$15.94 Shipping Location: CLEETHORPES, United Kingdom Ancient Byzantine Christian Bronze Ring with Carved Cross Motif 500-700 AD Byzantine jewelry was a full continuation of the Roman traditions which were ... morekept alive behind the high walls of the new capital. Constantinople. The Roman techniques and styles continued to form the foundation of Byzantine goldsmith's skills who weren't complete copycats; some innovations such as the use of Christian iconography and further specialization of new and old techniques occurred. Production in the old jewelry centers of Alexandria and Antioch gave way to an increased production in Constantinople. Byzantine jewelry had a huge influence on the manufacturing of personal decoration in the rest of the medieval world. The Carolingian(early 742 AD) and the later Ottonian courts(start 962 AD) were linked to the Byzantine Empire and adopted their fashion resulting in the northern European Romanesque jewelry style. In the Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role. It acted as a way to express ones status and as a diplomatic tool. In 529 AD. Emperor Justinian took up laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry in a new set of laws, later to be called the Justinian Code. He explicitly writes that sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the emperor's use but every free man is entitled to wear a gold ring. This may tell us something about the widespread use and great popularity of jewelry. One could easily argue that there hadn't been a need for such a law if jewelry had been a purely aristocratic phenomenon. The Byzantine Empire was wealthy. It had gold mines within its borders and its geographical position was perfect for trade between the East and West. Successful traders. Military officers and high officials in the empire's administration would all have been in the position to afford luxurious jewelry. In an attempt to keep jewelry exclusive Justinian ruled that only he got to decide who wore the finest jewels by presenting his favorite'servants' with presents from the imperial workshops.

Bronze Icon Probably Byzantine Medieval Christian 14-18 AD
Bronze Icon Probably Byzantine Medieval Christian 14-18 AD Depict Virgin Mary(Mother of Jesus) Dimention 37x47 mm Wonderful bronze Icon from the majestic Byzantine Empire with a rich history and great quality Mary(mother of Jesus) Mary was an Israelite Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee who lived in the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD. And was the mother of Jesus. Among her many other names and titles are the Virgin Mary or Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary, Mother of God, and Saint Mary in Western churches, and the Theotokos in Orthodox Christianity, and Maryam, mother of Isa in Islam. She is identified in the New Testament[Mt 1:16,18-25]Lk 1:26-56]2:1-7]2] and in the Qur'an as the mother of Jesus through divine intervention. Christians hold her son Jesus to be Christ(i.e. the messiah) and God the Son Incarnate(see Trinitarian ... moremonotheism) whereas Muslims regard Jesus as the messiah and one of the most important prophets of God sent to mankind. The canonical gospels of Matthew and Luke describe Mary as a virgin(Greek παρθένος. Parthénos) Traditionally, Christians believe that she conceived her son miraculously by the agency of the Holy Spirit. Muslims believe that she conceived by the command of God. This took place when she was already betrothed to Saint Joseph and was awaiting the concluding rite of marriage, the formal home-taking ceremony.4] She married Joseph and accompanied him to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. In keeping with Jewish custom, the betrothal would have taken place when she was around 12, and the birth of Jesus about a year later. The New Testament begins its account of Mary's life with the Annunciation. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced her divine selection to be the mother of Jesus. Church tradition and early non-biblical writings state that her parents were an elderly couple, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. The Bible records Mary's role in key events of the life of Jesus from his conception to his Ascension. Apocryphal writings tell of her subsequent

Significance of oil lamps in major religions of the Holy Land: Judaism Lamps appear in the Torah and other Jewish sources as a symbol of“lighting” the way for the righteous. The wise, and for love and other positive values. While fire was often described as being destructive, light was given a positive spiritual meaning. The oil lamp and its light were important household items, and this may explain their symbolism. Oil lamps were used for many spiritual rituals. The oil lamp and its light also became important ritualistic articles with the further development of Jewish culture and its religion. And you shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive-oil for the light. That a lamp may be set to burn continually” Exodus 27:20“When you set the lamps. Byzantine Bronze Bracelet and Ring Set
Byzantine Bronze Bracelet and Ring Set dia brace let: 66 mm dia ring: 20 mm weight: 77 g The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the ... moreempire reached its greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Ancient Byzantine Medieval Christian Pentagram Bronze Ring 500-600 AD
About The Byzantine Jewelry Byzantine jewelry was a full continuation of the Roman traditions which were kept alive behind the high walls of the new capital. The Carolingian(early 742 AD) and the later Ottonian courts(start 962 AD) were linked to the Byzantine Empire and adopted their fashion resulting in the northern European Romanesque ... morejewelry style. It is important to note that the emperor's

