Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. This gemstone has great luster and sparkle. Antique 1897 Book Everyday Roman Life in Pliny's Time 74 Fabulous Pix Lithograph
Roman Life in Pliny’s Time by Maurice Pellison. Translated from the French by Maud Wilkinson, with an Introduction by Frank Justus Miller. DESCRIPTION: Hardback: 315 pages. Publisher: The Chautauqua-Century Press; 1897) This remarkably well-preserved book was published in 1897 in New York by The Chautauqua Century Press. Judging by appearances it’s hard to believe it is well more than a century old. There is a little edge wear to the hard cover corners and the spine heels top and bottom. The pages are a little yellowed toward the edges(but not dry or fragile) All to be expected. What is not expected is that there is very little spotting. No markings whatever(except for a pencil price on the inside front end paper) and the book remains tightly bound. It’s in very nice condition, no tears– even in end papers. Clean covers, nice illustrations. ... moreFrom the introduction: The story of growth from a group of unconnected hill-top settlements upon the Tiber to a political organization of world-wide dominion seems hardly to belong to sober history. Great national development has mostly come from the union of nations already existing, or from the powerful impetus contributed by parent nations to colonial stocks. But the Roman Empire was unique in this respect. It sprung from a single city which, though it extended its sway over the whole known world, never ceased not to be alone the seat of government, but the government itself. Rome was the nation. From her forum radiated to every land those military roads. The highways of commerce and dominion that made her rule a vital thing wherever her conquering legions found their way. This masterful city not only absorbed all real power, but gathered up all the learning, the art, the customs and religions of the nations and made them her own; until to be a Roman came to mean to be a citizen of the world, and Roman citizenship was a coveted prize to be attained at any cost of blood or treasure. This wide dominion was attained by gradual and natural growth. Extending over hund

Herculaneum Pompeii Mount Vesuvius Buried Intact Treasure Ancient Rome 79AD Pix
The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost ... moretwo thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,
HUGE Chronicles of Ancient Rome Lavish Illustrations Art Architecture Maps Huns
Ancient Rome: Chronicles of the Roman World by Timothy R. Roberts. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 176 pages. Publisher: Metro Books; 2000) ISBN: 1567997244. A huge. 12½ x 11 inch sumptuously illustrated history] Rediscover the glory that was ancient Rome, the civilization that gave the western world much of its government, architecture, art and literature, in this lavishly illustrated history by Timothy R. Roberts, who recounts with verve and insight the chronicles of one of the most influential eras of all time. Situated on the banks of the Tiber, surrounded by the famed seven hills, ancient Rome was the center of the western world for centuries. Within a quarter century of its fou8nding by Romulus in 753 B.C. Rome’s citizens established a republic, which gave its people unprecedented rights and privileges. Over the next several ... morecenturies Rome also developed a taste for conquest; its dominion gradually extended throughout much of the European continent and into northern Africa. Ironically Rome’s might overpowered its own government, and republic yielded to empire. The glory days of the Roman Empire would last well into the fourth century A.D. and long after its inevitable decline and fall, Rome’s legacy lives on. This lively history brings each aspect of ancient Rome to life for the modern reader. From the great leaders, and from the artists whose works are still studied today to the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Here too are explanations of the formidable achievements in law, engineering, architecture, government, literature, and philosophy that ensure that the legacy of ancient Rome will live on forever. Ancient Rome” features stunning photographs of architectural and artistic treasures, plus colorful maps that depict the varying parameters of the Roman Empire though its many phases of conquest. In addition a timeline highlighting the most significant events in the history of the Empire provides an overview of the period. A richly illustrated and absorbing account, Ancient Rome” presents a

