Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of this double page map printed on a single sheet is a very impressive 29.25" x 18.5" It was fastened to the atlas by a separate stub so that the entire map could be on one page rather than two. The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication ... more157 years ago. This map includes the United States showing its historic states and territories. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There is a short closed tear along the bottom of the center fold line. Confined to the border area, and a smaller closed tear near it, confined to the margin. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. The maps in this atlas were originally designed and published by Sydney Morse(brother of Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph) and Samuel Gaston in Morse and Gaston's Diamond Atlas. William Stuart bought the rights from them and republished most all the originals maps in this edition. Which includes reference to the original Diamond Atlas in the title. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, ... morematted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pic. Overall, a nice antique miniature map that would frame up nicely! It is a very interesting map refelecting the territory border changes occurring between 1857-1861 showing a very short lived Oregon Territory in what is now Idaho and an elongated Washington Territory, a large Nebraska Territory, large Utah, horitzonal New Mexico over Arizona and a rare early Colorado Territory at the time of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Size: The map image measures approximately 6 by 10 inches(15x26cm) on a 7 by 11 1/2" 18x29cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. It was originally in two halves that have now been joined with archival materials. Other than a couple of minor light handling smudges in the margins. It is very clean and would frame up nicely. Plate number 162. In excellent original condition, contains one large, full United States/ Confederate States map as the land was on December 31, 1860! There are a total of ten full US/CS maps within The Atlas, each of a different time period from start to end of The Civil War. This map shows the Federal and Confederate division as it was at the start of the war. These full country maps are the most prized, most valuable and absolutely the most beautiful Civil War maps of all! THE OFFICIAL ATLAS. As it is called, represents the culmination of decades of research after The War, and was contributed to by the military leaders of The War, civil ... moreengineers and cartographers, and was intended to be THE companion to The OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE CIVIL WAR. The complete ATLASES were not available to the public. Rather they were sent in a series of five sheets at a time, 178 sheets in total, to the three branches of government and to federal and state agencies and libraries. When THE OFFICIAL ATLAS was printed. Over a century ago, each large map sheet was folded once, neatly, left side over right and this plate has been perfectly preserved, and has retained its original sharp. Bold, crisp character. T he plate has a complete one inch border all the way around. Please note. And this is important. This is an ENTIRE Atlas map sheet. It is NOT part of a plate nor is it a cut piece, but it is a whole plate, as it was lithographed over a century ago. I will never cut pieces from these rare antique map sheets and sell the smaller slips of paper separately.
