Shows the whole state of California. Some of Oregon to the North and a lot of Nevada to the East. This is a very nice, vintage rare map that is large and would look great framed. The map measures 21 ½ inches x 13 ½ inches. The map has a very nice reddish frame drawn around the borders of the state. In very good condition especially for being 133 years old! Across the bottom of the map, the Parke route, which precipitated the Gadsden Purchase, is also noted. Colton identifies Fillmore City as the capital of the Utah Territory and Santa Fe as the capital of New Mexico. This map further identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical detail. It was engraved and printed by the Matthews-Northrup Works of Buffalo. NY. Major railroads are shown. The map is printed on medium weight paper. Blank on the reverse with the exception of area and population figures(by county) from the 1890 and 1900 Census. Los Angeles County had a population in 1890 of 101.000& in 1900 it was still only 170,000! This printing is NOT part of the encyclopedia text. To own any of these Business Atlas maps in the 1870's is to own a extremely rare item. The last one we saw in auction ran over $1400.00. And worldcat.org shows only one of these in the major libraries. The thin double lines show stage routes, wagon trails and other dirt transportation paths. This is truly a museum show piece.