DETAIL: The first mention of citrine in the ancient sources comes from the fourth century B.C. Greeks. The Greeks and Romans used citrine for intaglios and in jewelry as well during the first and second centuries. And believed that citrine was the crystallized essence of sunshine. Citrine was also believed to aid in digestion and cleanse toxins from the body, and it was even carried as protection against snake venom. The gemstone was regarded as sacred to the healing deities Apollo(God of Health) and his son, Aesclepius(God of Healing) Since trade in the first centuries AD was brisk between the Romans and India, it's very likely that the Romans got their stones from southern India, an area not only rich in gems but also a major bead lapidary center. Here’s a large, very clean, golden yellow oval citrine which originated in the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. The gemstone was hand crafted and finished by an eighteenth century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval,

Dark green beryl is known as emerald. And tends to be infested with inclusions. Light blue-green beryl on the other hand, aquamarine, tends to be transparent, lightly colored, and more frequently found eye clean to flawless. What light blue-green is to aquamarine, light green is to“green beryl” Green beryl is aquamarine, except that whereas ... moreaquamarine light blue-green color comes from iron impurities, the light green of beryl comes from vanadium. Like aquamarine, green beryl is generally found in better qualities than emerald, which is generally heavily included and fractured. But did you ever hear of pink beryl? Pink beryl is known in Russia as pink emerald– which is an apt description as emerald is beryl– as the only difference between them is that pink beryl is colored by manganese impurities; whereas other varieties of beryl are colored blue to green by impurities of iron(aquamarine) chromium(emerald) and vanadium(green beryl) For those few Americans who have ever heard of pink beryl, they might know it better as“Morganite” so named for the gemstone collector and capitalist J. P. Morgan. Just when exactly pink beryl(or if you prefer. pink emerald” or“Morganite” was first discovered is a source of contention. This particular specimen came from Elba Island, Italy, sometime around 1880, and was subsequently hand cut in Yekaterinburg, Russia. However an American gemologist by the name of George Kunz is officially credited with the first“discovery” of pink beryl in California, and subs

Many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. The most famous is the Black Prince's"Ruby" a magnificent 170-carat red s Looking like very flashy, sparkly, radiant bright red intensely hued ruby or padparadsha(red-orange) sapphires, one instantly knows they are not merely ... moretourmaline or garnet due to the tremendous brilliance and flash of the gemstones. Are they corundum; sapphire or ruby? They have all the fire and sparkle of precious gemstones. Actually if you were able to examine the crown jewels of the royal families of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Europe from England to Russia, you would find many fabulous examples of these gemstones. And had you been able to ask the actual owners of these gemstones, royalty all, or their royal jewelers as to the identity of these gemstones, they would have answered ruby or sapphire– corundum. But history would prove them wrong, as many of the greatest, most massive, and most valuable rubies and sapphires in the crown jewels of Europe’s royalty were…spinel. With nearly the same hardness as corundum, and similar flash and brilliance(refractive index) spinel has been mistaken for rubies, sapphires, and other precious gemstones for centuries. These very intensely colored and brilliant gemstones share this heritage. Mined here in Chelyabinsk Oblast(county) Russia, the gemstones were hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elabora

Width: 5mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.92 carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In ancient times opal was included among the noble gems and was ranked second only to emerald by the Romans. Who sometimes referred to opal as the"cupid stone" they also considered to be a token of hope and purity. Mark Antony loved opal. Indeed, it is said that he so coveted an opal owned by Roman Senator Nonius that Mark Antony banished the Senator after he refused to sell the almond sized stone. Legend states that one Roman Emperor offered ... moreto trade one-third of his vast kingdom for a single opal. The Romans used opal both for jewelry and in the production of cameos. Worn as a talisman, the Romans believed that opal had to power to cure disease, and also considered opal to be a token of hope and purity. The Roman scholar and historian Pliny(23-79 A.D. in his 37-volume work, Historia Naturalis" described opal as having"the fire of the garnet, the brilliant purple of the amethyst, and the sea-green of the emerald all shining together in incredible union" Here are two absolutely gorgeous. Natural"black" opals from Australia originally produced in the 1920's. These are very uncommon gemstones, difficult to procure. The world's entire production of gemstone quality black opal comes from one claim in Australia known as"Lightening Ridge" These two gemstones were originally solid black opal, however they were so thin that a backing was added so as to strengthen the gemstone and reduce its fragility. For those unfamiliar with black opal, it is somewhat akin to, if you will image, black abalone mother of pearl- which is to say, mother of pearl with a black background. Even witho

