Luristan Bronze barbed spear head 1000-1200 BC 6.5 inches in Display case
Bronze spear head Luristan 16.5 centimeter.Tapering with excellent crusty green patination 1000-1200 BC Barbed spear Mounted in black display case- 15" by 7" The term LURISTAN references artifacts made by a society of semi-nomadic people that once lived in the mountainous region of Northwest Iran. Little is known of this ancient culture but the most impressive traces are that of the bronze artifacts they left behind that can be found in parts of present-day Turkey. Iran and Afghanistan. These include highly decorative equipment for their horses, ceremonial containers and numerous weapons ranging from simple utilitarian pieces on up to elaborate masterpieces of warfare. It is theorized that the Luristan bronzes were crafted by the earliest existence of the Medean empire but this has never been proven as written records of the Medes ... morehave not survived. The Medes were Indo-Iranian people originally from central Asia who settled in Northwest Iran in the 9th century BC and later defeated the Assyrian empire in 614 BC. Their success is short-lived and their empire which once stretched from central Iran to the Persian Gulf and Anatolia was overrun in 550 BC by the Persians. Ancient Luristan Bronze Finial, Sword-Knife Pommel/ Animal Form/ Persian 1000 BC
Ancient Luristan Bronze Animal Staff Finial- Pommel Circa 1500 BC- 500 BC Western Persia ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Length- 3.75" 9.5 cm) Height- 2.5" 6.35 cm) Width- 1.25" 3.2 cm) Weight- DESCRIPTION: Fine and rare bronze figural antiquity from the Luristan culture of Western Persia. Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. This piece was sculpted in the form of an animal. Possibly a bull, and was probably made as a staff finial or pommel for a knife, sword, or other weapon- tool. The form is quite abstracted and stylized with four feet and a tail integrated into the body and an elongated neck with a small head and ears on either side of a pair of very lengthy horns. There is a thick cylindrical, hollow tube-like form rising from the back which has a thick lip. Cemented into this hollow tube by encrustation, are the remains ... moreof what looks to be an iron attachment rod, possibly part of the tool or knife that this piece was originally part of. The animal form is classic and very modernistic looking. Although it was made over 2,500 years ago. AGE: Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. CONDITION: Good archeologically found condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Thick green encrusted encrustation overall. No apparent losses to this finial or handle, although it was part of a tool or knife that is no longer present. This piece does not presently have a display stand but it would be worth having one made. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States in the early 20th century. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. With no reserve, is not meant to reflect upon the actual monetary value of the piece. My auctions are structured this way to encourage bidding and to allow the final auction price to be determined by the bidders. ~ please click on image for high definition photos ~ This item will be a museum qu

Ancient Luristan Fertility Goddess Pendant Figure - 1000 BC
A beautifully modeled and well preserved ancient Luristan bronze fertility pendant. Possibly depicting the goddess Ishtar, dating to between 1000- 650 B.C. This highly stylized human figure is depicted standing upright. Arms folded inwards and clutching a ritual macehead to her breast. The piece is a curious mix of abstract and realism. Her clothing accurately reflects Luristan dress customs from the period, with the long tunic(favoured by both men and women) and traditional bronze jewelry of anklets, bracelets and neck rings. A headdress of ripe pomegranates is worn along with a similar garland above the shoulders and waist, a symbol of fertility and a plentiful harvest. Though very little of is known of anicent Luristan society. It has been suggested that pendants such as these were depictions of Ishtar(or Anahita as she may have been known ... moreto the Luristans) the Mesopotamian goddess of water. Fertility and abundance. The loop for attachment on the rear of the piece shows it was intended to be worn, and so its dual role as both provider and protector seems plausible. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" An enigmatic piece of ancient middle eastern metalwork. Produced by an adaptable and unique society. P.R.S. Moorey(ed. Ancient Bronzes. Ceramics and Seals. Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Mus

