Though presented as a government map, this map is in fact the product of private enterprise- though no doubt informed via Keeler's access to the official records of Indian Bureau. A noted by Martin and Martin(47) In 1867, seeking to take advantage of public interest in all aspects of the West, but particularly the railroad routes, William J. Keeler, an engineer working in the Indian Bureau, published a large, attractive map of the entire country west of the Mississippi. Keeler first issued this map in 1867 on a much larger format but covering a smaller area. The first edition, most examples of which were prepared as presentation copies for government officials and railroad magnates, remains quite common and measures some 47.5 x 57.5 inches. The limited market for presentation pieces no doubt encouraged Keeler to issues to two new editions in 1868 on a reduced scale. While it is not clear which of the second editions came first, or if they were published simultaneously, they are distinguishable by their size. Trippensee Planetarium Orrey Pre-1908 - Fully Working, Rare and Wonderful Piece!
Extremely Rare PRE 1908 Trippensee Planetarium Orrery. There is not a manufacturing plate on the wood arm as found on the later versions. This is a very early examples of this rare Orrey(pre-1908) as the manufacturer plate was affixed from 1908 forward. This is one of the earliest models I have ever seen and the condition is superb for the age however please see photos. This Orrery planetarium features a 6" diameter brass Sun with Mercury orbiting it. The Earth orbited by the Moon is attached to the Sun by a wooden arm. It is fully functional and shows no sign of repair of modification. All the chains that rotate each individual piece are in excellent working condition! The 3" diameter Earth has a complete map printed on it naming the countries and continents. Globe is a Rand McNally Copyright 1891. Signs of age and use are commensurate ... morewith a piece of this age and the photos are the best description. The base of the planetarium measures 7 1/2" in diameter and is also made of brass and marked with the months. Astrological signs and the seasons. The entire planetarium is in working condition with all it's original gears and chains. Overall the planetarium is 20" long and stands 14" tall. The brass sun is in very good condition with no dents of marks. Again see photos. Some of the paint on the 1" diameter Moon and 1 3/4" diameter Mercury has flaked off but they are still whole and in good condition. The map that covers the earth is in good condition showing signs of use and some ware- SEE PHOTOS. This is very rare to find an Orrery of this period and in my opinion. Superb condition. The maps of states and counties are engraved and beautifully hand colored. Fully collated and all maps and views are present. Very light foxing to the contents, the tissue guard opposite the frontispiece is creased. Minor stain to the top left inner corner of the frontispiece not affecting the image. The original decoratively embossed maroon morocco binding has been rebacked with a strip of red leather, with non-archival reinforcement to the hinges. Nice, hand colored framed map of the United States. Circa 1804.
Up for sale is a nice early map of the United States entitled"United States of America" published 1804 by Patterson in London. Just after the Louisiana purchase this is an early and rare map that still shows the"Franklinia" as existing in Tennessee. A nice piece with names of territories in the Midwest and just vast stretches of land west of the Mississippi. The piece measures approximately 9 x 11 inches. It is matted and wrapped in plastic but not framed. There is a description of the map(see photos) It also comes with a COA from a company in Texas which is attached to the back. It appears to be in nice shape with a couple minor brown spots and a touch of aging. The outlines of state s are hand colored. Including the matting it measures approximately 20 x 16 inches. The map is around 28" X 17 1/2" and the frame with glass is around 33" X 22 1/2" It weighs around 8 lbs There is some aging on the map and I tried to adjust the picures' color and tinting to get the best picture.