It is truly a very beautiful, natural gemstone, and will easily fool most anyone, even many jewelers, into believing that it is a diamond. High quality natural semi-precious zircon is exceeding difficult to distinguish from the highest quality diamonds. In fact zircon was used for hundreds of years as a diamond substitute- and many of the royal"diamond" gemstones from some of Europe's most prestigious Renaissance-era collections turned out to be zircon. Handcrafted 13ct Topaz Ancient Egypt Sun God Ra Magick
Handcrafted Genuine Natural Russian Thirteen Carat Oval Cut Red Topaz Semi-Precious Gemstone. Contemporary High Quality Sterling Silver Ring(Size 7– Resizing Available) ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Siberia, Russia. CLASSIFICATION: Bright Red Russian Topaz Oval Cut Semi-Precious Gemstone. SIZE: Length: 16mm. Width: 13mm. Depth: 9mm(thickness) All measurements are approximate. APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 12.98 carats. NOTES: Resizing is available. 14kt solid gold setting is also available. DETAIL: In the ancient world topaz came from Topazion. An Island in the Red Sea now called Zabargad. In the ancient world, topaz was thought to protect against evil and to the ancient Egyptians, the sparkle of topaz symbolized"Ra" their sun god. Here’s a magnificent, sparkling, vibrantly hued red topaz semi-precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. ... moreGorgeous and vividly hued, this striking semi-precious gemstone is of very high quality and possesses breathtaking luster. It has been hand cut into a sparkling, brilliant, faceted oval cut semi-precious gemstone with lots of flash and depth. As you can see, this is an exceptionally good quality gemstone. Certainly to the eye it is nothing less than perfect, it is truly a beautiful, sumptuous, and regal-sized semi-precious gemstone. Though both pink and red topaz occur naturally in Siberia. It generally tends to be a bit lighter in shade than is the case with this specimen. So I suspect that it’s likely(though not certain) that it was heat-treated. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a Russian artisan, part of a centuries-long heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Under magnification the gemstone shows the unmistakable characteristics of having been hand crafted. The coarseness of the handcrafted finish is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment, or to detract from the value of a gemstone. Based upon surviving transcripts of her dreams and on the voluminous records of her trial before the Inquisition, Lucrecia's Dreams” traces the complex personal and political ramifications of Lucrecia's prophetic career. This hitherto unexamined episode in Spanish history sheds new light on the history of women as well as on the history of dream interpretation. Charlatan or clairvoyant. ... moreSinner or saint, Lucrecia was transformed by her dreams into a cause celébre, the rebellious counterpart to that other extraordinary woman of Golden Age Spain, St. Theresa of Jesus. Her supporters viewed her as a divinely inspired seer who exposed the personal and political shortcomings of Philip II of Spain. In examining the relation of dreams and prophecy to politics, Richard Kagan pays particular attention to the activities of the street-corner prophets and female seers who formed the political underworld of sixteenth-century Spain. Medieval Christian Gilt Bronze Processional Cross Figure of The Virgin Mary
A very high quality late Medieval gilt bronze figure of the Virgin Mary. Dating to the 15th-16th Century A.D. The Virgin standing veiled. Wearing long, thickly folded robe, her head tilted down and to the right. She holds both hands before her in prayer. The piece of unusually fine quality; delicately modeled, with stippled surface and sensitive casting. Much gilding remains. Of Central or Southern European origin. The piece likely once adorned a processional cross. The remains of the original attachment(presumably to one arm of the cross) can still be seen on the underside of the piece. Processional crosses were. As their name suggests, carried before followers in a Christian procession, normally in a Church or Cathedral. Several examples are known from the 15th-16th Century and depict the crucified body of Christ with the Evangelists(often ... morein the form of circular roundels) on the arms of the cross. St. John and the Virgin Mary are sometimes represented in full figural form either side of the body of Christ. 1 The present figure is of an unusually fine quality with particular care being given to the treatment of the folds. Even at the back, which presumably would have been hidden for most of the time. Height(not including base) 2 3/4 inches. Provenance: Ex. German private collection. Antique 19thC 3¼ct Topaz Ancient Persian Magic Talisman
Antique Genuine Natural Russian Three and One-Quarter Carat Emerald Cut Faceted Blue Topaz Semi-Precious Gemstone. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. CLASSIFICATION: Pastel Blue Topaz Faceted Octagon. SIZE: Length: 10mm. Width: 7mm. Depth: 5mm(thickness) all measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 3.18 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the ancient world topaz came from Topazion. An Island in the Red Sea now called Zabargad. Topaz was thought to protect against evil and to the ancient Greeks and Persians, it was believed to be effective as a talisman which would protect against evil enchantments. Here's a gorgeous, sparkling pastel blue topaz semi-precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. Gorgeous, vibrant, and vividly hued, ... morethis striking semi-precious gemstone is of very high quality and possesses breathtaking luster. It has been hand faceted hand faceted into a sparkling, brilliant emerald cut gemstone with lots of flash and depth. The cut is also known within the industry as an"octagon" The gemstone is virtually flawless, even under a 5x glass. Certainly to the eye it is nothing less than perfect, it is truly a beautiful little blue gemstone. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. This gemstone has great luster and sparkle. And to the eye is completely transparent, but one cannot say with absolute certainty that it is absolutely flawless. True, any blemishes it possesses are not visible to the naked eye, and even