Ancient Persian Luristan Bronze Age Horse Bit - 1000 BC
A genuine ancient Persian Bronze Age horse bit. Dating to approximately 1000- 800 B.C. Luristan bronze working is renowned as being amongst the highest quality of all metalwork from the ancient world, this remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well preserved example. The bronze horse-bit comprising a square-section bar with loop terminals. The cheek pieces cast in the form of abstracted horses. With long tails and reins depicted and having two loops at the top. A variety of cheek-pieces decorated Luristan horse-bits, and the composite creatures decorating this example are very characteristic of the region. This striking piece was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as ... moremercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The bronze workers of Luristan excelled in producing horse decoration, perhaps not surprisingly in view of the fact that, as Assyrian reliefs make clear, cavalry was rapidly replacing chariotry as the main mobile force in most Near Eastern armies. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" For a similar Luristan horse bit currently on display at the Bri

Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Figure Of An Embracing Couple On Horseback - 1000 BC
An ancient Near Eastern bronze figure of an embracing couple seated on horseback. Produced around 1000 BC, possibly in Luristan. A rare, tender and beautifully abstract scene. The figures reduced to the essence of form. Their features anonymous, but with their hands looped round to meet at the centre. Both seated on a horse, the animals legs and tail have been shorted though the head is large and stylised, with lightly incised eyes and reins running from the mouth. This wonderful piece has a touching humanity that transcends age or culture. The artist has intentionally disregarded the need for figural accuracy. Using this absence to emphasise the emotive nature of the scene. In a sense the detail is unimportant, rather the love and affection takes precedence. The effect is tangible, allowing us to feel the connection with its creator. A beautifully ... moretouching piece. Reflecting a powerful human sentiment rarely displayed in Near Eastern art from this period. Height: 1 7/8 inches. Height mounted: 2 3/8 inches. Length: 2 1/4 inches. Condition: Good. With wear and encrustation synonymous with an ancient artefact. Mounted on a bespoke bronze stand and unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired 1990's, London. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animals neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheeps neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. This artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. Whetstones are some of the most characteristic of all Luristan bronzes. And are composed of a bronze handle, with stone grinder. They were used for sharpening

Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Stag Attachment With Lapis Lazuli - 1000 BC
A rare ancient Near Eastern Luristan bronze attachment of a stag. Dating to around 1000 BC. A piece of delicate beauty, the ancient artist has skilfully captured the elegant majesty of the animal. The creature is shown resting. Its legs tucked beneath the body, indicated by light incisions to the surface of the bronze. The neck is straight, whilst the head is turned quizzically towards the viewer, the eyes and forehead inlaid with beautiful lapis lazuli. The ears are attentively pricked up as if the animal has been alerted to a sudden noise, the horns are naturalistically modelled, shown curving subtly behind the animal's head. This wonderful piece was produced by the expert metalworking society of the ancient Near East. The Lurs. The region of Luristan was home to a rich tradition of bronze-working in the early part of the first millennium ... moreBC. These ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which this society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months, when the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Lurs delighted in portraying the myriad of creatures that inhabited their mountainous world, none more so than the stag, which appears to have been a revered and respected creature. A striking piece of ancient near eastern bronze working. This artefact is a fantastic example of its type and was produced by one of the pre-eminent artisan societies of the ancient world. Please note that this piece comes with a bespoke bronze stand(as shown) Height mounted: 3 ½ inches. Length: 2 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored and exhibiting a beautiful patina. It is unusual for decorative inlays such as the lapis lazuli on this piece to survive intact. Provenance: Ex. collection of Arthur M. Sackler. 1913- 1987. Sackler was one of the pre-eminent col

Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Mace Head With Snake Decoration - 1000 BC.
A beautiful ancient Luristan Persian bronze mace-head. Dating to around 1350-1000 BC. Luristan weapons are renowned as being both highly imaginative and advanced for their period. This remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well provenanced example, coming from one of the most prominent collections of the 20th century. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket and body, decorated with blunt projections, likely stylised ears of corn. Running in between the projections are a series of snakes writhing up towards the top of the weapon. The function of this rare weapon is something of an enigma. It dates to a period when iron blades had begun to replace bronze weapons, at least functionally in battle. In all likelihood this fascinating artefact was intended to be carried as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for enacting ... moreceremonial sacrifice. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" A powerful piece of ancient near eastern weaponry. Expertl

