It is from the first edition of Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War. Which was published by McDonnell Bros. Chicago, Ill. part one was published in 1866 and part II in 1868. With the first part completed in 1866, it was one of the first works to put into perspective the account of the Great Rebellion, complete with woodcut illustrations, most of which were drawn on the spot by such artists as Winslow Homer, Granville Perkins, Livingston Hopkins and others for Harper's Weekly which chronicled the Civil War on a weekly basis. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted. Matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic. There is text on the reverse. Overall. Description: A fine full color example of Francis Lamb's 1676 map of Virginia. Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay. Oriented to the west, Lamb's map covers from Albemarle Sound to the Susquehanna River and from the Appellation Mountains to the Delaware Bay and New Jersey, inclusive of all of modern day Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Delaware Bay. The map notably includes the Chesapeake Bay's western watershed, luring potential colonists with the promise of large navigable rivers and rich fertile lands. The English text on the verso, drawn from Ogilby, further entices with descriptions of Maryland as'abounding with many fort of fruits and ... moreother commodities' and Virginia as'very wholesome and agreeable to English constitutions' Indigenous American Indian villages and lands throughout the region are also noted and distinguishable from European cities for the latter being depicted as churches. A fine and large decorative title cartouche of a baroque ethic appears in the upper right quadrant. A secondary cartouche bearing the royal armorial crest of King James II of England hovers over the distance scale in the opposite upper quadrant. Cartographically Lamb's map is considered by scholars to be the ninth and last derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of the same region. It is therefore of considerable significance. In 1673 Augustine Herman issued his own outstanding map of the Chesapeake and the surrounding colonies. Herman's map was a significant step forward in the cartography of the region and the first major deviation from the Smith map. Subsequent cartography, Lamb's included, struggled to reconcile Smith's established cartography with Hermann's more sophisticated treatment. This map, published just three years following Hermann's map- which exists in only four known exampl

Vooght's 1687 maritime map of the Virginia, Carolina, Georgia and Florida coasts. Oriented to the west(with north to the right) this map covers from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay southwards, along the eastern seaboard, as far as Cape Canaveral, Florida. Like most nautical charts, this map focuses on the coast line and offers limited inland data. The cartographer, C. J. Vooght, has based this map on various unpublished and unknown sources; however, he appears to reference the c. 1590 maps of John White ... moreand Jacques Le Moyne for place names in Virginia and Carolina, respectively. Spanish place names are used for several of the capes, no doubt referencing said'unknown' sources. The region between Cape Hatteras and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay features numerous depth soundings. As this map was issued most of this region was disputed between the colonial powers of Spain, entrenched in St. Augustine Florida, and the English who had been slowly moving into the Ablemarle Sound and Cape Fear River region from their colony in Virginia. Carolina received its official grant from the British Crown in 1663– the southward expansion was not only a territorial expansion but a move that positioned the British colonies to more actively trade with the lucrative West Indies colonies. The southernmost British settlement at the time was Charleston, which appears on the west bank of the Ashley River(here called by the Spanish name, Rio Grande) in both the main map and the inset in the upper right quadrant. There is an index map on the cover and inside the first page gives the explanation of everything concerned in this area. Also there is a descriptive text. Topographic map, structure sections, historical geology, and economic geology map. Shows some age along the edges and water spotting. No missing pages. It measures about 18 1/2" x 22" There are about 9 pages. The spine tape is gone. But pages are still stapeled together. We are also putting on a couple of additional maps at this time. The following item is a very nice CSA camp axe that was dug near the Widow Tapp Farm on the Wilderness Battlefield(private property) The Widow Tapp Farm was General Robert E. Lee's Headquarters during the battle. This camp axe was dug behind Confederate Lines very near to the farm. It is solid in all aspects and has been cleaned and coated for preservation. This specimen is as clean and complete as they get. It measures almost 7 inches in length. It would make a nice addition to a Civil War Camp display.

A very beautiful print that will frame up nicely! Size: The page measures 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. Condition: The folio sheet is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging and a centerfold as issued. A dark impression. Blank on reverse. There is a hint of a damp stain in the bottom center margin and some darkening around the edges, otherwise it is very clean and would frame up well. The pics are of the actual prints. Bordered map size is about 20" x 13.5" with margins sufficient to allow matting or framing-pictured below without the full margins to allow image to load a little quicker. Too big for my large scanner so scanned in two passes and then combined for the image below. A laser-printed facsimile of the copyright information as it appears in the atlas from which this original map was removed will be included. On a peel-off. Self-adhesive sheet.