A Golden Legacy: Ancient Jewelry from the Burton Y. Berry Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum by Wolf Rudolph. With an Essay by Barbara Deppert. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 332 pages. Publisher: Indiana University Art Museum; 1995) ISBN: 0253209137. Published at $39.99] Jewelry is a necessary luxury. With costly materials and labor-intensive manufacture which establish it as extraordinary and sumptuous. Its nearly universal function as a commemoration of important passages, most notably engagements and weddings, deems it a necessity, even among the most austere of human beings. The urge to enhance our basic appearance with jewelry has evidently been part of human nature since our earliest beginnings. Thus the jewelry that survives, even from the most ancient of cultures, offers fascinating insights into our common humanity. For this ... moreand many other reasons, the vast holdings of ancient jewelry bequeathed by Burton Berry to the Indiana University Art Museum are most significant. Ambassador Berry was an indefatigable collector who assembled a remarkable collection tracing ancient jewelry from its beginnings in the Chalcolithic era to the early Christian and Byzantine ages. The collection tells us much about changing ideas. Technologies, and tastes which shaped and reshaped the ways in which gold and silver, gems and stones, were used to make adornments. In addition, the sampling presented within this text, assembled out of his collection, provides some fascinating glimpses beyond the traditional inner circle of Greene and Rome. The jewelry presented takes the reader to the outposts of the ancient world. To Anatolia and the Balkans, to Iraq and the Levant, which though far-flung, were nevertheless active and vital parts of the ancient cosmos. In a way, these distant places are even more fascinating than the heartland, as they combine native traditions and vigor with colonial and imperial styles and aesthetics. Because Burton Berry collected on the“edges” of the ancient Classical world, and because he was

