Title: PLAN OF CAPE ARUNDEL A SECTION OF THE LANDS OF THE BOSTON& KENNEBUNKPORT SEA SHORE CO. AT KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE. Published: Boston, Feb. 15, 1873 Description: Lithograph on a 22 1/2”h x 29 1/2”w sheet, uncolored. Backed with linen and mounted on a board. Condition: Some fraying and chipping top edge, above the border, 2 very small losses top right. A lovely promotional plan for a“first-class summer resort” in a“situation[that] has not its equal on the coast. The plan shows some 566 housing lots, hotel sites, and parks, all on a peninsula at the outlet of the Kennebunk River and blessed with stellar views of the Atlantic. Text at the lower right extolls the areas accessibility and its scenic, recreational and other benefits. The whole is adorned by four pictorial vignettes, three of(real or idealized) vacation cottages and one of a steamer, perhaps inbound from Boston. The Sea Shore Company’s grand vision seems to have been largely unrealized, as the only element of the original plan visible on a modern map is Ocean Avenue paralleling the coastline. With a profusion of details and small towns not often seen. In near VG or better condition. Some light scattered foxing as typical[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting map. Sheet measures c. 18" H x 14 1/2" W. Includes detailed key at bottom left which explains the divisions seen on the map by color. In near VG. Mostly clean condition. Map gently toned with some light scattered spotting and soiling- mainly to margins and hardly offensive. Otherwise map remains clean and well-preserved overall. Sheet measures c. 17" W x 14 1/4" H. Antique A T Andreas 1873 Topographical United States Map Indian Dakota Territory
This auction is for an A. T. Andreas Topographical Map of the United States dated 1873. I believe it is original. And it has a fold down the middle since it came from a larger state atlas book. The map shows mountains, bodies of water, railroads and cities and towns. It shows the Indian and Dakota territories which later became the states of Oklahoma and North and South Dakota. The map is in very good condition for its age and has been taped inside a blue mat by its upper two corners and backed by cardboard. The mat/cardboard measures 32 3/8 inches by 22 5/8 inches. The actual map itself measures 27 1/2 inches by 17 inches. I notice a few minor condition issues. The map has torn slightly at its fold 1 inch from the bottom. There is one main indentation line/cut and a lighter one near it going from the top right edge of the map into New York ... morewhere it has cleanly cut through the paper. Since the paper is mounted it just looks like a faint line which is barely noticeable. I would guess it was done by an x-acto knife fairly recently) The paper has slightly yellowed on the map. There is a tiny number and price written in pencil on the lower right edge of the map under the mat, and of course there is the tape on the upper corners which I have not attempted to remove. The mat is cut slightly unevenly on the top edge. The back of the map shows the populations of the states and territories at each census from 1790 at ten year intervals to 1870. A table showing areas. Families, and dwellings from 1870, 1860, and 1850 is also printed on the back along with a long list of people who contributed to the state atlas. There are also some 1870 statistics on valuations, taxation and indebtedness in the state of Minnesota. In general this is a fascinating map which is in very good condition. It shows a developing country growing mainly along the major railroad lines of the day and large empty expanses of land far from rail and water routes.
