ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN BRONZE BATTLE AXE HEAD 4500 years old
This bronze axe head is not from Luristan but was made hundreds of miles to the west of Persia. It predates Luristani weaponry by 2000 years. This is also not a tribal weapon. This is an excellent example of one of the world's first manufactured Military weapons.By that statement I mean to say that these were made in large quantities to equip particular ranks of a country's army.Per Ebay policy I cannot mention this axehead's country of origin but if you know archaeologica you already have that answer. There is an old excavation inventory number painted on the back of the shaft hilt(195)I believe this was excavated probably in the 1930's when there was huge effort by the British to unearth the tombs and mudbrick temples of that area.I did purchase this item from Great Britain.313 grams. The shaft is 3 5/8" from the back, the ... moreblade is 3 5/8" from the forward edge of the shaft hole, one chip on the upper shaft edge, nice original patina. This item was made to exacting standards and it has"perfect" symmetry. If you are an ancient history buff you understand one of the reasons Phillip of Macedon conquered all of Greece was because of the standard of his weapons production. They maintained weapons factories and were able to standardize production and quality. This country's army also had standardized weapon production. Many bronze axeheads from other parts of the Near East are readily available on Ebay. This type is much harder to find.
Ancient Near Eastern Early Iron Age Iron & Bronze Sword - 900 BC
A rare Ancient Near Eastern bronze and Iron sword. Dating to approximately 900 B.C. A very rare example. Notable for the almost complete preservation of its iron blade, which is often missing or so badly corroded that it has been removed and replaced with a bronze blade. The blade itself is of triangular form and of thick section. Decorated with three converging ridges on both sides, which accentuate the length and robust feel of the weapon. The hilt is of typical form, made of bronze with discoid pommel and ridge decoration on the handle. The tang insertion of the blade is visible from the back of the hilt, entering the pommel. Perhaps in antiquity the pommel may have been capped with a limestone or lapis-lazuli ornament. Length of sword: 17 3/4 inches. Condition. Exceptional. Unrestored. Blades such as this are seldom encountered on the ... moreart market. It was common in the early-middle part of the last century, when these blades were found, for the often very badly corroded iron blades to be snapped off by unscrupulous dealers. Thus one commonly finds on the market today that these original iron blades have been swapped with"more pleasing" bronze examples from another weapon. What is most unusual about this piece is that not only has the original blade been kept, but it is in an extraordinary state of preservation. Provenance: Ex. Fench private collection. Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Figure Of An Embracing Couple On Horseback - 1000 BC
An ancient Near Eastern bronze figure of an embracing couple seated on horseback. Produced around 1000 BC, possibly in Luristan. A rare, tender and beautifully abstract scene. The figures reduced to the essence of form. Their features anonymous, but with their hands looped round to meet at the centre. Both seated on a horse, the animals legs and tail have been shorted though the head is large and stylised, with lightly incised eyes and reins running from the mouth. This wonderful piece has a touching humanity that transcends age or culture. The artist has intentionally disregarded the need for figural accuracy. Using this absence to emphasise the emotive nature of the scene. In a sense the detail is unimportant, rather the love and affection takes precedence. The effect is tangible, allowing us to feel the connection with its creator. A beautifully ... moretouching piece. Reflecting a powerful human sentiment rarely displayed in Near Eastern art from this period. Height: 1 7/8 inches. Height mounted: 2 3/8 inches. Length: 2 1/4 inches. Condition: Good. With wear and encrustation synonymous with an ancient artefact. Mounted on a bespoke bronze stand and unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired 1990's, London. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animal’s neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheep’s neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. This artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. Whetstones are some of the most characteristic of all Luristan bronzes. And are composed of a bronze handle, with stone grinder. They were used for sharpening
Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Age Persian Luristan Bronze Spear - 1400 BC
One of the finest ancient spears that we have handled. This large Persian Luristan spearhead is a beautiful example of its type and dates to the Near Eastern Bronze Age. Around 1400- 1200 BC. This elegant yet powerful blade survives with complete edges and is of typical lanceolate form. With pronounced mid-rib and long tang with a ‘rat’s tail’ curl at its end. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Stag Attachment With Lapis Lazuli - 1000 BC
A rare ancient Near Eastern Luristan bronze attachment of a stag. Dating to around 1000 BC. A piece of delicate beauty, the ancient artist has skilfully captured the elegant majesty of the animal. The creature is shown resting. Its legs tucked beneath the body, indicated by light incisions to the surface of the bronze. The neck is straight, whilst the head is turned quizzically towards the viewer, the eyes and forehead inlaid with beautiful lapis lazuli. The ears are attentively pricked up as if the animal has been alerted to a sudden noise, the horns are naturalistically modelled, shown curving subtly behind the animal's head. This wonderful piece was produced by the expert metalworking society of the ancient Near East. The Lurs. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Mace Head With Snake Decoration - 1000 BC.
A beautiful ancient Luristan Persian bronze mace-head. Dating to around 1350-1000 BC. Luristan weapons are renowned as being both highly imaginative and advanced for their period. This remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well provenanced example, coming from one of the most prominent collections of the 20th century. The bronze mace head with cylindrical. Ridged socket and body, decorated with blunt projections, likely stylised ears of corn. Running in between the projections are a series of snakes writhing up towards the top of the weapon. The function of this rare weapon is something of an enigma. It dates to a period when iron blades had begun to replace bronze weapons, at least functionally in battle. In all likelihood this fascinating artefact was intended to be carried as a display of wealth and rank, or possibly for enacting ... moreceremonial sacrifice. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. The Achaemenid Persian(Hakhamaneshiyan) Empire came to a close nearly five generations later. With the death of Darius III, or“Darius the Great” 336 BC—330 BC) who was killed in Bactria(modern-day Afghanistan) during the conquest of Alexander the Great.