The"bezel" or face of ... morethe ring is engraved with a classic starburst design accentuated with a periphery line. The engraved starburst design is very well preserved and very finely engraved. It is preserved in very good condition. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. and the starburst design engraved into the surface of this bezel is exceptionally well executed and well detailed. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship. Not terribly uncommon, but nicely done. Aside from the very slight wear to the ring caused by some Roman citizen using it during his lifetime. There are no other detractions. The ring is of one-piece construction, much like a contemporary ring. The more archaic rings produced by Roman artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. As you can see, the design is quite elegant, and is very large and bold in character. Though not an uncommon theme, the level of preservation of this specimen is quite exceptional. Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 373 pages. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2003) ISBN: 0142003697. In 1508. Despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter(though famed for his sculpture David) Michelangeo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling recounts the four extraordinary years Michelangelo spent laboring over the vast ceiling while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Battling against ill health, financial difficulties, domestic problems, the pope's impatience, and a bitter rivalry with the brilliant young painter Raphael, Michelangelo created scenes so beautiful that ... morethey are considered to be among the greatest masterpieces of all time. A panorama of illustrious figures converged around the creation of this magnificent work, from the great Dutch scholar Erasmus to the young Martin Luther. Julius Caesar The Civil War HCDJ 360pgs Illus. 4in1Book
The Civil War Together with The Alexandrian War. The African War, and The Spanish War by other Hands by CEASAR Translated with an Introduction by Jane F. Gardner. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 360 pages. Publisher: Dorset Press; 1985) ISBN: 0880290412. Gaius Julius Caesar was born in 100 B.C. into one of the oldest families in Rome. His family had opposed the patrician Senatorial oligarchy. And Caesar followed suit by supporting the“popular” side in politics. His rapid advancement to the newly created perpetual dictatorship of Rome made him one of the most controversial figures in ancient history. The Civil War” traces Caesar’s swift rise to power, beginning with intransigence at Rome and taking us to the start of the Alexandrian War in the Fall of 48 B.C. His terse and restrained style elegantly conceals the true propagandist aim ... moreof his writing. While recounting history he seeks to present himself in the best possible perspective. He deliberately omits many of his setbacks and discreditable actions, and frequently points out examples of dishonorable behavior by his enemies. In his“Commentaries” Caesar tells how he crossed the Rubicon with his Cisalpine Legions, entered Rome, subdued Spain, defeated Pompey at Pharsalus and installed Cleopatra on the throne of Egypt. Despite all his efforts to improve the honesty and efficiency of the government, his taste for autocratic rule made him too many bitter enemies. A conspiracy was hatched, and Caesar was assassinated in March 44 B.C. less than a year after he had assumed the dictatorship of Rome. This edition of“The Civil War” includes three accounts allegedly written by his lieutenants: The Alexandrian War” The African War” and“The Spanish War” The books includes many illustrations, appendixes, a Glossary of Persons and Places, and maps and sketch plans. CONDITION: Absolutely blemished except for extremely light edge and corner shelfwear to the jacket. And extremely light rubbing to the dustjacket(the jacket is high gloss black and burgundy a
Pope & Heretic Intellect vs Inquisition Renaissance Executing Scientists Bruno
The Pope and The Heretic: The True Story of Giordano Bruno. The Man Who Dared to Defy the Roman Inquisition by Michael White. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 234 pages. Publisher: Perennial. An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers; 2003) ISBN: 0060933887. Giordano Bruno challenged everything in his pursuit of an all-embracing system of thought. This not only brought him patronage from powerful figures of the day but also put him in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Arrested by the Inquisition and tried as a heretic. Bruno was imprisoned, tortured, and, after eight years, burned at the stake in 1600. The Vatican"regrets" the burning yet refuses to clear him of heresy. But Bruno's philosophy spread: Galileo, Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Gottfried Leibniz all built upon his ideas; his thought experiments predate the work ... moreof such twentieth-century luminaries as Karl Popper; his religious thinking inspired such radicals as Baruch Spinoza; and his work on the art of memory had a profound effect on William Shakespeare. Chronicling a genius whose musings helped bring about the modern world, Michael White pieces together the final years; the capture, trial, and the threat the Catholic Church felt, that made Bruno a martyr of free thought. To the eye the finish of the metal is exceptional. The slight blemishes due to porosity are simply not discernible. Of course in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite distinct. Antique 19thC ½ct Spinel Medieval Europe’s Crown Jewels Gemstone
Antique Genuine Natural Russian One-Half Carat Faceted. Handcrafted Vibrant, Intense Padparadsha Red-Orange Heart Cut Semi-Precious Spinel Gemstone. CLASSIFICATION: Faceted Red Spinel Heart. ORIGIN: Chelyabinsk Oblast. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: 5mm. Width: 5mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.51 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Often mistaken for ruby or sapphire in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. The most famous is the Black Prince's"Ruby" a magnificent 170-carat red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels. Looking like a very flashy, sparkly, radiant bright ... morered intensely hued ruby or padparadsha(red-orange) sapphire, one instantly knows it is not merely tourmaline or garnet due to the tremendous brilliance and flash of the gemstone. Is it corundum; sapphire or ruby? It has all the fire and sparkle of a precious gemstone. Actually if you were able to examine the crown jewels of the royal families of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Europe from England to Russia, you would find many fabulous examples of this gemstone. And had you been able to ask the actual owners of these gemstone, royalty all, or their royal jewelers as to the identity of this stone, they would have answered ruby or sapphire– corundum. But history would prove them wrong, as many of the greatest, most massive, and most valuable rubies and sapphires in the crown jewels of Europe’s royalty were…spinel. With nearly the same hardness as corundum, and similar flash and brilliance(refractive index) it has been mistaken for rubies, sapphires, and other precious gemstones for centuries. This very intensely colored and brilliant gemstone shares this heritage. Mined here in Chelyabinsk Oblast(county) Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russi

