$11.63 Shipping Location: CHESSINGTON, United Kingdom A fascinating ancient Celtic bronze toggle. Dating to approximately 50 B.C. A most unusual toggle. With the top end fashioned into a bull's head with ... morecurled horns, the eyes and brow incised. FRAMED BRASS RUBBING, CELTIC SCROLL,historic design from Book of Durrow, 7thC
THIS IS NOT A PRINT. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS AND ART OF BRASS RUBBINGS THESE RUBBING'S REPRESENT ART HISTORY. DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD Monumental Brasses were crafted by silversmiths and stonemasons during the Middle Ages. And became the height of fashion in Europe between 1280-1650. They were'pictures' of actual people. And show the customs, etc.of the period. To make a rubbing we stretch rag paper over the engraved plate. use metallic wax compound's to rub the image. Each Rubbing is a Hand Made Original This is a hand made rubbing. Using gold, silver, red and blue wax crayons on special black rag paper. This beautifully decorated woodcut is based upon a design from the Book of Durrow, written in the late 7th century. The Book of Durrow was composed at the monastery of Durrow in Ireland, which was founded in the 6th ... morecentury by St. Columba. The decoration consists largely of pages of interlace patterns. Each of the four Gospels begins with a decorative initial, preceded by an illuminated'carpet' page, such as the one on which the design was based. I have framed it in a plain black frame with an outside measurement of 21"X 15" There is a Gold label on the back that reads"Hand Rubbed at The London Brass Rubbing Centre" The rubbing is from an exhibition featured at The Washington National Cathedral by The London Brass Rubbing Centre and more recently has been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop. Rubbings like this. Hand made by one of their craft instructors, make unusual and interesting gifts. I invite you to visit my eBay Store. The Wonders Of Britain" where I have other lovely things that I brought over from England together with many other Brass Rubbings. Each hand crafted by The London Brass Rubbing Centre.

Last Knight Medieval England Plantagenet John of Gaunt this Sceptred Isle Plague
The Last Knight: The Twilight of the Middle Ages and The Birth of the Modern Era by Norman F. Cantor. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 260 pages. Publisher: Free Press; 2004) ISBN: 0743226887. There may be no more fascinating historical period than the late fourteenth century in Europe. The Hundred Years' War ravaged the continent. Yet gallantry, chivalry, and literary brilliance flourished in the courts of England and elsewhere. Chaucer wrote brilliant satire, lords and ladies invented courtly rituals of love and romance, yet the vast bulk of Europe's population struggled with plague, economic uncertainty, and violence. It was a world in transition, soon to be replaced by the Renaissance and the Age of Exploration, and John of Gaunt was its central figure. Norman F. Cantor, the best known and most popular historian of the ... moreMiddle Ages, brings Gaunt to life brilliantly in his newest work, The Last Knight" John of Gaunt was the richest man in Europe. Apart from its monarchs, and he epitomized and surpassed the ideals of the late Middle Ages. From chivalry; he was taught at a young age to fight on horseback like the knights of old; to courtly love, his three marriages included two romantic love-matches; and he was an ideal leader. He created lavish courts, sponsoring Chaucer and proto-Protestant religious thinkers, and he survived the dramatic Peasants' Revolt, during which his sumptuous London residence was burned to the ground. As the head of the Lancastrian Branch of the Plantagenet family. He was the unknowing father of the War of the Roses, for his son Henry Bolingbroke(to become King Henry IV) usurped the crown from Gaunt's nephew, Richard II, after Gaunt had died. He passed away just as one great era gave way to the next: His grandson Henry the Navigator launched the Age of Exploration. Gaunt's adventures represent the culture and mores of the Middle Ages as few others' do, and his death is portrayed by Cantor as the end of that fascinating period. Shakespeare put into Gaun

