This is an extremely old map from 1865. It is not a reprint or a copy. But the original map from the 1865 publication of Sam Bowles book of Across the Continent. It is in very good condition for such an old map. Of course it has the typical fold lines of any map. And there is a tear on the right side of the map that goes into it about 3 inches, but no part is missing, so when you lay it down as you would to frame it, it is complete. The very outer edges are rough and have some discoloration in areas, but this is all outside the dark line edge of the map, so when framing or hanging, you will not see it at all, as it will be under matting or framing. The map will be shipped First class. In plastic covering, and between to pieces of foam-core board so that it cannot be bent at all during shipping. National Map of the American Republic 1845 Augustus Mitchell Wood Ends
Mitchells National Map of the American Republic of or United States of North America 1845 Augustus Mitchell Philadelphia Top& Bottom Wood Poles Great antique map for your collection. Made by that famous cartographer Augustus Mitchell. Recently picked this piece up at an estate sale. I think this was about the 3rd year that Mitchell had made this map available for purchase. Looks pretty good for a 168 year old map. Eh? Samuel Augustus Mitchell is considered one of the premier map makers in the United States and the cost of his product truly reflect that appreciation. Mitchell made this map from 1843 to 1850 in both a wall and folding pocket(only offered for a year or two) formats. So, this would be the 3rd edition of this map. Great hand coloring and details in this map. Compare the condition of this map to ones that rare map stores have ... moreavailable. The coloring and condition of this one appears superior to all that I was able to locate out there and there are only 4 of them. Other than this one that are still available to the public. Nothing like this map version that I could find on eBay. The map perimeter is squares that show further details of 32 cities and towns in the United States. There certainly is wear and tear to the map. Cracking from brittleness. You can see a large section that was torn and mended at the top out in the Mid-West. Appears to be some water spotting along the bottom edge of the map where the detailed squares are, but not into the map of the United States itself. One interesting mistake I found on the map is the location of Strausburg, PA. Should be on the east side of the Susquehanna River and then to the east of Lancaster. They have it on the west side of the river between York and Gettysburg. The map is 49.25" across. By 42" tall. Add a couple more inches for the boards that are attached on the top and bottom. It appears to me that this original map has been attached to a cotton fiber backer piece to help stabilize it at some time when it was expertly restored. That backer

To my knowledge and I've searched for three years this map has never come up to auction before it is a rare opportunity for a collector. The map being a folding would of came in a book, The photos show a picture the map will be shipped without the frame. The photos have been circled where a piece of the map has been lifted in its history near the Southern border of Texas and partially deposited to the right and also upon the back. Also note the four tack holes in all the corners. For a map of its age it is in remarkeable condition. The frame does not come with the map.