Scotland, known as"cairngorm" and since ancient times has been a favorite ornamental gemstone. Smoky quartz was very popular with the ancient Romans, who often used the stone for carving intaglio seals. Cairngorm is also ... morethe national gemstone of Scotland and has been considered a sacred stone for millennia, a belief dating back to the Druids. For centuries Smoky Quartz has also been commonly set into the pommel of the Scottish dirk, or“black dagger” a long dagger with a straight blade that is a prerequisite of Highland costume. Here are two richly colored, antique, hand faceted, very uncommon semi-precious gemstones from Victorian-era Scotland, specifically Mount Cairngorm. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, these gemstones are known either as“Smoky” or“Cairngorm” Quartz. Generally“crystal” clear, the smoky tone is caused by the natural radiation emanating from granite stone the quartz is exposed to while buried in the earth. These are two very handsome gemstones, completely transparent, with beautiful sparkle and luster. They are exceptionally clean, water clear, and possess gorgeous smoky brown color. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into somewhat coarse briolettes, an old fashioned cut reflecting their heritage, by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of M

WEIGHT: 1.62 carats(a pair) NOTES: Other setting styles(euro clicks. Lever backs, kidney wires, ball/stud dangles) are available upon request, both in 14kt solid gold and in 14kt gold fill. DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the ... moremost highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here are two gorgeous, richly colored natural dark blue sapphire precious gemstones from the Ural Mountains of Russia. These gemstones were hand crafted into this beautiful faceted ovals by a 19th century Russian artisan. The results are two exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstones with lots of fire and sparkle. They are considerably lighter in color than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires; more along the lines of the medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent, bright blue colored"sapphires" sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mountains of Russia have been producing good quality, natural sapphires for centuries. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is consi

HCDJ Villas & Palaces of Europe Medieval Renaissance
Villas and Palaces of Europe by Adalbert Dal Lago. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 157 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) ISBN: 0600012352. The social background of an age had an important influence on the design of great houses. Thus the elegant but comparatively small Palladian villas of the Veneto were as much a product of sixteenth century Venetian society as the grand chateaux of the Loire were a reflection of the elaborate French court. In selecting examples of villas and palaces for this book. The author, Adalbert Del Lago has naturally made a very personal choice. Yet each example has a place in one of the currents of European architecture which makes it particularly interesting or significant. The author also takes advantage of the detailed captions which accompany the plates in order to describe the architectural details ... moreand to point out the sources and influences of each house. Palladio was the first European architect to seek and achieve an intimated relationship between a building and its landscape. Conceived as integrated elements, and it is the evolution of this idea which links and yet contrasts the magnificent villas and palaces described. The superb illustrations enable us to compare the Villa Rotonda, Chenoceaux, Fontainebleau, Longleat, and the Schonbrunn, with many other less well-known but equally elegant houses which grace Europe’s countryside. Though very simple Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century AD. It would fit a woman of light to medium build, and with that caveat, is completely ... moreand eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderate porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in fairly gentle soil conditions. The consequence is that though you can see upon close scrutiny clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. You can clearly see. Of course, a series of shallow scallops caused by corrosive soil conditions. Naturally in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite distinct. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the moderate porosity, the bracelet remains intact and wearable. And hand, to the casual observer, it simply appears a nicely toned bronze bracelet. However undeniably it bears the scars of having spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil cond

This particular specimen is a beautiful violet color with blue undertones– depending on whether the light is white(outdoors) or yellow, it will vary between violet and violet-blue in color. It is quite striking, very handsome and gentle in tone, the color very soft and understated, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped ... moreand polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not a flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen to casual scrutiny it simply appears to be a beautiful, unblemished star sapphire. However close inspection will reveal a few variations in the tone and a few internal blemishes. Of course here in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite obvious. But in hand, life-size, they simply are not discerned when casually viewed. It is only when you examine it very carefully that you will notice some color zoning and a minor flaw or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and particularly star sapphires. Color zoning is quite common in sapphires, and unless very obvious, is generally not seriously detrimental. Known as a"star" sapphire because of an optical effect known as an"asterism" orie