NEW Byzantium Roman Empire Art Cities Emperor Constantine Orthodox Christianity
Byzantium: The Empire of the New Rome by Cyril Mango. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: Phoenix Press(2005) 334 pages. Founded by the Emperor Constantine the Great in 324 A.D. as"The New Rome" The city of Constantinople was to become the center of the powerful, vast, heterogeneous Byzantine world. Until Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453 A.D. the city was the capital of an empire which stretched at one time from Gibraltar in the west to the banks of the Euphrates in the east. Astoundingly rich, this civilization left behind a legacy of manifest art, architecture and literature, inspired by Orthodox Christianity. Professor Mango's authoritative survey covers all the fundamental aspects of Byzantine culture and way of life; peoples, languages, society, the economy and trade, the disappearance and revival of cities, monasticism and ... moreeducation. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. Unblemished. Unmarked, pristine in every respect. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. Time Life Great Ages of Man Age of Faith Superb Pix
Time-Life Great Ages of Man Series– Age of Faith. CONDITION: Very good. Like new. Lightly read if read at all. Very little edge wear and corner bumping. Close to"like new" conditon. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 192 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1965) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily ... morelife, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular vo

NEW Roman-Byzantine 10 Portraits Women’s Daily Life Scholars Religion Court Life
The Byzantine Lady: Ten Portraits. 1250-1500 by Donald M. Nicol. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 143 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 1996) ISBN: 0521576237. What kind of lives did women in the Byzantine Empire lead? Just how subservient were they in so male-dominated a society? In this collection of biographies Donald M. Nicol uncovers the unexpected fact that in the later years of the empire. At least, some aristocratic women enjoyed influence and exercised initiative. The ten ladies whose lives are described here did not complain of male oppression. Instead, despite the conventions of caste and court, they found an outlet for their talents in religion, patronage, friendship and scholarship. They left a lasting influence on the society in which they lived. The story of their achievements offers new perspectives on the Byzantine Empire, ... moreand a fascinating insight into the lives of women in past times. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: This is a lively collection of ten short. Annotated and illustrated biographies of aristocratic ladies of the final years of the Byzantine Empire. Some were ambitious mothers; others, unhappy wives. Some were nuns or scholars. One became the wife of a Turkish sultan and the stepmother of a famous son. Another became the champion of the Greek refugees in Venice after the Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453 A.D. Their stories demonstrate the enterprise of Byzantine women in the male-dominated society of their time. A follow-up to author's successful book"The Immortal Emperor" this is a unique contribution to the study of women in late Byzantine Society, and to history in general. Ancient Roman Bronze Armor Plate Plaque AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Armor Plate Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman Bronze Artifact. Armor Plate Segement with Strap/Belt Loop on Back. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) 3rd Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 74 millimeters. Width: 50 millimeters. CONDITION: Very good. Sound integrity. No cracks, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Good finish. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is very handsome piece of Roman bronze which appears to have been a piece of armor plate from a Roman Legionnaire. There is a crushed bronze loop which clearly was a fastening device made to accommodate a leather belt. Strap, or tie of some sort. The Roman Legionnaire was by and large a heavy infantryman, and such bronze plates were not uncommonly employed as armor. Although the Roman Legions ... morewere a magnificent military and political force, they were almost entirely heavy infantry. They relied on foreign“auxiliary” units to add complements of archers, slingers, light cavalry, and light infantry. Most archers, slingers, light infantry, and mounted cavalry were auxiliary units(Cretan, Numidian, Baleric) recruited from Roman Provinces, whereas the heavy infantryman of the Roman Army was armed with short sword, spear, shield, and body armor. Lower paid than the Roman citizen-soldiers. Such auxiliary units were nonetheless permanent units attached to specific Legions. Numidians were used as early as the third century B.C. by the Romans to provide light infantry armed with slingers, bows and arrows, as well as cavalry armed with bows and javelins. Though the Numidians provided both light infantry and light cavalry for the Roman Legions, and in the form of archers, spearman, and slingers; they were most favored for their spearmen. Julius Caesar for instance preferred Baleric slingers and Cretan archers(Baleric from a Mediterranean Island off the coast of Spain; and Cretan from of course Crete) This piece of bronze armor has been mounted onto an oak frame plaque

Byzantine Lead Seal of St Nicholas, ca 10th-11th Century A.D.
Onto one face is incised a bust portrait of St Nicholas; the reverse with lines of Greek text. Byzantine lead seals frequently bear religious iconography. But the image on the seal was more than mere decoration. As objects associated with personal correspondence and authentication. Seals bearing religious iconography offer a means towards an investigation of the private piety of their owners. Individuals from a broad spectrum of Byzantine society are included since seals possessing numerous titles of dignities and functions survive. Motives determining the choice of sphragistic religious iconography are varied and complex. It is commonly assumed that the owner of a seal chooses his or her homonymous patron saint. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the ancient world topaz came from Topazion. An Island in the Red Sea now called Zabargad. In the ancient world, topaz was thought to protect against evil and to the ancient Egyptians, the sparkle of topaz symbolized"Ra" their sun god. Here’s a magnificent, sparkling medium blue topaz semi-precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains ... moreof Russia. Gorgeous, vibrant, and vividly hued, this striking semi-precious gemstone is of very high quality and possesses breathtaking luster. It has been hand cut into a sparkling, brilliant, faceted emerald with lots of flash and depth. The cut is also known within the trade as an octagon. As you can see, this is an exceptionally good quality gemstone. Certainly to the eye it is nothing less than perfect, it is truly a beautiful, sumptuous, and regal-sized semi-precious gemstone. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted into an“old fashioned” also known as“cushion cut” by a Russian artisan. Part of a centuries-long heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Though Russia does have some virtually unique deposits of naturally colored dark blue topaz, most blue topaz this dark in color has been heat-treated, so it would be safe to assume that this gemstone has likely been heated in order to achieve this deep blue color(of course heating gemstones is no more undesirable or uncommon than is heating/baking bread– it’s been done since before recorded history began) Under magnificat

It’s a very handsome accent which marks the rings as being somewhat“upmarket” as does the fact that it was designed to hold a gemstone. The ring was not actually recovered with the original gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz, orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” or lapis lazuli. The ring is of one-piece construction, much like a contemporary ring. The more archaic rings produced by Roman and medieval artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a sep