The Ancient Celts by Barry Cunliffe. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 324 pages. Publisher: Oxford University Press; 1997) ISBN: 0198150105. Published at $55.00] For two and a half thousand years the Celts have continued to fascinate those who have come into contact with them. Yet their origins have remained a mystery and even today are the subject of heated debate among historians and archaeologists. In this erudite and engaging illustrated history, Professor Cunliffe explores the archaeological reality of these bold warriors and skilled craftsmen of barbarian Europe who inspired fear in the Greeks and Romans. He investigates the texts of the classical writers and contrasts their view of the Celts with current archaeological findings. Tracing the emergence of chiefdoms and the fifth-to third-century migrations as far as Bosnia and ... morethe Czech Republic and into Turkey. He assesses the disparity between the traditional and contemporary information on the Celts. Other aspects of Celtic identity, such as the cultural diversity of the tribes, their social and religious systems, their art, language and law, are also examined. From the picture that emerges, Professor Cunliffe is able to distinguish between the original Celts and tribes which were subjected to'Celtization' thus giving us a new insight into the true identity of this ancient people. King Arthur, Celtic Burial Cross, Very Detailed, Solid Metal, Very Cool Item
Powered by Frooition Pro Shop Search. Click to close full size. Item Description. This is a replica of the legendary King Arthur Burial Cross. This cross is based on a Lead Cross that was found in c.1191 at Glastonbury. England by Monks. They uncovered a hollowed out log containing two bodies, while digging between two stone Pyramids standing together in the Abbey Cemetary. The log coffin had been buried quite deep, at around 16 feet down. A stone slab cover had been found at the seven foot level and attached to its underneath was an oddly shaped Cross with a Latin inscription on it. This inscription named the ocupants of the coffin as the renowned King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere. The grave was moved at that time. A marker still stands in the Abbey that reads"Site of King Arthur's Tomb in the year 1191 the bodies of King Arthur ... moreand Queen were said to have been found on the south side of the Lady Chapel. On 19th of April 1278 their remains were removed in the presence of King Edward I and Queen Eleanor to a Black Marble tomb on this site. This tomb survived until the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539. Our Replica Arthur's Burial Cross is made out of solid metal and is in Antique Silver. It Weighs about 10oz. and measures 3 inches wide x 6.5 inches tall x 0.25 inches thick. It has a hanger on it so you can hang on wall. Cross looks just like the original cross. Of which, was pictured in William Camden's historical work"Britannia" which originally was published in 1607. Indented into the Cross is the Latin inscription; Hic jacet Sepultus inclytus Rex Arthurus in Insula Avalonia(Here lies buried in the isle of Avalon the renowned King Arthur, and Guenivere, his second wife) With the cross you will also get a certificate that tells the history of the cross. Exported to Russia for use in indigenous jewelry, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a Russian artisan, part of a centuries-long heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Ametrine is actually very rare in nature, having both the manganese traces which produce amethyst’s purple, as well as the iron traces which produce citrine’s yellow. The crystals must then be exposed to a variable source of heat, such as might be the case when a crystal partly encased in rock is exposed on one surface to sun shine. In the ancient world, silver was fairly rare, and oftentimes half the cost of gold(as opposed to the current ratio of gold being fifty times more expensive than silver) Nonetheless though executed in bronze, this particular ring was definitely well above the ordinary ring of the era. You might notice that besides the fact that it is heavy(and even bronze was costly in the Roman world) and the ring is thrice the weight of the ordinary ring of the era, there are a number of other“upgrade” embellishments. Intact. Moderately heavy wear, light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A handsome. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ... morering with understated but very elegant features. The ring sports a large bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted jade semi-precious gemstone. Jade was extremely valuable in ancient China, there are records of an entire city being traded for a carved ornamental jade piece. Jade jewelry can be found in the tombs of Ancient China's emperors dating back to the 4th millennium B.C. Many classical scholars believe that some jade

Time-Life TimeFrame 3000-1500 BC Ancient Egypt India Aegean Babylon Celts China
The Age Of God-Kings TimeFrame 3000-1500 BC. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 176 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) ISBN: 0809464004. The Time Frame series was released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series ... moreare simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 3000-1500 B.C. is sub-titled“The Age of the God Kings” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich

