Time Life Great Ages of Man Cradle Civilization Babylon Mesopotamia Assria Iran
Time-Life Great Ages of Man Series– Cradle of Civilization. CONDITION: Excellent. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 183 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1969) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and ... moreUr, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative

GUMP’S 4TH-6TH CENTURY TERRA COTTA PARROT BIRD TAXILA INDIA w/ DOCUMENTATION
The documentation with this lovely and ancient creation from GUMP’S in San Francisco reads: PARROT INDIA TERRA COTTA. TAXILA(PUNJAB) 4th-6th Century A.D. 62-1141 LENGTH 5-3/4” Wood Stand” The City of Taxila(Takshashila) was one of the great centers of the Asiatic world in the early centuries of this era. It was the seat of a great university and scholars from all over India came to Taxila to study everything from medicine to theology. There were numerous monasteries and thousands of monks. From the ruins many delightful terracottas have been recovered. Some animals, some human figures– all things that delighted the secular population until the city was destroyed by the invasions of the 7th-8th centuries. We agree with the description from Gump’s. This is delightfully exquisite with delicate form and classical appearance. It was very modern ... moreeven by today’s designer standards. This terra cotta has been kiln fired possessing few blemishes; it is in excellent condition for it’s ancient provenance. Base measures approx. 6” x 2-1/2” x 1” the parrot approx. 5-3/4” x 2” x 3” high. A perfect museum piece mounted by GUMP’S or their conservator on what appears to be 2 copper posts. The wood base has“Japan” stamped on the bottom. These wood bases from Japan were traditionally used by Gump's in the 1960's and before f or disp laying antiq uities. Ancient Roman Coin And Money Ring Circa AD 268-284. Ring Is Older
Ancient relics are fascinating to almost everyone. These are examples of"money" in the form of a coin and what is called a"money ring" I didn't remove the coin from the folder. But you can make out some of the design-probably more so if taken out. I read that the ring was used for trade purposes, but I can't expound on the subject due to my lack of knowledge. If you have a question, I'll be happy to attempt an answer. Thanks for looking.

Ancient Luristan Bronze Finial, Sword-Knife Pommel/ Animal Form/ Persian 1000 BC
Ancient Luristan Bronze Animal Staff Finial- Pommel Circa 1500 BC- 500 BC Western Persia ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Length- 3.75" 9.5 cm) Height- 2.5" 6.35 cm) Width- 1.25" 3.2 cm) Weight- DESCRIPTION: Fine and rare bronze figural antiquity from the Luristan culture of Western Persia. Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. This piece was sculpted in the form of an animal. Possibly a bull, and was probably made as a staff finial or pommel for a knife, sword, or other weapon- tool. The form is quite abstracted and stylized with four feet and a tail integrated into the body and an elongated neck with a small head and ears on either side of a pair of very lengthy horns. There is a thick cylindrical, hollow tube-like form rising from the back which has a thick lip. Cemented into this hollow tube by encrustation, are the remains ... moreof what looks to be an iron attachment rod, possibly part of the tool or knife that this piece was originally part of. The animal form is classic and very modernistic looking. Although it was made over 2,500 years ago. AGE: Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. CONDITION: Good archeologically found condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Thick green encrusted encrustation overall. No apparent losses to this finial or handle, although it was part of a tool or knife that is no longer present. This piece does not presently have a display stand but it would be worth having one made. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States in the early 20th century. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. With no reserve, is not meant to reflect upon the actual monetary value of the piece. Ancient Hellenistic terracotta Aphrodite Anadyomene or Astarte figure
Ancient Hellenistic terracotta Aphrodite Anadyomene or Astarte figure You are bidding on a magnificent Hellenistic terracotta figurine that may be Aphrodite Anadyomene or perhaps an Astarte figure from the near East. It is 6.5 inches high and 3 inches wide. It is in good condition- please look at photos to see an old crack that goes from the base up around the legs of the figure. Also two closed cracks on the back. No visible glue or signs or repair. It came with a black base and internal support. Judging from the deterioration of the internal support. I estimate that the object was put on display no later than the 1950s. gsrx_vers_450(GS 6.3b1(450)