Early Christian Clay Oil Lamp Byzantine Judaea Israel Palestine Phoenicia 400AD
Genuine. Gorgeous, Intricately Patterned, Well Preserved Ancient Byzantine/Phoenician/Early Christian Holyland(Judaea) Terra Cotta Oil Lamp about 400 A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Byzantine/Phoenician/Judaean Terra Cotta Oil Lamp with“Bee Hive” Style. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire(Ancient Accho. Phoenicia) Fifth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 90 millimeters(3 2/3 inches) Width: 62 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Height: 44 millimeters(1 3/4 inches) CONDITION: Excellent. Good integrity. No breakage or contemporary repairs. One ancient hairline crack filled in and“cemented” by fine sand. Soot stains around wick hole consistent with use in ancient Judaea. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the fifth century A.D. It is from the period shortly after the final collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Which ... moreleft Byzantium in the East in isolation, and facing the very“barbarians” who had plundered Rome. The Roman Provinces of Judaea, Palestine, Phoenice, and Syria were now part of the Byzantine(Eastern Roman) Empire. Its origin is the area referred to as"The Holy Land" during Roman occupation, just to the north of the province of Judaea. The style is what we refer to as“beehive pitcher” as it does resemble a pitcher as much as an oil lamp, and the resemblance to a beehive is all too apparent. It seems that in the ancient world this oil lamp had a hairline crack. We never noticed it until we cleaned it, but if you look closely you can see what looks like a hairline cracked which has been filled in a repaired in an almost miraculous meticulousness which could only be attributed to fantastically talented miniature craftsmen. It seems what happened was that over the course of fifteen or sixteen centuries. The fine sand(almost talcum power fine sand) this was buried in slowly filled the hairline crack. You can see that the“fill” material is several shades lighter than the body of the lamp. Then as perhaps the ground occasionally became damp from rain, this talcum

Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is an exquisitely colored, exceptionally good quality precious gemstone. This particular gemstone was hand cut and faceted into a three-sided pyramid with a softly rounded base. The result is an exquisite and incredibly beautifully colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. NEW Trotula Medieval Compendium Women’s Medicine 12thC Salerno Italy Gynecology
The Trotula: A Medieval Compendium of Women's Medicine. Edited and Translated by Monica H. Green. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 301 pages. Publisher: University of Pennsylvania; 2001) ISBN: 0812235894. The"Trotula" was the most influential compendium on women's medicine in medieval Europe. Scholarly debate has long focused on the traditional attribution of the work to the mysterious Trotula. Said to have been the first female professor of medicine in eleventh or twelfth-century Salerno, just south of Naples, then the leading center of medical learning in Europe. Yet as Monica H. Green reveals in her introduction to this first edition of the Latin text since the sixteenth century, and the first English translation of the book ever based upon a medieval form of the text, the"Trotula" is not a single treatise ... morebut an ensemble of three independent works, each by a different author. To carrying degrees, these three works reflect the synthesis of indigenous practices of southern Italians with the new theories, practices, and medicinal substances coming out of the Arabic world. Arguing that these texts can be understood only within the intellectual and social context that produced them. Green analyzes them against the background of historical gynecological literature as well as current knowledge about women's lives in twelfth-century southern Italy. She examines the history and composition of the three works and introduces the reader to the medieval culture of Salerno from which they emerged. Among her findings is that the second of the three texts, On the Treatments for Women" does derive from the work of a Salerno woman healer named Trota. However the other two texts, On the Conditions of Women" and"On Women's Cosmetics" are probably of male authorship, a fact indicating the complex gender relations surrounding the production and use of knowledge about the female body. Through an exhaustive study of the extant manuscripts of the"Trotula" Green

