ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN BRONZE BATTLE AXE HEAD 4500 years old
This bronze axe head is not from Luristan but was made hundreds of miles to the west of Persia. It predates Luristani weaponry by 2000 years. This is also not a tribal weapon. This is an excellent example of one of the world's first manufactured Military weapons.By that statement I mean to say that these were made in large quantities to equip particular ranks of a country's army.Per Ebay policy I cannot mention this axehead's country of origin but if you know archaeologica you already have that answer. There is an old excavation inventory number painted on the back of the shaft hilt(195)I believe this was excavated probably in the 1930's when there was huge effort by the British to unearth the tombs and mudbrick temples of that area.I did purchase this item from Great Britain.313 grams. The shaft is 3 5/8" from the back, the ... moreblade is 3 5/8" from the forward edge of the shaft hole, one chip on the upper shaft edge, nice original patina. This item was made to exacting standards and it has"perfect" symmetry. If you are an ancient history buff you understand one of the reasons Phillip of Macedon conquered all of Greece was because of the standard of his weapons production. They maintained weapons factories and were able to standardize production and quality. This country's army also had standardized weapon production. Many bronze axeheads from other parts of the Near East are readily available on Ebay. This type is much harder to find.

Ancient Near Eastern Early Iron Age Iron & Bronze Sword - 900 BC
A rare Ancient Near Eastern bronze and Iron sword. Dating to approximately 900 B.C. A very rare example. Notable for the almost complete preservation of its iron blade, which is often missing or so badly corroded that it has been removed and replaced with a bronze blade. The blade itself is of triangular form and of thick section. Decorated with three converging ridges on both sides, which accentuate the length and robust feel of the weapon. The hilt is of typical form, made of bronze with discoid pommel and ridge decoration on the handle. The tang insertion of the blade is visible from the back of the hilt, entering the pommel. Perhaps in antiquity the pommel may have been capped with a limestone or lapis-lazuli ornament. Length of sword: 17 3/4 inches. Condition. Exceptional. Unrestored. Blades such as this are seldom encountered on the ... moreart market. It was common in the early-middle part of the last century, when these blades were found, for the often very badly corroded iron blades to be snapped off by unscrupulous dealers. Thus one commonly finds on the market today that these original iron blades have been swapped with"more pleasing" bronze examples from another weapon. What is most unusual about this piece is that not only has the original blade been kept, but it is in an extraordinary state of preservation. Provenance: Ex. Fench private collection. Acquired in the 1960's. Mounted on a beautiful custom made bronze stand. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. Ancient Near Eastern Syro Hittite Pottery Beaker - 1900 BC
An unusual Syro-Hittite pottery beaker. Dating to the early 2nd Millennium B.C. This piece sits on a disc-like base with acorn-shaped body and flaring mouth. What makes the piece most unusual are the four applied"masks" that decorate the shoulder of the vessel. They have a distinctive zoomorphic appearance. Especially when viewed in the inverted position, and are perforated longitudinally. Thus, it is possible that the vessel would have been suspended by means of a cord that passed through these perforations. This piece belongs to one of the world's earliest Empires. The Syro-Hittite civilization of the early 2nd Millennium B.C. The Hittites were famous for their skill in building, use of chariots and ironworking. The Hittite empire expanded far enough from its base in modern Anatolia, Turkey, that it eventually came into conflict ... morewith Egypt, under Ramesses II. Syro-Hittite art is noted for its buff earthenware figures, often referred to as idols. There was clearly an appreciation for the abstract representation of human and animal forms, although they were rarely incorporated onto vessels. This vessel is a beautiful representation of Syro Hittite art. Height: 5 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Age related encrustations and root markings. Provenance: Ex. Ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic Painted Pottery Bowl - 3400 BC
A rare and extremely well provenanced ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic pottery bowl. Dating to between 3600- 3400 B.C. This expansive cream buff ware bowl has been hand modeled with steeply curved shoulders. A flattened circular base and a wide mouth featuring a subtly everted rim. The outer body of the vessel is decorated with a double lined band in dark purple, with a geometric design below, possibly depicting highly abstracted animals in motion. The inside is painted with a frieze of three stylized ibex, and further geometric designs that likely reflect contemporary basketry patterns. This motif, combined with the series of vertical lines that accompany it expertly creates the illusion of rotary motion. This bowl is characteristic of the luxury ceramics found at Tepe Sialk in Iran produced during the Chalcolthic(Copper) Age. Aside from ... moretheir technical excellence. The painted ornamentation of these vessels demonstrates a progressive visual wit that remains highly striking even today. Produced at a time of fertile creatively that is widely renowned as a golden age of ancient Near Eastern ceramics; this well provenanced piece is a rare and important vestige of ancient artistic development. The region of Luristan was home to a rich tradition of bronze-working in the early part of the first millennium BC. These ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying ... morewinter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which this society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months, when the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" A striking piece of ancient near eastern bronze working. This artefact is a fantastic example of its type and was produced by one of the pre-eminent artisan societies of the ancient world. Please note that this piece comes with a specially constructed bespoke bronze stand(as shown) Length: 14 1/2 inches. Condition: Restored across middle. Otherwise in good condition. Provenance: Ex. collection of Arthur M Sackler. 1913-1987. Sackler was one of the pre-eminent collectors of the 20th Century, as well as being a major philanthropist and patron of the arts. Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Figure Of An Embracing Couple On Horseback - 1000 BC
