Published at Philadelphia. Thomas, Cowerthwait& Co 1849. It contains the following maps 1. World Equatorial Projection. 2. World Polar Regions 3. Antarctic Regions. 4. North America. 5. United States. 6. Mexico and Guatimala(sic) 7. New Brunswick. Nova Scotia& C. 8 New England 9. Vicinity of Boston and Providence(these are embedded within other map) 10. Vicinity of New Haven and Hartford(these are embedded within same map) 11. Middle States. 12, Southern States. 13. State of Texas. 14. Western States. 15. Oregon and California. 16. Mouth of the Columbia River(embedded within prior map) 17. South America. 18. Europe. 19. British Islands. 20. Germany, ... moreSwitzerland& c. 21. France, Spain and Italy. 22. Greece(embedded within prior map) 23. Asia. 24. Palestine(embedded within prior map) 25. Africa. 26. Egypt(embedded within prior map) 27. Liberia(embedded wtihin prior map) 28. Oceanica. This atlas appears to have mouse damage as the gutter of the first section has been sewn. Several of the maps have stitching as well. As noted. This atlas is far from pristine-it has foxing, frayed edges and some staining throughout including some heavier staining on the maps beginning with Asia(in one corner) Some light pencil marks as well. What is notable and perhaps most interesting are the notations for the western states including"indian territory" missouri Territory, and the map of Texas with"indian Territory" noted. Many of these maps would be frame able. A nice addition to the collection of the person who is interested in the maps of the US and a dozen years before the Civil War! Note that I will traveling and away for a week beginning on Monday. This will not be mailed to the successful bidder until the following week. No reserve.

But it's in a bit rough condition. At one point the book was bound with string, so some of the double page maps have small holes in center from binding string. Edge tears, chips, spots. Map of US has larger fold tear up from bottom and into Texas. Etc.etc. I've shown you just about all the maps, so you can see condition for yourself. Very old book from 1852. Mitchell's School Atlas, Thomas Cowperthwait& Co. 28 pages. Complete with all 32 maps and tables, but there might have been a cover page that was ripped out. The spine is still holding the pages well, but the pages with the tables before the maps are tearing at the spine. Lots of staining and age wear. Maps are in very good condition with minimal staining or rips. The hard cover is warped slightly. Size is approx. 9.5" x 11.5"

All maps are copyright 1839 and the Volume offered here is a somewhat confusing version of the 1st Issue of the 1st Edition of this important School Atlas. This wonderful. Mitchell's School Atlas measures approx. 9 3/4” by 12” Included are 4 double page and 10 single page maps including a double page Map of the United States showing Texas as a republic but without the later addition of the panhandle. The Map of North ... moreAmerican also shows the Republic of Texas in its truncated form. Hudson states that the 1st issue of the 1st Edition of Mitchell’s School Atlas contains only 16 Maps(rather than 18) lacking the Map of Germany and England. The points also call for the 1st Issue to contain Maps of the United States and North America with The Republic of Texas in its smaller. Original size and for the Sultan Mahmoud II of Turkey to be listed on the first page. Hudson states that the second issue of the 1st edition contained 18 maps(Germany and England added) and the two maps showing Texas to show the Republic as its fullest size. The Second Issue also has various points related to the rulers of the different countries as listed on the first page. The Atlas offered here includes the 1st State of the Maps of North America and the United States which show the original. Small configuration of the Texas Republic and the 1st state of all of the other points listed EXCEPT that it does contain Maps of Germany and England. This rare and wonderful. 1851 Mitchell’s School Atlas is bound in its original, salmon colored, printed illustrated paper covered boards with leather spine. The binding is tight and sound but with significant soiling and staining to both the front and rear boards as well as edge wear and surface scuffing. The interior pages are complete and tight except for the double page Map of the United States which is loose. All of the maps and tables are present including the free endpapers. Overall the Maps are well preserved with light edge wear except for the Map of the United States which has some additional edge wear(affecting the margin areas only) and has an old tape repair on the reverse that reinforces the central, vertical crease and the bottom edge. The original hand coloring on all maps is bright and vibrant. There is some scattered soiling and light foxing but overall the maps are well preserved. Double page, 11 1/2 x 18 inches, edge wear and tear, foxing, lower spine tear, engraved by W. Williams, nice detail. Great map, shows Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, michigan, Illinois, Wisconisn, Missouri, and Iowa. Complete map, shown in 2 scans. I am selling this week. Mitchell's School Atlas- Second Revised Edition- Philadelphia: Thomas. Cowperthwait& Co 1846 Nice rare school book in good antique condition. Obvious wear and spotting on the front and back covers. All pages are intact to the binding- including 28 maps and 7 geographical and statistical tables. The binding is loose. But functional, and shows some loss at the top and bottom of the spine. There is aging and spotting on each page. Especially toward the borders and commensurate with use. Page corners are turned up slightly on several pages and there are markings(mostly pencil) on the inside covers. Endpapers and backs of maps. There are no significant cuts.