Antique 19thC Rose Sapphire Celtic Roman Greek Sorcery Gemstone
One Rare. Antique Genuine Natural Faceted One-Third Carat Round Pastel Rose Purple Sapphire Precious Gemstone. CLASSIFICATION: Faceted Pastel Rose-Purple Sapphire Round. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Diameter: 4mm. Depth(Thickness) 3 1/2mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: Approximately 0.39 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone ... moredate back to about 800 B.C. Here's a gorgeous, delicately colored natural bright pastel purple-rose tinted sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The color is absolutely incredible, a pastel purple rose color, a blend of purple with rosy undertones. In natural sunlight the gemstone seems to be transformed, colored an even paler shade of purple, with pink undertones. However in artificial light, the rose hue is enhanced, and the purple hue darkens as well. It is a bit reminiscent of a reddish-purple tinted ruby, except the color is much more delicate, or a pink-purple amethyst, except with far greater lustre and sparkle than any amethyst. This incredibly delicate hue imparts really rich character and great visual appeal. The gorgeous shade of rose highlighted purple could perhaps be best likened those occasional petunias and pansies which are a pale cross between purple and rose, or that occasional purple rose which somehow seems to capture the fairyland color which lies between a deep pink blush rose and purple. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a“brilliant cut” round, the contemporary fini

"Beyond Stonehenge" Ancient Astronomy Wisdom Science Nazca Machu Picchu Karnak
Beyond Stonehenge by Gerald S. Hawkins. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 319 pages. Publisher: Harper& Row. Publishers; 1973) Gerald Hawkins. Author of“Stonehenge Decoded” and“Splendor in the Sky” here explores many intriguing facets of the wisdom of ancient man. First he tells about the astro-archaeological work done at Stonehenge itself, that eighth wonder of the ancient world. Stonehenge is an architectural gem, awesome, haunting, strangely beautiful. On the day of a summer solstice, his group took pictures of the rising sun over the heel stone. Hawkins considers just what it is that makes a civilization. Again he goes to make a study of enormous ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert, those vast linear Nazca lines which can be appreciated only from the air. Yet their makers could not have seen them from the air. How and why ... morewere they made? Hawkins and his associates made measurements and calculations. But came to the conclusion that they are not oriented toward sun, moon, or stars. Their mystery remains unsolved; gigantic lizard, spider, flower, monkey. The author explores Machu Picchu and its temple. He reviews Heyerdahl’s theory of Kon-Tiki and the passage to the Pacific islands from the west coast of South America. Hawkins then explores the activities of the American Indian mound builders. Some of those works are oriented toward the sun. He looks at Mayan ruins in Central America. Hawkins makes astro-surveys of the temples of the Nile. The Great Temple of Karnak, the Temple of Amon-Ra, where the pharaoh made his sun observations, and other temples. Hawkins’ assumption is that anything which shows today as clearly astronomical was known in antiquity to the builders. He offers perceptive speculations on how much longer our civilization will continue, and digs into many legends and myths concerned with the ancient civilizations which still have reference in the modern world. Illustrated with 60 photographs and 49 line drawings. CONDITION: Pages are clean. Crisp, unmarked(except for owner's nam

Ancient Celtic lucky Charm C.620-480 B.C.
he lands occupied by Celtic peoples. Whose existence can be traced over more than 25 centuries, were vast. Celts occupied land in modern day Eastern Europe, Greece, Spain, Northern Italy, Western Europe, England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Celtic people have mystified anthropologists and historians for generations. They were a non literate culture whose history and literature was preserved through oral tradition. The only written records of their civilization are the texts left by classical authors, the first of which appear circa 500 BCE. These accounts, inaccurate as they may be, are important in that they demonstrate that the Celts came into cultural contact, and sometimes competition, with the Greeks as well as the Romans. 18thC Antique 1¼ct Scotland Amethyst Ancient Medieval Shaman Prophecy Visions
Large One and One-Quarter Carat 18th Century Handcrafted Antique Genuine Natural Amethyst Oval. Handcrafted oval cut cabochon is of 18th century origin sourced from the Devonian lava beds on the coast of Scotland near Angus. Handcrafted by a Russian artisan for domestic jewelry. Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Thickness: 3mm. Weight: 1.28 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) Shamans of the ancient and medieval world used amethyst to assist prophecy and visions. Amethyst was also used in spells designed to magnify beauty. In Renaissance magic. An amethyst engraved with the image of a bear was worn as a protective amulet, and had the power to put demons to flight. Most ancient Mediterranean cultures, including the ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians and Celts believed that ... moreamethyst protect soldiers from harm in battle. Extremely popular in 18th and 19th century Scotland, amethyst retained its popularity through the 20th century. Handcrafted and shaped in the 18th century, this large and colorful amethyst comes from the Devonian lava beds near the coast of Angus County, Scotland. Much finer than the images here suggest, it is a lovely cabochon oval cut, gorgeous, vibrant and richly hued, the pride of a 18th century Russian artisan. A nice quality gemstone in its times, it is more or less transparent but by no means flawless. Though generous in size, it is not a high quality amethyst by today's standards, though it is historically significant. Purple has always been associated with royalty and amethyst is no exception. It was popular with all of Europe's royalty during Renaissance and Victorian times. When seen under magnification. The coarseness of the finish of this 18th century amethyst tells us that it is obviously hand crafted. Rather than detracting from its value or allure, this is considered appealing to most collectors, who consider examples like this to be more desirable than today’s computer-controlled machine-produced gemstones.

