Ancient Persian Luristan Bronze Age Horse Bit - 1000 BC
A genuine ancient Persian Bronze Age horse bit. Dating to approximately 1000- 800 B.C. Luristan bronze working is renowned as being amongst the highest quality of all metalwork from the ancient world, this remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well preserved example. The bronze horse-bit comprising a square-section bar with loop terminals. The cheek pieces cast in the form of abstracted horses. With long tails and reins depicted and having two loops at the top. A variety of cheek-pieces decorated Luristan horse-bits, and the composite creatures decorating this example are very characteristic of the region. This striking piece was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as ... moremercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The bronze workers of Luristan excelled in producing horse decoration, perhaps not surprisingly in view of the fact that, as Assyrian reliefs make clear, cavalry was rapidly replacing chariotry as the main mobile force in most Near Eastern armies. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" For a similar Luristan horse bit currently on display at the Bri

Ancient Near Eastern Persian Luristan Bronze Age Ceremonial Axe - 900 BC
An elegant. Rare and well preserved ancient Luristan late Bronze Age pick axe, dating to approximately 900 BC. The axe is of classic Luristan form; with straight robust shaft and blunt edge. Cylindrical socket and rounded projection at the back. Indentations and remnants of the original wraps can be seen on the shaft, an extremely rare occurrence. Blunt ended axes such as this weapon were designed to cause depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head. Though this piece adheres to that design, it was probably originally for ceremonial use. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The ... moreancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire. A powerful piece of ancient near eastern weaponry. Expertly produced by an adaptable and fierce society. Length: 7 ½ inches. Condition: Excellent condition. Lovely green patina and encrustation. Provenance: Ex. Collection of C. F. Funes. NYC, acquired 1960's-1980's. Frank Funes served in the US army special forces in his early life, subsequently developing a passion for wea
