renowned as being both highly imaginative and advanced for their period. This remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well provenanced example, coming from one of the most prominent collections of the 20th century. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket and body, decorated with blunt projections, likely stylised ears of corn. Running in between the projections are a series of snakes writhing up towards the top of the weapon. The function of this rare weapon is something of an enigma. It dates to a period when iron blades had begun to replace bronze weapons, at least functionally in battle. In all likelihood this fascinating artefact was intended to be carried as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for enacting ... moreceremonial sacrifice. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" A powerful piece of ancient near eastern weaponry. Expertl