AD700 Roman Byzantine Constantinople Engraved Sculpted Starburst Ring Size 6¾
Size 6 3/4 Genuine Ancient Engraved Roman/Byzantine Bronze Ring Eighth Century A.D. Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Sculpted Starburst Design Bezel and Engraved Band. Evidences moderately light wear consistent with infrequent(ancient) usage. Evidences very little corrosion. Oxidation, pitting(frequently caused by contact with caustic soil while buried) Was professionally restored and conserved. Eastern Roman Empire(Constantinople) Eighth Century A.D. Fits ring size 6 3/4(U.S. Bezel: 11mm(diameter) 2mm(thickness) Fixed Width 5mm Band. Diameter: 21mm*19mm(outer diameter) 17mm(inner diameter) Weight: 3.29 grams. A very well preserved bronze ring circa eighth century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring has a“sculpted” starburst design which is composed of two rings ... moreof raised dots surrounding the center“star” This is a very elaborate rendition of a very popular theme. Though the starburst design was very common and seemingly very popular, this ornate depiction of a starburst while not unique, is certainly very exceptional. The bands of the ring are not understated or drab either! As you can see the bands are engraved/stamped with a very intricate design created five raised parallel, again composed of raised dots. Raised dots was the technique most often employed to emboss. Stamp, or engrave small items of jewelry such as this. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The wear evidenced is not excessive…but some of the raised dots which comprise the“starburst” are worn a little flat, and there are some very, very slight indications of wear on the bands as well. Of course, the ring was made to be worn…and almost two thousand years ago that’s exactly what someone did…they wore it. There are no cracks, chips, or other impairments to its integrity. The Romans were of course very fond of ornate personal jewelry including bracelets worn both o

Inventing the Middle Ages HCDJ 477pgs Life Law Society
Inventing The Middle Ages: The Lives. Works, and Ideas of the Great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century by Norman F. Cantor. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 477 pages. Publisher: William Morrow and Company. Inc; 1991) ISBN: 0688094066. Our images of the Middle Ages. Of wars, tournaments, and plagues; of kings and saints, of knights and ladies; are so vivid that it might be difficult to believe that they are recently minted. However in this ground-breaking work, Norman F. Cantor explains that our current notion of the Middle Ages as an epoch is new, born of the twentieth century, when European and American scholars looked back from their own war-ravaged times and discovered another unique and troubled culture in the era between the fall of Rome and the rise of the Renaissance. In their hands. The century's great intellectual ... moreconstructs, modernism, formalism, and the rest, became instruments of revelation, uncovering the roots of modern social institutions and cultural traditions in the Middle Ages. The medieval world was therefore not simply excavated through systematic research. It had to be conceptually created, emotionally confronted, artistically modeled. It had to be invented. This book is the story of that invention through the telling of the lives and works of twenty of the great medievalists of this century. The scholars who are the focus of this book fashioned their interpretations of the Middle Ages out of the emotional wellsprings of their lives. For example. The Oxford fantasists C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, working in the ruins of the British Empire, envisaged alternative morally ordered and inspiring worlds. Percy Schramm and Ernst Kantorowicz were Nazis. Schramm was close to Hitler and published his warm memories of the Fuhrer in 1963. Kantorowicz tried to cover up his earlier fascist politics after he accepted a position at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies. Both, not surprisingly, studied medieval kingship. Marc Bloch. A Jew who died fighting for the French Resistance,

DETAIL: A very large and intricate silver/bronze alloy ring of late Byzantine/early Renaissance origin. Probably seventeenth ... moreor eighteenth century, provenance is Eastern Europe. The ring bears a very elaborate pattern all the way around the band which is entirely extant except that it is moderately worn, especially toward the back of the band. However despite the moderate wear, the entire intricate design is still discernable. This would be normal wear caused by the hand being held flat on a table…and the back of the ring coming in contact with objects during normal daytime activities(such as holding table utensils, etc) Likewise the bezel is intricately executed, with tiny little serrated teeth retaining the“gemstone” again showing some flatness from wear, but still intact. As described. There is some wear to the bands, and the elaborate pattern is worn flat to a moderate degree. But of course, some signs of wear are to be expected from a ring several centuries old. It was produced with the idea that someone would purchase it and wear it– and that is exactly what happened. It is clear that several centuries ago this was amongst someone’s favorite rings, and that they wore it with pleasure and frequency. However the entirety of the intricate metalwork pattern remains intact and d