A Royal History of England: The House of Windsor by Andrew Roberts. Edited by Antonia Fraser. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 104 pages. Publisher: Cassell& Co; 2000) Since the inception of the“House of Windsor” in 1917. The nature of the English monarchy has undergone a profound change. The House of Windsor” has at its centre fascinating insights into and vivid biographies of the kings and queens of England during a tumultuous century- a period that has seen two world wars, an abdication and undreamt-of social change. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, the book traces the lives of the monarchs of living memory and the near past: from'Sailor' George V to the eleven days of Edward VIII's reign: from the rebuilding of the crown's authority under George VI and Queen Elizabeth to the accession of the present ... morequeen, the turmoil of her children's marriages and the death of the Princess of Wales. The House of Windsor” is the last of six books in the“A Royal History of England” series, which illuminates the lives of the monarchs of England from 1066 A.D. to the present day. CONDITION: New but shows a bit of"shop wear" Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unread, though based on appearances, it seems relatively certain that the book was flipped through a few times by"lookie-loo" bookstore browsers while on the book store shelf. Dustjacket evidences VERY mild edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket and mild rubbing(dustjacket is photo-finish, high-gloss black and so shows rub marks very easily, even merely from being shelved between other books) Covers also evidence modest edge and corner shelfwear, principally in the form of a small bump to the lower corner of both the front and back cover, likely the consequence of being clumsily shelved and bumped against bookshelf edges. However the bumping is so light that the pages beneath the covers are entirely unaffected. The bumps are in the nature of merely superficial cosmetic blemish

“Norman Achievement” Europe England France Italy Sicily Syria Medieval Empire
The Norman Achievement 1050-1100 by David C. Douglas. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 271 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1969) In the whole course of European history” Professor Douglas writes, there have been few movements more remarkable than the sudden explosion of Norman power between 1050 and 1100. For during this period, the Norman spread out from their adopted homeland in the north-west of France, and took their power and influence to places as far apart as England, Italy, Sicily, and Syria. At the same time William the Conqueror was taking possession of England, Robert Guiscard was strengthening his rule over Italy; Roger, the Great Count was establishing his power in Muslim Sicily; and Bohemund I was securing a Norman foothold within the Byzantine Empire. But as impressive as this was, it was more than ... morea military conquest, and its effects were to play an important part in changing the direction of European history. In the north-west of Europe a new power was created. The Norman-Anglo state. In the south the many rulers whose carrying powers and traditions embraced two regions, two systems of ecclesiastical government, three languages(Greek, Latin and Arabic) and three systems of law were replaced by a unified kingdom. Moreover by their alliance with the reforming Papacy the Normans fostered a revival in the Western Church, and made their own contribution to the Crusades. Professor Douglas shows the remarkable similarity between the Norman enterprises. He compares their attitudes to the Church, to the cultures they found and their influence in molding a composite Norman civilization. He also illustrates the extraordinary connections between the men who took part. Not only in leaders such as William and Robert Guiscard, but equally in the lesser figures as the Grandmensils and Crispins, whose families straddled the horizon of Norman power, and who might at any time be at work in Normandy or England or Antioch. Professor Douglas’s book thus reveals the totality of the Norm