Persian Sassanian seal of ellipsoidal shape carved in reddish carnelian stone intaglio depicting a running animal and pierced through for suspension. In central and southern Mesopotamia. Both stamp and cylinder seals appeared together near the end of the third millennium B.C. Many stamp seals were carved in the form of an animal or an animal head, and the sealing surface was decorated with simple designs and often representing animals. It is possible that many of the stamps were not actually used as seals but were worn primarily as amulets. Sassanian stamp seals are mostly ellipsoidal in shape. And some have carved decoration to enhance the rich-looking translucent stones they favored, large holes in the center of the ellipsoids enabled ... morethem to be strung on chains or thongs and worn around their owners' necks. ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN BRONZE BATTLE AXE HEAD 4500 years old
This bronze axe head is not from Luristan but was made hundreds of miles to the west of Persia. It predates Luristani weaponry by 2000 years. This is also not a tribal weapon. This is an excellent example of one of the world's first manufactured Military weapons.By that statement I mean to say that these were made in large quantities to equip particular ranks of a country's army.Per Ebay policy I cannot mention this axehead's country of origin but if you know archaeologica you already have that answer. There is an old excavation inventory number painted on the back of the shaft hilt(195)I believe this was excavated probably in the 1930's when there was huge effort by the British to unearth the tombs and mudbrick temples of that area.I did purchase this item from Great Britain.313 grams. The shaft is 3 5/8" from the back, the ... moreblade is 3 5/8" from the forward edge of the shaft hole, one chip on the upper shaft edge, nice original patina. This item was made to exacting standards and it has"perfect" symmetry. If you are an ancient history buff you understand one of the reasons Phillip of Macedon conquered all of Greece was because of the standard of his weapons production. They maintained weapons factories and were able to standardize production and quality. This country's army also had standardized weapon production. Many bronze axeheads from other parts of the Near East are readily available on Ebay. This type is much harder to find.

The piece is a fine; early example of Chinese export ware with a facinating history. The Tek Sing"True Star" was one of the last of the great Chinese ocean-going junks. She was an unusually large three-masted Chinese ocean-going junk laden with a large cargo of porcelain goods; which sank on February 6th 1822 in an area of the South China Sea known as the Belvidere Shoals. This Chinese ocean-going junk was part of ... morea tradition leading back to the days of the legendary Treasure Ships. Approximately 2000 people were on board when she sank with a loss of life greater than that of the Titanic. The Tek Sing sank in about 100 feet of water. The Tek Sing wreck was discovered by marine salvor Michael Hatcher on May 12th 1999; in an area of the South China Sea north of Java; east of Sumatra and south of Singapore. A rare Ancient Near Eastern bronze and Iron sword. Dating to approximately 900 B.C. A very rare example. Notable for the almost complete preservation of its iron blade, which is often missing or so badly corroded that it has been removed and replaced with a bronze blade. The blade itself is of triangular form and of thick section. Decorated with three converging ridges on both sides, which accentuate the length and robust feel of the weapon. The hilt is of typical form, made of bronze with discoid pommel and ridge decoration on the handle. The tang insertion of the blade is visible from the back of the hilt, entering the pommel. Perhaps in antiquity the pommel may have been capped with a limestone or lapis-lazuli ornament. Length of sword: 17 3/4 inches. Condition. Exceptional. Unrestored. Blades such as this are seldom encountered on the ... moreart market. It was common in the early-middle part of the last century, when these blades were found, for the often very badly corroded iron blades to be snapped off by unscrupulous dealers. Thus one commonly finds on the market today that these original iron blades have been swapped with"more pleasing" bronze examples from another weapon. What is most unusual about this piece is that not only has the original blade been kept, but it is in an extraordinary state of preservation. Provenance: Ex. Fench private collection.
