Description: A scarce 1846 wall map of the United States by Horace Thayer and Edward Ensign. This remarkable map covers the United Stated from Texas and the Upper Mississippi Valley eastward to the Atlantic and from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. Insets detail Oregon Territory and the newly admitted states of Florida and Texas. The map is surrounded by a decorative acanthus border framing miniature cartouches offering population and other details relative to each admitted state. The map is copyrighted to 1845. Though we have not been able to identify any examples from that year. The date under the title cartouche is 1846, suggesting this ... moreto be the second edition, updated to reflect the December 1845 admittance of Texas and Florida into the Union. The Texas inset in the lower left corner is notable for both its size and detail. The map presents Texas in an exceptionally ephemeral form reflecting the early Republic of Texas political geography. Here Texas extends westward off the map to include most of modern day New Mexico. Though not presented here, Texas at this time would also have included a long northern panhandle extending well into modern day Wyoming. The map offers an excellent county breakdown in eastern Texas with Austin, Galveston, San Antonio, and Houston, as well as a number of other early Texas cities, identified. The map sites the population of Texas around this time at a slight 140,000. The choice to not include the northern and western portions of Texas is suggestive of the Thomas Benton border reconfiguration plan which, though not adopted, would be formally presented to congress in 1850. The present map is an exceptionally beautiful example and the only we are aware of to bear the 1846 imprint. The presumed third edition, which would follow in 1847, is more common. Published in New York by Appleton& Co. Circa 1850, which was an American edition of an English publication by"H.C. Collons, 22 Paternoster Row, London" as stated in the bottom margin. In the bottom left margin in small prints states"Drawn& Engraved by John Dower, Pentonville, London. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. It is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet. Overall, these are very ... morefine maps on strong paper, blank on the reverse with original handcoloring as issued, impression is very strong and crisp as seen in the pics, with no centerfolds making it a very nice map for framing. The map shows a much different set of Western US boundaries with a large Northwest Territory, large Washington, Oregon and Utah Territories. Texas includes parts of Eastern New Mexico, Western Oklahoma and Colorado which only existed for a few years prior to the Compromise of 1850, when the Texas border with New Mexico was settled. The southwestern US border is the Gila River prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854. Size: The map image measures approximately 9 by 11 inches(23x28cm) on a 11 by 13" page(27x33cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good or better condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. Measures 30cm by 24cm. Map shows an early and abbreviated Texas. Stretching to the Rio Grande; a massive Mexico running far up the west side of the Rockies, all the way to the Oregon border. New Mexico snakes up the east side of the Rockies. Los Angeles not even identified on map, with features and settlements running from San Diego, Santa Catalina Island and then to Santa Barbara. 1839 map of The United States and Texas, original Mitchells
This is a lot of two maps. One titled the Map of the United States and Texas, a double page map and the map of North America a single page map. Both are by Mitchell, and are from a School and Family Geography book of 1839. These Map show the United States at a historic time in it's expansion. Mexico at one time had controlled the territory known as Texas. Until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. Texas would Join the United States in 1845 as the 28th state. This would then set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican War in 1846 The Mexican War would lead to the changes of Boundaries as would the later Gadsden Purchase. Alaska shows as Russian America on the smaller map. Alaska would change hands in the year 1867 by a treaty ratified by the U.S. Senate. Also in the year 1839 the Territories of ... moreOregon.
