Genuine Phoenician carved marble sculpture of BA'AL HAMMON & TANIT: 800 BC
Genuine Phoenician carved marble sculpture of BA'AL HAMMON& TANIT: 800 BC Figure of Phoenician god Tanit and Ba'al Hammon. Chief god of Carthage. Measures: 7' h. x 2 1/2' x 1 3/8' Weight: lb. 3oz. = 1000g = 1 kg Age: 800 BC Provenance: bought on the auction in USA References: Baal-hamon Ba'al-Hamon(Ruler of a Crowd or Multitude" was the chief god of Carthage. He was a deity of sky and vegetation. Depicted as a bearded older man with curling ram's horns. Baʿal Hammon's female cult partner was Tanit. Cult and attributes The worship of Baʿal Hammon flourished in the Phoenician colony of Carthage. His supremacy among the Carthaginian gods is believed to date to the 5th century BC. After relations between Carthage and Tyre were broken off at the time of the Punic defeat in Himera. Modern scholars identify ... morehim variously with the Northwest Semitic god El or with Dagon. In Carthage and North Africa Baʿal Hammon was especially associated with the ram and was worshiped also as Baʿal Qarnaim(Lord of Two Horns" in an open-air sanctuary at Jebel Bu Kornein(the two-horned hill" across the bay from Carthage. He was probably never identified with Baʿal Melqart. Although one finds this equation in older scholarship. Ancient Greek writers identified him with the Titan Cronus. In ancient Rome. He was identified with Saturn. And the cultural exchange between Rome and Carthage as a result of the Second Punic War may have influenced the development of the Roman religious festival Saturnalia. Greco-Roman sources report that the Carthaginians burned their children as offerings to Baʿal Hammon. See Moloch for a discussion of these traditions and conflicting thoughts on the matter. Attributes of his Romanized form as an African Saturn indicate that Hammon was a fertility god. Name and functions The meaning of Hammon or Hamon is unclear. In the 19th century when Ernest Renan excavated the ruins of Hammon(Ḥammon) The modern Umm al-Awamid between Tyre and Acre. He found two Phoenician inscri

Ancient Bronze Age Phoenician / Canaanite Duck Bill Axe - 2100 BC
An ancient Canaanite bronze duck bill axe. Dating to 2100– 1800 BC. It is not hard to see why in modern times. These distinctive weapons are termed duck bill axes. Yet to the ancient Canaanite who wielded this weapon, it was an object of great power and significance. Given the scarcity of the metal in this area during the middle Bronze Age, these were clearly not utilitarian tools, but weapons and religious artefacts for dedication to the gods. As well as being pioneering traders and seafarers. The warriors of the Canaanites were rightly respected in the ancient Levant. Around the time this weapon was forged, the Canaanites had begun to infiltrate the Egyptian Delta, and by around 1700 BC they had conquered Lower Egypt itself, founding a dynasty known as the Hyksos. For a similar example currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of ... moreArt. Length: 4 ¼ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Phoenician Glass Bead - CK.0244
Origin: Lebanon Circa: 600 BC to 300 BC Dimensions: 1.25" 3.2cm) high Collection: Biblical Antiquities Medium: Glass The Phoenicians were one of the most important civilisations of the ancient world. And flourished from around 1500 to 300 BC. Their world was centred on Northern Israel, Lebanon and Syria, while their sphere of conquest and influence extended throughout the Mediterranean and even beyond the Pillars of Hercules(the Straits of Gibraltar) and into the Mediterranean-Atlantic. Their power was due primarily to their mastery of seamanship– which they developed to a whole new level during their pre-eminence– and extremely well-organised administration which was strengthened by extensive use of the alphabet. Indeed, it was the Phoenicians who introduced the alphabet to the Greeks, who in turn passed it onto the rest of the Western ... moreWorld. They were essentially Canaanites, to whom they were identical in sociocultural and material terms, the only difference being the massive range over which their cultural remains and heritage can be found. Phoenician society was comparatively stable when compared to the changeable fortunes of other Eastern Mediterranean cultures, primarily due to its broad royal, political and religious foundations. The town of Byblos became a major hub for trade all over the Fertile Crescent, followed by Tyre and Sidon; overseas territories notably included Carthage(founded 814 BC) but they either took over or culturally dominated trading ports from Cyprus to Malta, Spain, Portugal and Sardinia. They traded in purple dye(Tyrian Purple” textiles, luxury ceramics, silver, tin(with England) and glass, explored down the west coast of Africa as far as the Gulf of Guinea, and may even have circumnavigated Africa in around 600 BC.
