Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. It appears to be made of some type of slate.It is 9.5cms wide and 15.5cms long.Weight 231 grams. The tablet has a number of small chips down one side and a chip to a corner. Babylonian Incantation of a Sick Mouth - cuneiform tablet, hand written copy
A hand-written copy of a Neo-Babylonian/Late Babylonian(origin not certain) incantation against the cause of a gum and toothache(a worm) with a recipe and a medical procedure. The original clay tablet(which is also a copy of an older tablet) dates back to the 1st millenium BC and is deposited in the British Museum. The incantation is hand-written in Neo-Babylonian and Sumerian. In a Neo-Babylonian cuneiform script. It is not a cast, it is copied the way tablets were copied in ancient Mesopotamia- by hand. In the colophon at the end of the text. There is an information written in Sumerian, that it is a copy written by me(i. e. the scribe's name) as was the custom in Mesopotamia and as is written on the original tablet- there is a name of the scribe who copied some older tablet with this text, stating that the original tablet was a very ... moreold one(thus worth respecting in the eyes of Babylonians) I state the names of both of the scribes of the original tablets in the colophon. The layout of the text is kept as on the original. The tablet was fired in a kiln with wood. The fragment contains five lines of cuneiform script, no translation is available, but it is likely part of a business document.