HUGE Illustrated Guide Classical Mythology 200 Pix Salvadore Dali Roman Greek
The Illustrated Guide to Classical Mythology by A.R. Hope Moncrieff. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 160 pages. Publisher: Studio Editions; 1994) Throughout recorded history the peoples of the world have invented stories to explain the great mysteries of nature. And to justify the culture in which they live. For the Ancient Greeks the sun rose and set because Phoebus-Apollo drove his dazzling chariot daily across the sky, while winter came on those months of the year when Persephone, daughter of the earth goddess Demeter, descended into the underworld. Helped or hindered by the gods, human heroes were also the subjects of legendary tales, many of them representing a particular quality: the cunning of Odysseus, for example, the beauty of Helen or the courage of Antigone. Timeless in their appeal, the Greek myths have continued to fascinate ... moresuccessive generations of writers, artists and sculptors throughout Western Europe. This superb collection is an abridged and illustrated edition of Hope Moncrieff’s“Classic Myths and Legends” Including such well-known tales as Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and Andromeda, the Tale of Troy and the House of Agamemnon. The ancient myths are brought to life with a vast array of fascinating pictures, showing the diverse ways in which classic heroes have been portrayed over the centuries. A wealth of images spans over 3,500 years, from the ancient“Mask of Agamemnon” to the surreal“Metamorphosis of Narcissus” by Salvador Dali. Over 200 images have been drawn from a range of sources, from ancient architecture, sculpture and vase painting, from the works of the Old Masters and the Pre-Raphaelites, and from early illustrated editions of the epic poems of Homer and Ovid. Swirling, feminine and frivolous, it was to be felt in all the arts, from the splendid architecture of the Zwinger in Dresden or the Wurzburg Residenz, to a pair of Nymphenburg porcelain lovers. The elegant vitality of the Rococo style ... moreis marvelously brought out in the illustrations while Pignatti’s absorbing text describes the arts throughout Europe’s most exuberant period. CONDITION: Very good. Sound integrity. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. One chip. DETAIL: This is a nicely preserved genuine carnelian gemstone hand-carved and finished into a bead/pendant sometime in the 1st century A.D. in Roman Provincial Thracia. As you can see. It is a rather uncommon pendant; a highly polished, tapered octagonal tube. One can almost imagine a bored artisan, tired of the same old faceted or polished sphere, trying his hand at something new, anything other than the typical polished or faceted sphere so common to the Roman world of the first century. As can be seen, a portion of the pendant was chipped off one end. Probably while worn by the original Roman citizen who owned it, it was damaged, most likely by being dropped or being dashed against something. Really, the little bit of damage does not detract from its beauty, it really only reinforces its authenticity and antiquity. Carnelian gemstones and jewelry were very popular throughout the Roman Empire. And carnelian was widely used to carve cameos and signet/intaglio rings. Since bef

Agate is probably named after its ancient source. The Achates River in Sicily, though some ancient historians believe that the word agate is derived from the Greek word"Agateес" meaning happy. ... moreA famous collection of four thousand agate bowls was accumulated by Mithradates, king of Pontus(an area along the Black Sea of present-day Turkey which was colonized by Hellenic Greeks) is illustrative of the high value the ancient world had for agate. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire, and vast collections of agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance. Hand-shaped into a tapered oblong and drilled for use as a pendant circa 1st century in the Roman Province of Thracia(present-day Bulgaria and Serbia) This piece is a genuine banded agate gemstone. It is in good condition, not cracked, chipped, broken or repaired. Of course, it was buried for almost two thousand years, so there are minor scratches and scuffs. Agate gemstones like this one were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire and earlier the Greeks, Phoenicians, Sumerians and Egyptians fashioned adornments from agate. Archeology suggests that quartz agate was favored in this way as long as 10,000 years ago. Agates were formed millions of years ago when gas bubbles occurred in volcanic rocks or lava. Silica laden water seeped into the bubbles, coagulated into a gel a

Tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's ... morecolors. In fact the name tourmaline comes from the Dutch traders who purchased gemstones from the Celanese(i.e. Ceylon or Sri Lanka) The word"turmali, meant"mixed" and the bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties which the Dutch purchased were called"turmali" parcels. The Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia have been producing quality tourmaline for centuries. Though by today’s standards not of exceptionally high quality, it is translucent and of vibrant color. In its time however, it was doubtless highly prized, though under magnification and close scrutiny it evidences numerous forgivable sins considering its age and the fact that it is hand cut and polished. Here, it is magnified 300 percent, so as stated every flaw simply screams its nature, though to the casual observer such blemishes are minimal. DETAIL: An especially nice crafted and well preserved ancient Roman bronze ring circa 350-400 A.D. As you can see. The design is simple, but elegant. The"bezel" or center part ... moreof this ring is a very elegant teardrop shape, probably intended to be in the shape of an ivy leaf. The bezel itself is decorated with a zig-zag pattern which is probably nothing more than an abstract geometric pattern, which was a quite popular theme in late Imperial Rome. The engraving does bear a resemblance to a Roman depiction of a lightening bolt, which was shield(scutum) emblem used by a number of Roman Legions, including the infamous Tenth. The tenth, which fought for Julius Caesar, also was used to put down the revolt in Judea. However as much as the engraving looks like a lightening bolt to contemporary eyes, the Roman depiction of a lightening bolt was stylistically a little bit different. So this is probably merely a pleasing geometric design, quite handsome nonetheless. The construction of the ring is of the more archaic style where the bands and bezel are crafted separately and then attached. The workmanship is quite competent however– it is very difficult to ascertain that the bands and bezel are not of one-piece construction. Despite the archaic style. The craftsmanship is not in the slightest crude. The bezel is quite sturdy, a whopping three

CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze band with very masculine and handsome features. The construction is that of a simple band clearly cut from flat bronze stock, it has the look of hammered bronze. Obviously as you can see it is a little more than ... morea simple band, as it does incorporate a large oval bezel, all part of the same piece of bronze. It also features overlapping bands at the back, which at the time it was created would have formed an“adjustable” ring. However ancient metal tends to crystallize and become inflexible, and though the ring was“adjustable” when it was originally created, fifteen or sixteen centuries later the ring size is pretty much fixed, there’s little“flex” left in the bronze bands. Very simple. Rather uncommon to the time, the ring remains in very good condition. Rather than the more archaic style of producing band and bezel separately and then attaching them together, this ring is constructed of a single piece of bronze, albeit cut from flat, hammered bronze sheet rather than molded from molten bronze. In a way, this accentuates the ring’s timeless design and modern flavor. There are clear indications that the ring was worn during an ancient lifetime long past. However this should not be a source for disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the

DETAIL: An exceptionally well preserved bronze intaglio ring circa 1st century A.D. bearing remarkable workmanship and demonstrating the technique of reverse intaglio carving. There are several photo enlargements of the intaglio bezel below. And you can see the technique ... moreused in this remarkable and ancient art form. An intaglio ring was used to press the wearer's"seal" into lead, clay, or wax, leaving an impression created by the ring's bezel. Though oftentimes the carved intaglio seal might be in the form of a gemstone such as carnelian, carved and then mounted onto a ring; frequently the intaglio seal was created by simply carving into a metal bezel– such as is the case here. Rather than in relief, the image was created recessed, and everything had to be carved in mirror image so that when a piece of clay or wax was impressed with the seal, the image would be“right side out” The recessed engraving here seems to be that of one of the sailing vessels(a cargo galley) which Rome used to transport grain from Alexandria to Rome. And other commodities throughout the Mediterranean. Close examination of the metal work(see below) reveals a remarkable illustration of the technique. One of the images directly below is a very large blow-up of the bezel– which can be viewed for detail. As you can see, several holes are drilled into the material(whether it be gemstone or metal) to provide a starting point for the engravers
