1779 Phelippeaux Case Map of the United States during the Revolutionary War
1779 Phelippeaux Case Map of the United States during the Revolutionary War WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Carte Generale Des Colonies Angloises Dans L'Amerique Septentrionale. Description: This is an important and extremely rare 1779 case map of the English colonies in in North America at the height of the American Revolutionary War. Focusing on the English Colonies. This map covers the eastern part of North America from the Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, extending westward as far as modern day Galveston. Rene Phelippeaux and Brion de la Tour issued this map following the 1778 signing of the Treaty of Alliance between France and the fledgling United States, which brought the American Revolutionary effort to the attention of the French public. Cartographically this map is based upon the important John ... moreMitchell map of 1755. As a whole it presents the colonies in superb detail, identifying cities and towns, forts, roads, Indian villages and tribal territory, and coastal shoals and banks. Curiously this map attempts to offer both a French and an English mapping of the region. Phelippeaux presents French Louisiana extending eastwards as far as the Appellation Mountains and westward well into territories claimed by Spain, however, it also shows the original Carolina grant from the British crown extending westward to the edge of the map. The fact that Louisiana west of the Mississippi had been ceded to Spain following the French and Indian War does not seem to be acknowledged. What is acknowledged is the cession of Upper Louisiana, north of 40 degrees latitude and east of the Mississippi, to the British under the 1763 Treaty of Paris. This important treaty effectively gave the British control of the lucrative fur trade in the upper Mississippi Valley and eventually gave rise to the North West Company and the era of the Mountain Men in the early years of the 19th century. This map is also of particular significance for those interested in the history of the Great Lakes. In Lake Super

1780 Bonne Map NORTHEAST UNITED STATES Published During Revolutionary War RARE!
Carte De La Partie Nord Des Etats Unis 32 cm x 21 cm copperplate enraving. 37.5 cm x 26.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, J.L. Pellet, Geneva, 1780 We are pleased to offer this scarce and historically important original map of the northeast United States compiled by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) for the atlas volume that accompanied the profoundly influential Histoire philosophique et politique. Des etablissements et du commerce des europeens dans les deux Indes by(1713-1796) Bonne succeeded Bellin as Chief Royal Hydrogapher at the Depôt de la Marine in 1773 and while his principal focus was on the production of marine charts. He also published general atlases throughout his career. One of the very first maps to carry the name of the newly formed United States, the maps for Raynal's atlas put special emphasis ... moreon the nascent nation- still engaged in the Revolutionary War when the map was published. While Raynal's sympathies were with the Americans fighting for independence. He was deeply critical of the acceptance of slavery in the United States. To get a sense of Raynal's rhetoric on the subject of slavery we present an excerpt in translation from the French original: The sacrilegious yoke of oppression shall be broken as the Negro slaves lack only a chief. Sufficiently courageous to lead them on to vengeance and slaughter. Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Dutch- all these tyrants will become the victims of fire and sword. The plains of America will voraciously soak up the blood which they have long awaited, and the bones of so many wretched victims, heaped upon one another during so many centuries, will leap for joy. A fascinating snapshot of the most populous part of the new nation published in the year Benedict Arnold defected to the British. Bonne presents the cartography in his signature"modern" style with very fine horizontal lines in littoral waters that impart a distinct"3D" effect. Masterfully engraved, this well-preserved example of the ma

1776 Lotter Map of the United States at the Outbreak of the Revolutionary War
1776 Lotter Map of the United States at the Outbreak of the Revolutionary War WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Carte Nouvelle de L'Amerique Angloise contenant tout ce que les Anglois possedent sur le Continent de L'Amerique Septentrionale savoir le Canada. La Nouvelle Ecosse ou Acadie, les treize Provinces unies Description: An uncommon 1776 Mathais Albrecht Lotter map of the United States on the cusp of the American Revolutionary War. Focused on the 13 original British Colonies. This map covers from Florida to Newfoundland and t Hudson Bay, and extends westward as far as Lake Michigan, including all five of the Great Lakes(only 1/2 of Lake Superior) Some offshore details are noted particularly the fishing banks off the coasts of North Carolina, Massachusetts, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The map focuses ... moreon the 13 original colonies which are presented in considerable detail although, in some cases, with curious borders. Of note are the unusual boundaries given to Maryland and Maine. Pennsylvania has been granted the fully all of what is today western New York as north far as the Finger Lakes- which is identified as Iroquois territory. Vermont has yet to manifest. Lotter, a German cartographer based in Augsburg, no doubt intended this map to capitalize on popular French interest in the American Revolution. The elaborate title text is composed entirely in French- unusual for Lotter- and the geographical deportment of the colonies themselves betray a distinctly Franco-centric perspective. Despite the French loss of their North American territories in 1863, at the end of the French and Indian War, they must have maintained certain prejudices regarding the limits of British claims. Such is reflected in the French pre-French and Indian War convention, exemplified here, of restricting the 13 colonies to those lands east of the Appalachian Mountains. Curiously the only exception to this convention on Lotter's map is the presentation, in reference to North Caronia and Virginia, of
