This is a large fish tank decoration of the roman ruins. It is lightly used with a couple dark spots on top of it. The bottom is lightly painted green and brown. It is not dirt or debris. It measures 11 inches tall, 19 inches long, and 2-3 inches deep. It has a little picture of permanent marker or something on the bottom, that I took a picture of. The Crimean, now part of present-day Ukraine, was home of the Tartars(and before them ancient Greek settlements during the first millennium B.C. across the Black Sea from what was at the time this ring was produced, the Ottoman Empire, modern day Turkey. The ring bears a very elaborate pattern on the sides of the band wrapping most all of the way around to the back of the band. The alloy is known as"billion" which is silver mixed with bronze, brass, or copper. This particular piece is of high bronze/brass/copper content, so the ring looks quite a lot like gold, enough so that it would fool a lot of people. The ring is quite substantial. And the design of the ring and the detailed metal work evidenced in the bezel and bands is very elaborate! There is however some very light wear to the sides of the band toward the back of the textured pattern, and it has been slightly flattened by wear. On both sides of this are two Tibetan silver, decorations, they measure, 1.5” across x 1.25” tall X approx. 1/32 thick. Silver has not been tested. Here is a superb example of an ancient Near Eastern artifact which reflects the biblical description in Genesis of the Tower of Babel. Viking or Merovingian ZOOMORPHIC decorated bronze sheet belt part ?
A most interesting fragment from a bronze belt? or similar embellished piece. It is decorated with a representation of zoomorphic animal faces. the piece is@ 1 1/2 inches wide and 4 inches long, although it is only a short section, what remains of this belt is in solid condition and the decoration is clearly visible to the naked eye. The pattern probably covered the whole belt, it is formed by a series of punched dots. The dots are very small, struck with a fine sharpened point, they do not pierce the bronze only leave an embossed mark. The animal heads are distinct, but i cant identify what they represent. Many zoomorphic designs represent specific creatures but others are generic creatures just to form a pattern. this was found in the south of France in the languedoc region which is west towards the Pyraneese mountains. From the style i ... moream inclined to think that this could be Merovingian in origin. It is similar to viking designs but seems to be from an earlier period, where it was found is a known centre for Merovingian culture so this could also be an indication of it's origin. An interesting item, worthy of further research, i have drawn on a piece of paper as near as i can what the design is incase the photographs do not show it clearly. Size 8 Genuine Ancient(Roman) Byzantine(Macedonian) Bronze Ring with Floral Pattern Bezel with Sculpted Bands 9th-11th Century A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Byzantine(Eastern Roman Empire) Bronze Ring. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Macedonia) 9th-11th Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 8(U.S. Diameter: 20 1/2mm(outer diameter) 18mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 18mm(diameter) Fixed 3 1/2mm Width Band. Weight: 4.08 grams. CONDITION: Excellent! Completely intact. Very light wear consistent with slight use, and little porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A very well preserved bronze ring circa ninth to eleventh century A.D. from Byzantine(Roman) Macedonia. As you can see. The ring is very elegant in design. The ring is constructed by the very simply method of joining the ... morebands by brazing both ends to a bezel. This was a rather primitive technique as opposed to rings which were cast in one piece, bands and bezel unified and not created separately- much like the style of a contemporary ring. The bezel either mimics a flower(something looking like a sunflower) or is supposed to suggest a large central gemstone flanked by a circumferential perimeter of accent stones(the inspiration still a flower) The bands as you can see are sculpted with a raised beaded rope which embellishes the entire bezel. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact- though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. As mentioned the ring does show some moderate overall wear. But of course you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchased. And without any regard to twenty-first century posterity, that precisely what happened!
