Description: A rare and important 1818 map of the Western Hemisphere by John Pinkerton. Depicts North America. Central America and South America as well as parts of Polynesia, Siberia and Greenland. In North America, thanks primarily to the work of Cook in the Pacific Northwest the coasts are rendered with considerable accuracy. The interior of North America, particularly the American West, is still rather vague, though much of the cartography is clearly derived from Humboldt's explorations. Notes the conjectural Lake Timpanagos, often associated with indigenous reports of the Great Salt Lake. The United States, still quite small, does not yet include Florida, Louisiana, California ... moreor Texas. South America exhibits its typical clear outline and speculative interior. Pinkerton resurrects the idea of Lake Parima in Guyana- supposed site of El Dorado- which had all but disappeared from most other early 19th century maps. On the other hand, Pinkerton has dropped the Apocryphal Laguna de Xarayes, commonly located at the northern extremis of the Paraguay or Parma River. However, he does note several supposed gold mines deep in the Amazon, which may or may not reflect indigenous legends of El Dorado. Drawn by L. Herbert and engraved by Samuel Neele under the direction of John Pinkerton. The map comes from the scarce American edition of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas, published by Thomas Dobson& Co. of Philadelphia in 1818. Size: Printed area measures 22 inches high by 20 inches wide. Original, steel-engraved map of Western Hemisphere- Texas Republic, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. The depiction of the oceans and continents of the Western Hemisphere are in a globe which is 7.5 inches across. Below it are two small maps of the northern& southern hemispheres, plus a list of the principal mountains in the Western Hemisphere, along with a comparative drawing of these peaks. There is also a list of the longest rivers, with drawings comparing their lengths. All this material is enclosed within an attractive decorative border. America 1665 - Western Hemisphere by Kircher Athanasius
Very unusual map depicting all of South America and most of North America. The map is totally devoid of political detail with the exception that the floating city of Mexico is shown a bit too far north and California is named. Instead the map features the principal rivers. Lakes, mountains and volcanoes in South America. A huge crater lake, probably Lake Titicaca, is situated in the Andes and nearly the entire mountain range is shown as live volcanoes. Three sailing ships and a strapwork title cartouche adorn the map. Each map or insertion is listed individually. None of the maps were ever fully opened or used prior to this sale.
