Mitchells National Map of the American Republic of or United States of North America 1845 Augustus Mitchell Philadelphia Top& Bottom Wood Poles Great antique map for your collection. Made by that famous cartographer Augustus Mitchell. Recently picked this piece up at an estate sale. I think this was about the 3rd year that Mitchell had made this map available for purchase. Looks pretty good for a 168 year old map. Eh? Samuel Augustus Mitchell is considered one of the premier map makers in the United States and the cost of his product truly reflect that appreciation. Mitchell made this map from 1843 to 1850 in both a wall and folding pocket(only offered for a year or two) formats. So, this would be the 3rd edition of this map. Great hand coloring and details in this map. Compare the condition of this map to ones that rare map stores have ... moreavailable. The coloring and condition of this one appears superior to all that I was able to locate out there and there are only 4 of them. Other than this one that are still available to the public. Nothing like this map version that I could find on eBay. The map perimeter is squares that show further details of 32 cities and towns in the United States. There certainly is wear and tear to the map. Cracking from brittleness. You can see a large section that was torn and mended at the top out in the Mid-West. Appears to be some water spotting along the bottom edge of the map where the detailed squares are, but not into the map of the United States itself. One interesting mistake I found on the map is the location of Strausburg, PA. Should be on the east side of the Susquehanna River and then to the east of Lancaster. Folding map on four sheets joined. Folding into original covers, 8vo(binding size: 9⅝ x 6½ in. red half morocco over marbled paper boards, upper cover with gilt-lettered title label(corner and edges worn) The map and covers now apart and separately mounted for display. Inventory#22138. Historical Background First edition. And the first wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships(he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This ... moremap predates the Traveler’s Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell’s first“original” production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition(which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright) so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. Condition Original full color. The palette rich and bright. One 5-inch repaired tear at left(into Arkansas) some cracking and more minor tears at folds. Some overall browning of the sheet. Antique United States Map 1845 Augustus Mitchell Large Map Linen Canvas Back
What I have here is a 1845 map of the United States but from the legend it looks to be made in 1845 but of the United States in 1840. This is a Augustus Mitchell map. Engraved by J.H. Brightly and drawn by J.H. Young. This map looks to have been hung in a library or perhaps a school or maybe even in a town hall somewhere. It has two wooden ends in a scroll style to roll it up. It is separating from the wood because it is only held in by nails and tacks. I would imagine that it doesn't matter much because I would expect this to be framed behind some museum glass. Of course being as old as it is it does have some condition issues. Some staining. Some crackling, and some minor tears but nothing really major. The map is on a linen type or canvas back.
