Description: A scarce 1846 wall map of the United States by Horace Thayer and Edward Ensign. This remarkable map covers the United Stated from Texas and the Upper Mississippi Valley eastward to the Atlantic and from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. Insets detail Oregon Territory and the newly admitted states of Florida and Texas. The map is surrounded by a decorative acanthus border framing miniature cartouches offering population and other details relative to each admitted state. The map is copyrighted to 1845. Though we have not been able to identify any examples from that year. The date under the title cartouche is 1846, suggesting this ... moreto be the second edition, updated to reflect the December 1845 admittance of Texas and Florida into the Union. The Texas inset in the lower left corner is notable for both its size and detail. The map presents Texas in an exceptionally ephemeral form reflecting the early Republic of Texas political geography. Here Texas extends westward off the map to include most of modern day New Mexico. Though not presented here, Texas at this time would also have included a long northern panhandle extending well into modern day Wyoming. The map offers an excellent county breakdown in eastern Texas with Austin, Galveston, San Antonio, and Houston, as well as a number of other early Texas cities, identified. The map sites the population of Texas around this time at a slight 140,000. The choice to not include the northern and western portions of Texas is suggestive of the Thomas Benton border reconfiguration plan which, though not adopted, would be formally presented to congress in 1850. The present map is an exceptionally beautiful example and the only we are aware of to bear the 1846 imprint. The presumed third edition, which would follow in 1847, is more common. This important American Map measures approx. 23 1/4” by 17” and is fully titled"Map of the United States/ Compiled from the most Authentic Sources. Published by Eleazer Huntington. Hartford, 1831. Copyright May 10, 1831 by E. Huntington. Offered here is the original and exceptionally rare. 1831 edition of this highly important map of the United States that was published as the country stood on the verge expanding westward to the Rocky Mountains in the years leading up to the Mexican War. The Map depicts the continental United States west to the Rocky Mountains and includes the farthest west boundaries of the possessions of the United States. Besides the extensive land mass identified as the“Missouri Territory” The map includes a large ... morearea identified as“Internal Provinces of Mexico” which a large and somewhat ill-defined land mass identified as“Texas” This important and very early. American Roll-Up Wall Map is in good condition only but is an excellent candidate for restoration and conservation. The Map features hand colored decoration and the water color wash is dark and quite very well preserved. The surface of the Map does have a very old, age toned varnish coat(likely"as issued" and the surface exhibits significant, horizontal cracking with some associated paper loss as can be seen in the scans below. There is some paper loss in the upper portion of the sheet as well as come loss in the area of the cartouche. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the content and condition of this exceptionally rare and early, Wall Map of the United States. This rare and important Roll-Up Wall Map is an good candidate for a professional repair and restoration. My search skills or a very unusual map? At first glance it appears to be an atlas. It has a hard cover as shown in the first two photos and opens like a book. However when opened it expands into one large map. The colors are extraordinarily bright and the map itself is in excellent. Almost unused. condition. The hard cloth cover is in good shape but torn along the binding at both the top and bottom. Cover is 9.5 inches X 11.5 inches. There are two grommets in the covers top about 1 1/2 inches from the binding. One on the front and one on the back. The hole does not extend through the map. Rare Antique Linen 1861 Washington Wall Map of The United States Civil War Era
This auction is for an extremely rare linen-backed 1861 Washington Map of the United States. This map measures about 68" high by 70" wide. This is NOT a reproduction. This looks quite a bit different from the United States we know today. Many states and counties had not formed. There are 1860 census figures published in the bottom portion of the map. As you might have already seen in the photos. This map is in poor condition. The paper has become rather brittle, and some large pieces have flaked off completely(missing) At some point in time, someone had tried to repair the edges with clear tape. The map has become separated from the upper wooden rod and part of the lower rod. This map also has stains/yellowing. Map of the United States of America Oblong Folio Atlas Volume. 