An ancient Near Eastern bronze figure of an embracing couple seated on horseback. Produced around 1000 BC, possibly in Luristan. A rare, tender and beautifully abstract scene. The figures reduced to the essence of form. Their features anonymous, but with their hands looped round to meet at the centre. Both seated on a horse, the animals legs and tail have been shorted though the head is large and stylised, with lightly incised eyes and reins running from the mouth. This wonderful piece has a touching humanity that transcends age or culture. The artist has intentionally disregarded the need for figural accuracy. Using this absence to emphasise the emotive nature of the scene. In a sense the detail is unimportant, rather the love and affection takes precedence. The effect is tangible, allowing us to feel the connection with its creator. A beautifully ... moretouching piece. Reflecting a powerful human sentiment rarely displayed in Near Eastern art from this period. Height: 1 7/8 inches. Height mounted: 2 3/8 inches. Length: 2 1/4 inches. Condition: Good. With wear and encrustation synonymous with an ancient artefact. Mounted on a bespoke bronze stand and unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired 1990's, London. Ancient Near Eastern Alabaster Cosmetics Dish - 3100 BC
An ancient Near Eastern alabaster cosmetics dish. Dating to around 3100- 2900 B.C. This elegant piece is carved from a single piece of cream colored alabaster and stands upon a tiered. Rectangular foot. The spherical bowl is surrounded by a squared mouth. The rim is decorated with confidently incised circles between a double line border. This artifact dates to an era during which the fog of prehistory beings to lift in the ancient Near East. And the details of history move slowly into view. We can perceive a state of almost incessant strife, when the major population center of the Tigris-Euphrates plain struggled against each other in a destructive rivalry, often ending with the ruin of entire cities and massacre of their inhabitants. Yet this piece alludes to another side of life. Graceful and refined. It would likely have been used to mix ... morecosmetics. Sitting in the household of the wealthy elite who were at the heart of a new centralized administration regulating all aspects of the economy, from crafts to agriculture to the rationing of foodstuffs. A stylish piece from an enigmatic and formative period in human history. Width: 4 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Age related wear and encrustations, as shown. Provenance: Ex UK private collection. Ancient Near Eastern Luristan Bronze Moufflon Head Whetstone Handle - 1000 BC
A stunning piece of abstract art. This highly decorative ancient Luristan bronze whetstone handle dates to around 1000 BC. Coming from one of the pre-eminent collections of ancient art in the 20th century, this piece reflects a character, emotion and skill of a particularly high quality, and stands as one of the finer Luristan bronzes we have handled. Cast using the lost wax method. The lower body of the piece transmutes seamlessly into the form of a stylised moufflon(wild sheep) its exuberant horns curling back towards the body to form a pair of rings. The large eyes, pricked ears and open mouth are confidently reflected, whilst the legs, tucked in towards the body, give the impression that the beast is jumping through the air. These elements combine to lend a sense of life and motion that one does not often encounter in Luristan bronze ... moreworking. Emerging from the animal’s neck is another. Striking scene, a small moufflon is shown being attacked by a strange creature, biting the face of the young animal. The shape of the head might lead one to conclude that the aggressor is a wolf, yet the distinctly anthropomorphic hands gripped round the sheep’s neck suggest a mythical beast of some kind. It seems likely that this scene is referencing a narrative tale that would have been immediately apparent to the ancient viewer, yet is now lost to us. This artefact was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artefacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. Whetstones are some of the most characteristic of all Luristan bronzes. And are composed of a bronze handle, with stone grinder. They were used for sharpening

Ancient Near Eastern Sasanian Carnelian Seal Stamp - 500 AD
An ancient Sasanian carnelian seal of a rooster. Dating to around 500 AD. The cockerel was not a common motif in Sasanian art, and its appearance on stamp seals such as this is relatively rare. Set on a beautiful carnelian stone of deep red. The bezel carved with a standing cockerel in the classic, elemental style of Sasanian seals. The stamp perforated through the centre for attachment to a necklace in antiquity, now long since perished. Worn as both a symbol of authority and as a conduit to sympathetic magic. Stone seals were popular in the Persian Near East during the Sasanian period. The rooster was revered by the Zoroastrian Sasanians as a servant of the god Sros against sorcerers and demons. Known in middle Persian as pesdaxsag(foreseeing) The rooster was also believed to maintain the order of the world, announcing the dawn and waking ... moremankind to the new day.
