The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Houghton) is thought to have been commissioned about 1522 by Shah Isma'il, the founder of the Safavid Dynasty, as a present for his son, Prince Tahmasp. A robust ancient dagger blade. Dating to the Late Near Eastern Bronze Age, approximately 1200- 800 BC. The long elliptical blade is of slender form with subtle refined symmetry. Thick rectangular handle designed for insertion into a wooden sleeve or handle in antiquity, now long since perished. This piece was produced by the expert bronze working society of the Near East and Persia. The Luristans. It would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. An ancient Persian bronze mount in the form of dual ibex/ wild goats. Dating to 1000 BC. Cast in a single piece. The depiction is a mirror image, two ibex facing outwards, their long curling horns meeting in the centre, their legs folded beneath as if kneeling. The back bears four pins which would have been used to attach the piece perhaps to a vessel or casket. This is an extremely well preserved piece from an old collection. A common sight in the mountain passes and foothills. The wild goat was a particularly favoured depiction in the Near East during the later Bronze Age, where metalworkers clearly found that its graceful form and curling horns could be used to create elegant pieces of art like this.