16 lithograph folio map sheets, original hand colour, Theodor Fischer, Kassel, 1851 We are pleased to offer this extremely scarce example of one of the pinnacles of 19th century mapping of the United States- the grand survey of the expanding nation compiled by the New York surveyor. Cartographer and publisher John Calvin Smith. This historically important and lavishly produced cartographic overview consists of 16 hand coloured sheets that together comprise an enormous map of the nation as it stood at the end of the 1840s. The map sections measure 47 cm x 37 cm on 51.5 cm x 43 cm sheets, so the assembled map would measure nearly 2 meters x 1.5 meters in size. Smith and his partner George Sherman published a wall map of similar size of North America in 1843 which is more or less ... morereproduced in the two sheet inset map at lower right, but by limiting the principal focus of this map to the United States alone an exponential increase in detail was attained. Smith was one of the charter members of the American Geographical and Statistical Society and his maps were published and widely circulated by J.H. Colton but despite his prominence in American cartography little is known about his life. Very few examples of the map survive- some were backed with linen and joined to create wall maps, others were sold as loose sheets in portfolio boxes or as is the fortunate case here that has allowed for excellent presentation of the map sheets, the individual sheets have been bound in an atlas volume. Below is a composite image of how the sixteen maps would align if assembled as a wall map. Discerning collectors will recognize that this exceptional work will be a cornerstone of any serious collection of pre-Civil War United States maps- truly a rare and important cartographic record of the era. Up for your consideration: A very rare. Extremely large, and absolutely grand wall map of the United States. It is titled: UNITED STATES including Territories and Insular Possessions" It was done by Frank Bond, Chief of the Drafting Division of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior in the year 1903. The map is a historical treasure! It includes Indian. Military, and Forest Reservations,railroads, canals, and National Parks. Besides the wonderful map of the U.S. there are also many inset maps of U.S. Possessions, among them are: Alaska, the Philippine Islands, Samoa, Hawaii, Puerto Rico. Offered for sale is this large scarce 1853 J. H. Colton Wall Map of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THE BRITISH PROVINCES, MEXICO AND THE WEST INDIES Showing the Country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean in poor overall condition. It measures about 52" tall by about 59" wide and is cloth backed. The top wood rod has separated and the bottom wood is separating also, but still holding on. The edges have heavy wear and tears as you can see from the pictures. There are some tears in the center of the map also. Nonetheless, it is still a very rare and collectible Colton Wall Map. Antique Rand McNally Wall Map of United State, 1898
Wall map of United States dated 1894 and 1898. Paper on fabric with roller bar at top and bottom. Decent condition with some deterioration at bottom where it was exposed when rolled up, but most of the colors clean and clear. Shows Oklahoma divided into state and Indian Territory. It does not show Panama or the Canal, and the Provinces of Canada are out of date. Many cities missing in U.S. A great artifact for historic collections and sparking conversations. Probably from long gone school house at Patterson Iowa.

School/ Educational Wall Map Specialty Use Map VERY UNUSUAL PRESENTATION After spending 6 hours on Google I was unable to find a duplicate to this offering. I did find two similar maps that were roller mounted rather than divided into panels. At first glance it appears to be an atlas. It has a hard cover as shown in the first two photos and opens like a book. However, when opened and unfolded properly the 28(4x7) individual panels form one large 46 x 66.5 map. The map itself is linen backed and the colors are extraordinarily bright in excellent. Almost unused condition. The hard cloth cover is in good shape but torn along the binding at both the top and bottom. Cover is 9.5 inches X 11.5 inches. There are two grommets in the covers top ... moreabout 1 1/2 inches from the binding. One on the front and one on the back. The hole does not extend through the map. When fully opened the cover remains attached the maps northwest section. I offer photos of the cover. The title section, the copyright corner, the fully unfolded map, the maps connection to the cover and will take other pics if requested. Both of the roller mounted versions of this map sold for over $700. I'm starting the bidding for this map at $200.00 USD with no reserve. ITEM CONDITION Good to VG- Some significant imperfections. Flaws and repairs are noted. Item is materially sound and as represented in the photographs. No signs of restoration. This map has been carefully separated from it's original binding. There are no tears. Blemishes or damage of any kind within the decorative boarder. Very minor tanning near the edges of the sheets and the colors are still very vibrant as in the photo. Map size is 46" x 66.5" All maps and documents will be shipped well protected in hard cardboard tubes or packaging and must be insured.
