Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animals neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheeps neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. This artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. Whetstones are some of the most characteristic of all Luristan bronzes. And are composed of a bronze handle, with stone grinder. They were used for sharpening

Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Stag Attachment With Lapis Lazuli - 1000 BC
A rare ancient Near Eastern Luristan bronze attachment of a stag. Dating to around 1000 BC. A piece of delicate beauty, the ancient artist has skilfully captured the elegant majesty of the animal. The creature is shown resting. Its legs tucked beneath the body, indicated by light incisions to the surface of the bronze. The neck is straight, whilst the head is turned quizzically towards the viewer, the eyes and forehead inlaid with beautiful lapis lazuli. The ears are attentively pricked up as if the animal has been alerted to a sudden noise, the horns are naturalistically modelled, shown curving subtly behind the animal's head. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Mace Head With Snake Decoration - 1000 BC.
A beautiful ancient Luristan Persian bronze mace-head. Dating to around 1350-1000 BC. Luristan weapons are renowned as being both highly imaginative and advanced for their period. This remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well provenanced example, coming from one of the most prominent collections of the 20th century. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket and body, decorated with blunt projections, likely stylised ears of corn. Running in between the projections are a series of snakes writhing up towards the top of the weapon. The function of this rare weapon is something of an enigma. It dates to a period when iron blades had begun to replace bronze weapons, at least functionally in battle. In all likelihood this fascinating artefact was intended to be carried as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for enacting ... moreceremonial sacrifice. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" A powerful piece of ancient near eastern weaponry. Expertl

Near eastern or "Luristan" animal/deer, 500 - 100 BCE
Height ca. 4 cm. Width ca. 2,5 cm. Weight 15,2 g. Not having checked the use or origins properly. It's possible for example if left on site(iron age somewhere in Near East) at the burial or"sacred place" these bronze figurines were originally intended to be a type of messenger animal and"supernatural" sacred animals, votives, or decorations. I would believe figurine isn't exactly Luristan originated artifact or date might be closer to 100 BCE. Beautiful. Great, and unique ancient piece and full of particular ancient and"little known" near eastern culture. Probably previous century looting. Yet a more collectable antiquity.
