But is IN EXCELLENT condition, The details of these etchings are unbelieveable! I scanned image on high resolution, but it still doesn't show the detail as finely as it is on original. Some age toning of paper but it looks like it sat on a shelf for a century. Never opened. Map does not appear to have ever been opened. But is fragile bec ause of its age. IN REALLY NICE CONDITION. This is an interesting map in that it shows California and New Mexico and other large western United States parts not being part of the United States yet. Applying their famous motto of bel et utile to create a distinctive"modern" style of mapmaking. This example of the map(Pedley 459) is the rare second state from 1755 and is representative of the clear and well composed. Orderly style Vaugondy championed. The cartography draws upon the work of the Jesuit scholar and historian(1682-1761) and other French sources including manuscript maps of voyageurs. Featuring a fine baroque cartouche with fine decorative elements including a beaver and superb engraving work throughout, this large and handsome map will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the Great Lakes inset- note that"Chicagou" and Toronto are both named and Lake Superior presents the fictional islands of Phillipeaux and Ponchartrain. These wholly non-existent islands were the subject of negotiations at the 1783 Treaty of Paris and determined to be U.S. territory but the subsequent dispatch of survey teams of course found nothing but water. Even so the islands continued to appear on maps throughout the 18th century. New Hampshire, on June 29, 1770. His family moved to Newburyport, Massachusetts were he spent his youth. Living in Newburyport in the mist all of its maritime activities surely played a role in guiding his career. Blunts initial business ventures included a bookstore and also a newspaper which he founded called the“Imperial Herald” Blunt eventually sold the bookstore and newspaper and began focusing on navigational publications. By his own observations and consultations with sea captains, he discovered glaring inaccuracies in most of the existing navigational guides. In 1796 he published the first edition of the American Coast Pilot which has become ... moreknow as the truly first American navigation books and charts. A total of twenty one editions were published up to 1861. Blunt. Sr retired in 1826 and the business was carried on by his two sons Edmund and George William under the name E. G.W. Blunt and so noted on each chart. Edmund was appointed first assistant in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1833 and spent the next thirty three years with that federal agency. While with the agency. He continued to work with his brother George in the family business. Covers the United States from and Santa Fe north through the Missouri Territory to Canada and east to the Atlantic. The Trans-Mississippi region is exceptionally interesting with a fascinating(if somewhat inaccurate even at the time) depiction of the political geography. A long Narrow Nebraska territory extends to Canada. There is a large“Western Territory roughly where Oklahoma is today. Probably the most interesting element of this map is its curious treatment of the New Mexico territory. In the previous edition of this map. 1850, the area that is here New Mexico was part of the original Texas annexation. New Mexico Territory was created in 1850 following U.S. ... moreacquisition of Upper California(Alta California) in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago- which ended the Mexican American War. Curiously, though Tallis is fully appraised of these events, as exhibited by his inclusion of the newly created New Mexico Territory, he does not extend it westward beyond the Rio Grande to include its charter claims in Upper California. Why Tallis made this decision is unclear though it may be a case of carto-advocacy in support of Mexico. Washington and Franklin medallions decorate the right and left borders. Decorative vignettes depicts a Buffalo Hunt, Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, and the Washington Monument. The whole has the highly decorative presentation and elaborate border distinctive of Tallis maps.