Elamite Terracotta & Faience Beads 1200-1000 BC Necklace Elam 40+ Inches
Elamite Terracotta Blue Faience Beads 1200-1000 BC Earth Tones Elam This is string of Elamite beads is approximately 42 inches in length and contains many of the small beads. According to the accompanying documentation from Sadigh Galleries of New York: Elamite Bead Necklace- The ancient kingdom of Elam lay in the southern provinces of present-day Iran. The Elamites. Like their great Mesopotamian neighbor to the south, were ruled by a sequence of dynasties and their culture flourished from 2,000 BC to about 650 BC when they were conquered by Assurbanipal. The people of Elam had a distinctive artistic tradition and their style can be recognized on artifacts that have been recovered. Elamite cylinder seals frequently depict daily life scenes: hunting. Weaving and playing musical instruments. Seals also serve as a source of information on personal ... moreadornment and show, for example, formal hairstyles combed forward and projecting above the brow, large turbans, bare chests and pleated long skirts worn by deities and men of distinction. Goddesses' statues were adorned with jewelry and votive statues often show a series of necklaces. Beads were a popular adornment for men and women alike and were made from a variety of materials including stone, clay, faience and bone. The terra cotta beads on this necklace are from the Elamite culture and are dated 1200-1000 BC. The earth-toned beads are made of fired clay and the blue beads are made of faience paste. These beads have been carefully restrung in a wearable necklace. The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity is included with this necklace. We are not experts in antiquities such as these and are selling for a gentleman who purchased this item a few years ago. The beads indeed look old. But beyond that, we cannot make guarantee on anything in the Certificate as issued by Sadigh.

Very nice surfaces and excellent sharp details. Cf. Sotheby’s, Antiquities, New York, December 17, 1998, lot 443. The terracotta figurines are considered to be among the most original of Susa’s artistic expressions. In successive phases over a period of about three millennia. The inhabitants of the Susiana plain fashioned the ... moreclay they found beneath their feet into animal and human forms, first by hand and later by using molds. By the latter means they bestowed upon their figurines, a great variety of ornaments, such as elaborate earrings, diadems, necklaces(some times bearing star pendants) and anklets, and ringbone shoulder-straps, as in the present examples. These were produced outside the realm of official commissions, although some of the cast examples were made by skilled craftsman and are of very high quality. These small figures were intended for private individuals and their inspiration. Objects of this type are chiefly of interest for what they reveal about Susians’ daily preoccupations and the evolution of their mode of thought. It should be noted that a great majority of Susian figurines demonstrate a complete independence from Mesopotamian production, except in times when Susa was under Akkadian or Babylonian rule. A few examples of Susian figurines. Such as these ones, were fashioned with a great variety of ornamentation. A few appear to have made their way into private or public collections. This includes the examples excavated by Roland de Mecquenem in Susa(1897-1946) and now con

Ancient Near Eastern Tablet with Cuneiform scripture (800-1000 BC)
A Near Eastern Tablet with Cuneiform Scriptures. Circa 800-1000 BC. Measuring 4 1/8“ x 2 3/8” x ¾” Approx. Historian and Egyptologist, who is the person responsible for the construction of the Neo-Mamluk Complex in Rio: Al-Sultaniyya Cultural Complex and the Archaeological Museum of Mankind. Per the Professor description. This piece is in good and stable condition, but partially eroded in some parts of its surface and borders with small chips, and very worn, certainly due to the age/atmospheric conditions. This piece belonged to a private collector in Rio de Janeiro. As part of a collection of items purchase in Damascus in 1923 and brought to Rome afterwards, and to RJ in the 1950’s. Cuneiform is known ... moreas one of the earliest system of writing. Is a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia circa 3500-3000 BCE. It is considered the most significant among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians. The name comes from the Latin word cuneus for'wedge' owing to the wedge-shaped style of writing. In cuneiform. A carefully cut writing implement known as a stylus is pressed into soft clay to produce wedge-like impressions that represent word-signs(pictographs) All of the great Mesopotamian civilizations used cuneiform(the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Elamites, Assyrians, Hurrians and others) until it was abandoned in favor of the alphabetic script in the course of the Roman era. I am a collector with over 20 years of experience in the hobby; I have acquired many interested pieces around the world. Anywhere from private collections to highly known auction houses. But now I have reached the time on my life on which I have to start setting up my retirement. This striking artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze ... moreartefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless.
