The map shows many cities and counties in the eastern part of the state. The western part of the state shows Indian areas and labels like"sulphur water" salt pond" and"horsehead crossing" An inset shows the northern part of the state. Inscribed with: The Latitude and Longitude of the Saltillo Monterey Laredo Bexar Nacogdoches and the Point Where the Boundary Line Leaves the Sabine are from the Observations of General Teran of the Mexican Army" On the lower left Key of the Map states: The country southwest and west of Monclova is very mountainous and generally destitute of timber. Water is very scarce. The population is confined to the towns and villages. The soil is perfectly sterile except in valleys which can be irrigated. The mountains afford a scanty pasturage for sheep and goats. Very good wheat is raised at San Fernando and Santa Rosa. Monclova, Saltillo, Parras and in their vicinities, and large quantities ... moreof wine and brandy are made at the later place, but no cultivation is deemed profitable without irrigation. The temperature of Saltillo is cool owing to its great elevation. Monterrey is very hot. The ancient name of Saltillo has been changed by act of the legislator to LEONA VICARIO. By terms of which land is acquired in Texas, the contractor are required to locate on their respective tracts a stated number of families within 6 years from the date of each grant. The following table exhibits the number of families to be located on some of the principle tracts: Grant to Colonel Austin 1,100 families, and populations of each other grant. Sr. the boundaries of the state were still unsettled. The"stovepipe" extension reaching to the 42nd parallel is shown and the boundaries around El Paso in far west Texas are still unresolved and will be until 1850. The area west of Dallas and Fort Worth was almost entirely wild and the llano estacado atop the Caprock was largely unknown territory. This early map also shows Indian Territory which had been formed in the 1830's as well as Taos and Santa Fe which had been claimed by the Texas Republic. The general treatment of the Rocky Mountains is drawn directly from Humboldt important map of 1811, issued just 3 years prior. Centered on what would soon be known as Texas, this map covers from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay tot eh Isthmus of Panama. This remarkable map of the region, which predated Humboldt's landmark map of 1810, illustrates just how little was known of the American southwest north of Mexico. Cartographically Zatta offers little new information– for none was forthcoming form the Americas at the time– and derives most of this map from the work of Robert de Vaugondy, ... moresome 10 year prior. The mission settlements along the Rio del Nord(Rio Grande) are well noted, but other regions to the north and west remain paese incognito. Zatta sets the Rio del Palma as the northern border of New Spain(Mexico) and the border of Louisiana just west of the Mississippi, clearly defining the regional boundaries of Nuovo Messico roughly along the lines of early 19th century Texas. 1899 Large Color Map Texas This is a 100+ Year-Old Map- NOT a Reproduction(Scan of Atlas Copyright Page below) Printed on a single sheet with a fold in the center. Bordered map size is about 20" x 13.5" with margins sufficient to allow matting or framing-pictured below without the full margins to allow image to load a little quicker. Too big for my large scanner so scanned in two passes and then combined for the image below. A laser-printed facsimile of the copyright information as it appears in the atlas from which this original map was removed will be included. On a peel-off. Self-adhesive sheet. Purchasers who frame their maps frequently affix that copyright statement to the back of the frame. No break on map-scanned in two passes on a large scanner! This color map of Texas was taken from a Cram Atlas with 1899 on the copyright ... morepage and 1900 on the title page. Much of the Census material throughout the atlas appears to be from the 1900 Census. But there is some data which has NOT been updated from the 1890 Census. The maps undoubtedly represent conditions as they existed in 1895 to 1899. Principal railroads are shown and labeled. Many of these roads are now defunct while some are still being used-operated by original proprietors or by their successors. Clear demarcation of county borders and a very thorough inclusion of Cites. Town, and even many small Villages. It was engraved and printed by the Matthews-Northrup Works of Buffalo. NY. Major railroads are shown. The map is printed on medium weight paper. Blank on the reverse with the exception of area and population figures(by county from Oklahoma) from the 1890 and 1900 Census. There are no population figures for Indian Territory in 1890, but the figures for 1900 add up to a total of about 300,000 Native Americans from about a dozen"Nations" and Reservations. This printing is NOT part of the encyclopedia text, but was printed by the lithographer when the map itself was prepared.
