Rene Phelippeaux and Brion de la Tour issued this map following the 1778 signing of the Treaty of Alliance between France and the fledgling United States, which brought the American Revolutionary effort to the attention of the French public. As a whole it presents the colonies in superb detail, identifying cities and towns, forts, roads, Indian villages and tribal territory, and coastal shoals and banks. Curiously this map attempts to offer both a French and an English mapping of the region. Phelippeaux presents French Louisiana extending eastwards as far as the Appellation Mountains and westward well into territories claimed by Spain, however, it also shows the original Carolina grant from the British crown extending westward to the edge of the map. The fact that Louisiana west of the Mississippi had been ceded to Spain following the French and Indian War does not seem to be acknowledged. What is acknowledged is the cession of Upper Louisiana, north of 40 degrees latitude and east of the Mississippi, to the British under the 1763 Treaty of Paris. This important treaty effectively gave the British control of the lucrative fur trade in the upper Mississippi Valley and eventually gave rise to the North West Company and the era of the Mountain Men in the early years of the 19th century. A small part of the imaginary land of Anian is separated from the mainland by the Fretum Anian. The Jesuit missions in Mexico and Central America is depicted with a small symbol of a star in a circle. The map is decorated with a pictorial title cartouche depicting the conversion of Native Americans to Christianity. Heinrich Scherer was a professor of mathematics in Munich and a devout Jesuit. Scherer's'Atlas Novus' Was printed in Munich in seven parts between 1702 and 1710 and forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work ... morein terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. Depicts Washbash& Illinois Company land claim areas in the North-West Territory. As well as New Jersey Company, Ohio Company, Army Lands and others which surround the north of Kentucky. Within southern Kentucky are"Lands Reserved for the Virginia Troops" Tennessee is not yet a state and is occupied by the transitional South-west Territory. The map is still in very good overall condition for its' age. Appears the map has been clipped along the edges at some time in the past 320 years. Some creasing of the map that runs vertically from top to bottom. Map appears to be intact. No holes or missing pieces other than around the border. Stockdale's name would have been in the bottom margin of the map originally. Research online says that some of these maps were issued with color highlights. This one does not have that. The map was issued less than a decade after the closure of the American Revolution between the Colonies and Britain. Cannot speak to authenticity of the map. Looks old, but I am no expert. Description: This is a highly unusual and extremely scarce 1799 map of the United States by the English map publisher Clement Cruttwell. Depicts a post-colonial pre-Louisiana United States extending from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic seaboard and from Florida to Canada. Though clearly based on Guthrie's c. 1780s map of the same title. This map offers a number of important innovations and updates that make this a significant cartographic piece in its own right. This map exhibits a combinations of up to date cartographic information and references to mid 18th century colonial charters. An excellent example is Pennsylvania's northern border which is drawn extending northward as far as Lake ... moreOntario. This rarely seen border configuration references an ambiguity in Pennsylvania's 1681 royal charter. The charter suggests that King Charles II intended to grant William Penn three full degrees of north-south latitude(about 180 miles) This would put Pennsylvania's northern border at roughly 43° parallel, as shown here. Shortly before this map was drawn the Pennsylvania and New York governments settled on 42° as Pennsylvania's northernmost border. Clearly Cruttwell was relying on somewhat outdated information to construct his map. Further north another interesting example is the additional territory of Sagahadok occupying much of modern day Maine's northern tier. Sagahadok or Sagahadoc, is the legacy of an early 17th British effort to colonize North America. Technically Sagahadoc refers to the territory between the Kennebec River and Nova Scotia. In the few mid 18th centurymaps that actually show Sagahadoc, such as Faden's map depicting the United States according to the 1784 Treaty of Paris, the region is depicted as a territory attached to the Massachusetts Colony. The map covers the entire United States and is broken up into various military departments. Original, steel-engraved map of the United States: North America Index Map to Canadad and the United States, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. This map is wax engraved and was issued as part of the Rand McNally Business Atlas. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It may have few minor handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. This map shows its age as the paper has a light brownish hue in the margins along with a few light age spots. I do not see any problems with the map except the lower right corner is a little wrinkled. This piece is in great overall condition. I do not know the maker of the frame or who framed the map. I do not know the exact date it framed. This is a vintage frame holding a antique style map from the 70's and it will not be perfect.
