The frames has a few small rubs/ scratches from handling. You can easily cover them by using Old English dark scratch oil. Because of glare and reflections on the glass. The foldout map was part of the 10th Census of the United States/ Survey Report Book. And measures 21 ¼” wide x 26” tall. It shows from Eastern Texas& Minnesota, to the US East Coast, with iron ore amounts in varying shades of brown. There is some creasing throughout with one small crease separation in upper middle about 1 1/2 inches. Non acid cloth tape has been added to upper back to support attaching to top rail. Color: original hand color Size: 14.8 x 12.1 inches 37.6 x 30.8 cm This handsome map is filled with detail and includes insets of Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. There is a large secondary Bexar region in the West that is yet to be subdivided into counties. The huge unorganized Young Territory fills the panhandle; in fact the area was subdivided into more than 50 new counties that year. Curiously Greer County is shown as part of Indian Territory. Bowen's map covers most of the modern day United States from the Rio Grande to the Pacific and from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. River systems are well delineated and forests and topography and rendered in profile. Numerous American Indian nations. As well as colonial settlements, fortifications, and trading posts are noted throughout. As Bowen notes in a curios annotation appearing in the lower left quadrant, this map is essentially a remake ... moreof Bellin's map of 1744 from a highly Anglocentric perspective. Unlike Bellin's map, here there are no political borders; instead, what is represented is the vast potential of British of British sovereignty in America from the Rio Grande to the Atlantic and the Great Lakes to Florida- mostly through expansion into and cooption of American Indian lands, which here are addressed thoroughly. The escalating tensions between the relatively few French settlers in the Mississippi and the populous Atlantic colonies of the British would soon lead to increasing encroachment on overlapping claims and, eventually, in 1754, the French and Indian War. Though a significant advancement over many previous maps, the present examples is not without errors. Two in particular bear note and are derived directly from the Bellin/ Charlevoix maps. These include Charlevoix's four fictional islands in Lake Superior- this being among the first British maps to present them- and the distended northerly mapping of the Rio Grande copied from Bellin, who based his map on De L'Isle. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and ... moretheir successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. V

The map measures approximately 32 x 25 The map was printed and then the railroad lines were added by hand. It is neat to see the layout of the States as documented in 1854. The map has two inserts. The first insert documents the Oregon. Utah, Nebraska, California, and New Mexico Territories. The second insert shows Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Eastern Countries of South America. The detail in the map is outstanding. The colors outlining the states are still vivid! I know the history of this map. It was framed between late 1920's and the mid- late 1950's, when Houston ... morestill used four digit phone numbers. It was framed by"Wellhausen Pictures and Frames. Since the early 1960's, it hung in my Pop's double-car garage, where he housed his O Gauge Model Train Layout. Pop was a member of the Houston Model Railroad Club. The Houston Model Railroad Club had their layout on the top floor of Houston's Old Grand Central Station until 1959 when it was torn down to make way for a new Post Office. This map may have been displayed there; however, I am not sure. Many of Pop's trains and items in his collection came from that layout. In the early 2000's, the map was moved to Midland, TX for safe storage after Pop's passing. It has been in storage till June of 2011 when it was appraised by PBS Antiques Road Show for an estimated value of $1000- $1200. It was placed back in storage until last month. This map is being sold in the frame seen in the pictures, so extra care will be taken when packing this item for shipping. Note: This item is also available for local pickup.
