Ancient Rare Luristan Decorative Bronze Ibex 900-800 BC
The Ancient Luristan Community- Bronze Artwork The term'Luristan' references artifacts made by a society of semi-nomadic people that once lived in the mountainous region of Northwest Iran. The Luristan bronzes were crafted by the earliest existence of the Median empire. The Medes were Indo-Iranian people originally from central Asia who settled in Northwest Iran in the 9th century BC and later defeated the Assyrian empire in 614 BC. Their success is short-lived and their empire which once stretched from central Iran to the Persian Gulf and Anatolia was overrun in 550 BC by the Persians. The people living in the mountains of Luristan seemed to have been fascinated by the animal kingdom. Since the bronzes depict animals, birds, fish, and insects both cast in bronze and incised on bowls and plaques. Wild life that was local to the region ... moreincludes the mountain goat(ibex) Mountain sheep, deer, bear, fox, and boar. Lions, leopards, panthers, and antelopes are also illustrated; they may all have been native to the region in early times. The monkey, shown infrequently, was a curiosity that may have been shown by traveling entertainers. The domestic animals and fowl include the horse, sheep, goat, pig, bull, cow, camel, dog, rooster, duck, goose, and dove. Not domesticated were the bee, eagle, snake, fish, crane, and frog. Many fantastic animals are found among the bronzes. Some have been provided with wings. A mark of association with divinities. Some are composite animals, some have human faces and some animals have plant forms growing out of their backs. Their bronze work is characterized by ornamentation that includes the free use of animal and demonic human forms applied to such products as weapons, horse fittings, and jewelry. About this Bronze Pendant One of our favourite and most precious items. This gorgeous and extremely rare Luristan bronze pendant depicts an ibex, bearing crisp and def

Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. This piece was sculpted in the form of an animal. Possibly a bull, and was probably made as a staff finial or pommel for a knife, sword, or other weapon- tool. The form is quite abstracted and stylized with four feet and a tail integrated into the body and an elongated neck with a small head and ears on either side of a pair of very lengthy horns. There is a thick cylindrical, hollow tube-like form rising from the back which has a thick lip. Cemented into this hollow tube by encrustation, are the remains ... moreof what looks to be an iron attachment rod, possibly part of the tool or knife that this piece was originally part of. The animal form is classic and very modernistic looking. Although it was made over 2,500 years ago. AGE: Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. CONDITION: Good archeologically found condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Thick green encrusted encrustation overall. No apparent losses to this finial or handle, although it was part of a tool or knife that is no longer present. This piece does not presently have a display stand but it would be worth having one made. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States in the early 20th century. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. Ancient VERY LARGE Copper Alloy Luristan Arrowhead 900-500 BC
About The Assyrians The term LURISTAN references artifacts made by a society of semi-nomadic people that once lived in the mountainous region of Northwest Iran. Little is known of this ancient culture but the most impressive traces are that of the bronze artifacts they left behind that can be found in parts of present-day Turkey. Iran and Afghanistan. These include highly decorative equipment for their horses, ceremonial containers and numerous weapons ranging from simple utilitarian pieces on up to elaborate masterpieces of warfare. It is theorized that the Luristan bronzes were crafted by the earliest existence of the Median empire but this has never been proven as written records of the Medes have not survived. The Medes were Indo-Iranian people originally from central Asia who settled in Northwest Iran in the 9th century BC and later ... moredefeated the Assyrian empire in 614 BC. Their success is short-lived and their empire which once stretched from central Iran to the Persian Gulf and Anatolia was overrun in 550 BC by the Persians. Ancient Luristan Fertility Goddess Pendant Figure - 1000 BC
A beautifully modeled and well preserved ancient Luristan bronze fertility pendant. Possibly depicting the goddess Ishtar, dating to between 1000- 650 B.C. This highly stylized human figure is depicted standing upright. Arms folded inwards and clutching a ritual macehead to her breast. The piece is a curious mix of abstract and realism. Her clothing accurately reflects Luristan dress customs from the period, with the long tunic(favoured by both men and women) and traditional bronze jewelry of anklets, bracelets and neck rings. A headdress of ripe pomegranates is worn along with a similar garland above the shoulders and waist, a symbol of fertility and a plentiful harvest. Though very little of is known of anicent Luristan society. It has been suggested that pendants such as these were depictions of Ishtar(or Anahita as she may have been known ... moreto the Luristans) the Mesopotamian goddess of water. Fertility and abundance. The loop for attachment on the rear of the piece shows it was intended to be worn, and so its dual role as both provider and protector seems plausible. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" An enigmatic piece of ancient middle eastern metalwork. Produced by an adaptable and unique society. P.R.S. Moorey(ed. Ancient Bronzes. Ceramics and Seals. Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Mus

Ancient Luristan Long Sword Prominent Grip Decoration VERY RARE 1200-900 BC
About The Luristan Culture Lorestān bronze is a set of Early Iron Age bronze artifacts of various individual forms which have been recovered from Lorestān and Kermanshah areas in west-central Iran. They include a great number of weapons. Ornaments, tools, and ceremonial objects. The artifacts were created by a major group of Persian aboriginals known as Lurs. Lorestani Bronze objects were taken illegally to Europe via Mesopotamia and to cover up most of the items taken they called them Mesopotamian while in fact there are no similarities what so ever between the Persian Bronze objects excavated in Lorestan 1943 to 1968. Which were dated to be from 5th to 4th millennium BC. The hair pins and four men holding a cup were typical of that period which once again separates Iranian development from whatever was going on in so called Sumerian areas. ... moreTypical Lorestāni-style objects belong to the(Iranian) Iron Age(c. 1250-650 BC) About This Artifact This very rare and solid ancient Luristan sword bears an incredibly long blade and features a very uniquely designed handle with two prominent mouldings made on its grip. Ending off with a rounded, funnel-shaped pommel. A dark, natural patina is retained with a rich layer of earthen encrustations that have settled all over this sword, testament to its age and authenticity. NEAR EAST BRONZE CUDGEL ENLARGE& ZOOM This cudgel. Or'macehead' as it is sometimes known, is a slender, hollow-cast tube with a slightly flanged base. There are two grooves encircling the head, at the centre, and above the base. At the upper end, three vertical bands of parallel lines divide the circumference into panels, each decorated with a herring-bone pattern in low relief. The lower end of the shaft is plain and smooth. Variegated green and amber patina all over with severe encrustation on the surface, particularly on the herring-bone relief on one side. The function of such objects is not immediately apparent but it is often believed that they were intended to be mounted on wooden shafts as cudgels. The addition of relief decoration though may perhaps indicate that they were designed primarily as votive or parade weapons. ... moreAn example very similar to this cudgel was excavated in Susa and may be dated to about 2600-2400 BC. Ancient Persian Luristan Bronze Age Horse Bit - 1000 BC
A genuine ancient Persian Bronze Age horse bit. Dating to approximately 1000- 800 B.C. Luristan bronze working is renowned as being amongst the highest quality of all metalwork from the ancient world, this remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well preserved example. The bronze horse-bit comprising a square-section bar with loop terminals. The cheek pieces cast in the form of abstracted horses. With long tails and reins depicted and having two loops at the top. A variety of cheek-pieces decorated Luristan horse-bits, and the composite creatures decorating this example are very characteristic of the region. This striking piece was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as ... moremercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The bronze workers of Luristan excelled in producing horse decoration, perhaps not surprisingly in view of the fact that, as Assyrian reliefs make clear, cavalry was rapidly replacing chariotry as the main mobile force in most Near Eastern armies. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" For a similar Luristan horse bit currently on display at the Bri
