It is printed on an"onion skin" type paper, and is hand colored. The map states: Entered by an Act of Congress, 10th July 1818, and published by John Melish, improved to 1820. John Melish was one of the early American premier mapmakers of this period. This map includes Texas, and is probably one of the earliest maps to show the new Texas borders, accepted by the US from the Treaty signed 22 Feb. 1819. It is engraved by Samuel Harrison. The map has retained most of its original folds, but has been misfolded in the past. The map has no corner loss, as it may look in the photo; it is folded back.The book is complete, along with the 4 full page maps of Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Boston, see photos. National Map of the American Republic 1845 Augustus Mitchell Wood Ends
Mitchells National Map of the American Republic of or United States of North America 1845 Augustus Mitchell Philadelphia Top& Bottom Wood Poles Great antique map for your collection. Made by that famous cartographer Augustus Mitchell. Recently picked this piece up at an estate sale. I think this was about the 3rd year that Mitchell had made this map available for purchase. Looks pretty good for a 168 year old map. Eh? Samuel Augustus Mitchell is considered one of the premier map makers in the United States and the cost of his product truly reflect that appreciation. Mitchell made this map from 1843 to 1850 in both a wall and folding pocket(only offered for a year or two) formats. So, this would be the 3rd edition of this map. Great hand coloring and details in this map. Compare the condition of this map to ones that rare map stores have ... moreavailable. The coloring and condition of this one appears superior to all that I was able to locate out there and there are only 4 of them. Other than this one that are still available to the public. Nothing like this map version that I could find on eBay. The map perimeter is squares that show further details of 32 cities and towns in the United States. There certainly is wear and tear to the map. Cracking from brittleness. You can see a large section that was torn and mended at the top out in the Mid-West. Appears to be some water spotting along the bottom edge of the map where the detailed squares are, but not into the map of the United States itself. One interesting mistake I found on the map is the location of Strausburg, PA. Should be on the east side of the Susquehanna River and then to the east of Lancaster. They have it on the west side of the river between York and Gettysburg. The map is 49.25" across. By 42" tall. Add a couple more inches for the boards that are attached on the top and bottom. It appears to me that this original map has been attached to a cotton fiber backer piece to help stabilize it at some time when it was expertly restored. That backer

Beautiful wall map from 1844 S. Augustus Mitchell. Philadelphia. Map is of the US from the Atlantic Ocean west to Texas and the Indian territories. Bordered with cities maps. Inset of upper Maine and Florida, Population information. The map is in overall good condition but needs restoration. There is some creasing throughout with one small crease separation in upper middle about 1 1/2 inches. Non acid cloth tape has been added to upper back to support attaching to top rail. Mitchell's"National Map" summed up cartographic information on the United States from the east coast to the Great Plains, including the eastern part of Texas(shown when it was still a Republic) and Indian territories to the north. Each state and territory is shown with its roads, railroads, canals, towns, and distances between towns. Insets of the tips of Florida and Maine are included, the latter showing the results of the boundary Treaty of 1842. Also indicated are territories of Indian tribes throughout the west. Three tables of population statistics are included. Of particular note are the thirty two plans of major cities that surround the main map.

For your consideration is this antique wall map of The United States of North America. Or American Republic from 1846. It was published by S. Augustus Mitchell of Philadelphia, drawn by J.H. Young and engraved by J.H. Brightly.it measures 40" tall and 50" wide, there is only 1 wood bar present and it measures about 55" across. The top border has suffered the most with heavy wear and tear including a tear and a good deal of loss. The wear is lighter on the rest of the map, but still prevalent, and the map is quite brittle. Up for bid is a very rare. Mitchell's Map. This map is from 1843 and is the National Map of the American Republic of the United States of North America. The map has seen better days but it's amazing that it survived 171 years! This is the large"school" map, measuring 39" X 41.5" It's linen backed and is in as found condition. I know it can be restored but I'll let someone else decide if they want to clean it or not. This is an amazing piece of US history! Notice how the west hasn't been settled. The size of Texas, the Indian Territories, states that stretch into Canada and a bunch of other cool items. This would make a great gift for that History buff. Mitchell Map 1844 United States, American Republic
This is a pretty cool old map. I believe it was a school room map, it is approximately 3 ft tal by 4 ft wide.You can see by the pics it is pretty worn with damage at the top all the way across and probably missing a piece of wood from the top also. 1861 Phelps & Watson American Republic Large Antique Hanging Wall Map Civil War
Auction is for the 153 year old Phelps and Watson map as pictured. Size is 38" x 26" It was printed the year the Civil War began. It has suffered from age and has cracks. Short edge tears and a 3" x 1/4" strip to the left of the Phelps and Watson label has pealed off. It is very fragile. Although it has faded over the years, most of the information is very readable. It has lots of small scenes such as one with Mexicans catching wild cattle. It shows roads, trails, railroads, proposed railroads, and pony express routes across the country. It is quite an education to study this old map. I tried to get enough photos to show the condition but photographing it was a challenge. If more photos are needed please let me know and I will do my best.
