When everyone else was putting out expensive hardcover volumes, Lippincott decided a cheap atlas could be a good money-maker for those on a budget. Likely it was, but few of them survived over the years. With the exception of a couple of pages of Statical Tables, the content is entirely COLOR MAPS. 22 in all. The atlas is 10 1/4" x 12" The front cover is separated and chipped in the lower corner. The title page has a little chipping as well on the fore edge. Map Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas - 1867/1870 - AR MS LA - US
This auction is for the map of 3 American states: Arkansas. Mississippi and Louisiana from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, by Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in its original unrestored state. The colors are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very legible. There are several small tears in the map, especially along the outside edges. None of the tears has made it into the map. The seam itself is still completely intact but is a bit thin in a couple of places. The paper has some stains near the corners. I have tried to capture the most obvious flaws but all in all I think it is still a nice map. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. Complete. 63+ hand colored plates& maps from around the world in good condition overall published by Johnson& Ward. Spine is loose and splitting as shown in the images. Roughly 13 maps have small tears on the edges from people not turning the pages correctly. The New York State and Indiana maps have larger tears at the seam but they are clean tears and can be fitted rather easily if removed from the book. Miscellany Difficult to acquire original complete atlas of all the states within the US as well as the other countries in the world. Map Dimensions Folio: 18 1/2" X 15" Condition In overall very good to excellent condition. Bound in original publishers green cloth. Some minor scuffing to the extremeties. Marbleized papers at the front and rear. The only map with any"issues" is the combination map of Ohio and Indiana which has an archival repaired split at the centerfold as well as a 6" similarly repaired tear at the left side. No loss of ... morepaper. This is hardly an important map in the overall scheme of things but full disclosure always. The paper is soft and supple and NOT brittle which plagues many of the later editions of this atlas. There is some ever so subtle foxing on a very few maps. Complete but worn copy with binding becoming detached and with book block split. The maps are for the most part in very good condition with the exception of a few of the double page which are partially split at the folds. Two of the American maps, Virginia and Nebraska-Kansas, have creases in addition to center fold problem. There is no loss of paper with any of the splits. All of the maps are hand colored and in otherwise good condition. The first edition of the Johnson Atlas is quite rare compared to later editions. Several of the western maps are unique to this edition. Please feel free to ask questions. See photos.

Book is needs to be rebinded and pages are falling out of the binding. The book is pretty rough however has amazing photos. Maps, and other great information in it. This book is amazing reference guide and pictures in it are amazing. I guess that being it survived from 1893 is miracle. This is here to be sold so don't miss out. The title page is away from the book and the cloth covering has wears and missing pieces. The book does have some moisture staining and foxing and browning spots which to be expected of 153 year old book. Great for your collection or to disassemble and resell the individual pages.
