Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1975) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books)

One end broken off. Heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A nearly intact. Heavy Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century A.D. from the Province of Judaea. As you can see(with some difficulty, but look particularly at the middle of the bracelet and one end) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series chevrons(V” engraved into the top surface of the bracelet, done in such a manner that the point of the inverted“V” is at the very apex of the slightly crowned band, so one arm of the“V” drops to either side of the band. It was when created a fairly sophisticated and surely costly bracelet. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been of a reasonable good size considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have come close to meeting one another. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile, and susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion. The tip of one of the two ends was broken off and lost in antiquity, or simple corroded away. The other side the end was fractured and then

Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted Siberian Unakite semi-precious gemstone using jeweler’s epoxy. The gemstone is quite secure, but if you at time in the future wished to remove it, this could

Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign ... morein Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless.
