Inc; 1999) Throughout the ancient world the Egyptians were famous for their scents and perfumes. The country was considered the most suitable for the manufacture of such commodities. As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil. MARTI ET CIE 1889. It is very typical for the 19 th century. Or to be more specific, for the Louis XVi period and style that this work of art was made in. It has been fully checked and oiled by a professional clockmaker, and works and chimes perfectly and beautifully. The movement looks like a piece of gold, it is really clean! T he clock was made around 1880. First. The clock piece in the middle. We see a beautifully crafted figurine of a beautifully crafted boy, holding a stick in the one hand and a basket with fruit in the other. He was draped in the most beautifully shaped clothing, almost silk-like. He is strolling gracefully. The quality of the maker ... moreis hinted at through looking at how beautifully the silk was draped onto the man, it seems to really be moving through the air. The maker did a really good job on making the boy like so real as possible. Also the details on the vases were very beautifully crafted with a lot of flowers, very finely made. It has the original French time piece. That chimes every half and full hour. The dial was made from a nice quality and has the Roman numerals. It does have some really minor signs of age on the front of the dial. It is complete, with the winding key, bell, pendulum etc. It works perfectly. The clock piece is sturdy and ready for usage at any given time, and is to be beautifully portrayed on any mantle. You can enjoy the clock for a very long time. The movement has a stamp of MEDAILLE D’ARGENT S. MARTI ET CIE 1889. The company S. Marti is started by Samule Marti and two business partners in 1832. From 1841 was Samuel Marti the only owner of the company. He recieved several bronze medals at expositions in Paris for his work. Here we have a nice German antique mantle or bracket clock C:1880. Made by Junghans Germany and has the stamp on the back plate of the movement. It has a solid walnut wood case. As can be seen by photo's it is in good condition. This clock is sold as is. It is going but like all mechanical clocks it might need a service. I'm no expert. There is no bob/weight but the pendulum is there.See photo. The pendulum swings from left to right very fast because there is no bob(weight) The face has had a small repair see photo. It is Baroque in style. Architectural with profuse foliate decoration. Beautifully modelled and finished, bronze work of the highest quality. Open fret work to the front to allow the pendulum to be seen swinging within the case. The clock is signed to the dial(Brussels) and movement(Paris) the case and dial being made at the foundry in Brussels and the French movement made in Paris. The dial is heavily sculptured in bronze and mounted with 12 enamel cartouche letters. It is complete with original finely fretted blued steel hands and heavy convex bezel. The centre of the dial is signed H. Luppens et Cie. Bruxelles. The French movement is of excellent quality ... moreand has the H. Luppens. Paris mark on the backplate. It is fitted with the superior pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled and extensively tested by our clockmaker. Here is a handsome and rare vintage late 19th century Victorian French brass dresser table clock in the Japonisme Aesthetic taste c. 1880. Standing 10" tall. It features an Oriental design of a Japanese fan and cherry blossoms. The cream enamel dial features fabulous Aesthetic numbers. The metal and face are in excellent condition. One of the loops attaching the folding stand is replaced by a modern wire brad, but everything else is original to the clock. I do not have the key so I do not know if the clock is in working order. The clock is marked inside on the works"R. Co. Made in Paris" According to Charles Allix(in his Carriage Clock book) Richard& Cie was founded in Paris in 1848 under a different name and added a branch in London in 1857. Allix also says that the inscription"R& Co" without the full trademark probably denotes a clock handled by Richard but not made by them.