"El Escorial" Palace 16thC Medieval Spain Habsburg Bourbon Lepanto Ottoman Turk
Wonders of Man: El Escorial by Mary Cable and the Editors of the Newsweek Book Division. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 172 pages. Publisher: Newsweek; 1971) El Escorial is the fascinating story of the vast monastery-palace that was the spiritual and political heart of Spain in the turbulent sixteenth century when Europe erupted with religious discord and military rivals; the New World beckoned with promises of rich colonial empires; and Spain had reached its imperial zenith. Philip II of Spain. Arch-rival of Protestant England’s Queen Elizabeth I, built“El Escorial” to reflect his Catholic piety and the military might of Spain. At the Escorial Philip charted the Counter-Reformation as well as Spain’s military forays throughout the world: Lepanto, scene of Spain’s stunning victory over the“invincible” Ottoman Turks; the Netherlands, ... morebloody site of a protracted and futile attempt to suppress rebel troops; and the English Channel, final battlefield for the famed Spanish Armada in its ill-fated attach on Elizabeth’s island empire. El Escorial” also chronicles the tragic history of Philip II’s Habsburg successors; the decadent opulence of the Spanish Bourbon’s court; and the desecration of the Escorial by French troops during Napoleon’s 1808 Iberian campaign. Supplementing the engrossing narrative are some one hundred illustrations. Old engravings, sketches, and sculpture. Among the artists represented are Sanchez Coello, El Greco, Velazquez, and Goya. A special section. El Escorial in Literature” includes excerpts from the works of such famous writers as Friedrich Schiller, Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Dean Howells, Benito Perez Galdos, and Nikos Kazantzakis. A reference section, including a chronology of Spanish history, a genealogy of Spanish succession, a guide to the Escorial complex itself, a selected bibliography, detailed information about the illustrations, and an index, concludes the volume. CONDITION: Inside pages are pristine. Clean, unmarked, tightly bound, undamaged/unmutilated except

The Byzantine Empire(or Byzantium) was the direct continuation of the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Centered on the capital of Constantinople. It is also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, primarily in the context of Late Antiquity, while the Western Roman Empire was still in existence. Both"Byzantine Empire" and"Eastern Roman Empire" are historiographical terms coined and applied in later centuries; its citizens continued to refer to their empire as the Roman Empire(Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων, Basileia Rhōmaiōn; Latin: Imperium Romanum) or Romania(Ῥωμανία) While the Western Roman Empire fragmented and collapsed ... morein the 5th century, the eastern half continued to thrive, existing for an additional thousand years until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Byzantine Bronze Triptych Icon
Byzantine Bronze Triptych Icon measures folded: 60 mm/ 62 mm weight: 87 g The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached ... moreits greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Byzantine Empire. Lead Bulla Seal, c. 5th- 12th Century During the Byzantine period. Lead bullae(singular, Bulla) were widely used to seal and identify the sender of correspondence and containers in shipment. An iron, pliers-shaped instrument, a boulloterion, was used to impress the designs on a lead bulla seal. NEW Age of Saint Constantine the Great 1st Christian Ancient Roman Emperor 330ad
The Age of Constantine The Great by Jacob Burckhardt. Translated by Moses Hadas. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 400 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1983) The first Christian Emperor of Rome. The man whose reign is said to have heralded the Middle Ages, conqueror, hero, even superman. Much has been claimed for Flavius Valerius Constantine. Resounding legends present a shining and pious image of the character of Constantine. But there are in the background facts which add to the picture touches of gray and even black. These do not detract from the emperor's greatness. Indeed they give the complexities of his character and career added depth and fascination. The date of Constantine's birth, the events of his early life, the precise nature of his famous vision of the cross before the battle that won him his rule; his reasons ... morefor liquidating his son, even the vexed question of his baptism into the Christian religion will always be surrounded by doubt and suspicion. But of one thing there is certainty: Constantine was the supreme figure on the European stage. Dominant in every sphere. He built Constantinople and founded a dynasty which was to survive for centuries. He constructed a bridge between the old era and the new, and in a sense, constructed also a ladder between earth and heaven with his concept of the interrelationship of Church and State. Most remarkably, he took a Roman world that was almost in ruins and built, single-handedly, an empire based on meticulous administration. For good or for evil, he deserved to be remembered as"Constantine the Great" CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished EXCEPT that there is a black remainder mark(a little black dot made with a black marker) on the bottom edge of the closed page edges indicating that the book is unsold surplus inventory(not visible of course on individual opened pages) Pages are crisp. Clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Satisfaction guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PLEASE SE
