Although this edition was published in 1844. The map names"Michigan Territory" as it existed prior to 1837 when it was admitted to the Union as the state of Michigan. West of Lake Michigan, what is now the US state of Wisconsin is named as"Huron or North West Territory" This area became a territorial possession of the United States in 1783 after the American Revolutionary War. However, the British remained in control until after the War of 1812, which finally established an American presence in the area. An influx of miners into the area led to tension with American Indian tribes. This resulted in the Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832 which led to the forced removal of American Indians from most parts of the state. Following these conflicts, Wisconsin Territory was organized in 1836. Continued white settlement led to statehood in 1848. Indian settlements, villages and tribes existing in 1833 are marked on the map as tipi(teepee) symbols, along with some mines and mineral deposits. The Indian boundary concluded in the second and third Treaties of Prairie du Chien of 1829, in which Native American Tribes ceded land in present day Wisconsin and Illinois, is marked on the map as the"Indian Boundary of 1829" Also marked on the map in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is the"Indian Boundary" resulting from the 1821 Treaty of Chicago and the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. Some moderate scattered foxing as typical, dampstain at top corner, but these do not detract from the interest or appeal of the map[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. Overall a nice impression of an interesting map which would warrant close inspection. Sheet measures c. 18 3/8" W x 15 1/8" H. Engraved area measures c. 15 1/2" W x 13" H. 33093] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Rare Vintage Large 1884 Map of Indian Territory Up for sale is a truly very nice Gram’s Atlas 1884 map of The Old West’s Indian Territory which is now modern day state of Oklahoma. The map was engraved based on data collected in 1880. George Gram is a noted engraver and map publisher. This is a very nice. Vintage rare map that is large and would look great framed. The map measures 13 ½ inches x 10 ½ inches. The map clearly indicates where the various Indian tribes lived at that time and include the Choctaw Nation. The majority of which is referred to as"BRITISH AMERICA, with smaller portions referred to as"CANADA WEST, and"CANADA EAST. Most of the western states appear oversized and distorted. As they were later divided to make additional smaller states. What we now know as Oklahoma is referred to as"INDIAN TERRITORY" on this map. O ver 50 native tribe names appear around the map. Mostly in the western states and territories. Oddly. The country Mexico ... moreis referred to by its regions only, and its country name is omitted from within its borders on this map. Section of Map Compiled in P. R. R. Office with additions designed to illustrate Lt. Warrens Report of Military Reconnaissance in the Dacota Country 1855. complied by Lt. Warren. T. E. Drawn by E. Freyhold. This map was published in the 1856 Senate Exdoc 76, 34th Congress, 1st Session. Map was engraved by P. S. Duval& Co. of Philadelphia which results in a sharp image. The folding map size is about 15 by 19 inches. Map is in very good condition(fine except for right edge) The right edge has some damage and a little tape repair on the reverse. Right edge cut close or removing the neat line. There is one round stain over the"P" and"A" in North Park in Colorado. There are no other tape repairs or noticeable tears. Bottom edge has a little browning outside of the neat line. Four corner fold points are in excellent shape, ... moreunusual for this map. This is one of Lt. Warren's great maps. The map is filled with Indian Tribe areas to include Ogalala Dacotas Shawnees. Otoes, Missouries, Pawnees, Omahas, Crows, Sansarcs Dacota, Minikanyes, Gros Ventres, Black Feet, Minetares, Assiniboins, Mandans, Ari Careen, Ihanktonwanna Dacotas, Unkpapa Dacotas, Sious, Isantie Dacotas, Ponkas, Brule Dacotas, Ohenonpa Dacotan, Pottawattamies, Isantie Dacotas, Maison du Chien, and Kickapoos. Natural features includes major rivers and lakes and is significantly note worthy for having dotted course where Lt. Warren did not have concrete information on the course. There is mountain detail only in southern Wyoming and Colorado. Many peaks. Hills or buttes are named thorughout the map. In original outline color, engraved by Pierre François Tardieu and printed more than 215 years ago. This map was published in Paris by Edme Mentelle and Pierre Gilles Chanlaire. 1798. It labels 14 states and identifies their capital cities, and it locates Indian tribes west of the Appalachians. The map is titled Carte Générale des États-Unis de l'Amérique Septentrionale. Renfermant aussi quelques Provinces Angloises adjacentes. The image area measures 43 x 32.5 cm[17" x 12-1/2" And longitude is measured from Paris and Ferro. Florida. Which was under Spanish rule when this map was printed, extends west to the Mississippi River. The boundaries of present-day Maine had not yet been settled, ... moreand its area is labled"Part of Massachusetts Bay. There is no Ohio or Kentucky. The Great Lakes are shown, although Lake Huron appears much larger than its actual size. The coverage area also includes the English territories of eastern Canada. Numerous forts are labeled. And named Indian tribes include the Sioux, Algonquin, Missouri, Illinois, Assiniboine, Osage, and Outagamie, as well the Eskimos of Labrador. This map was printed prior to the Louisiana Purchase, and a large area west of the Mississippi River is labeled"Louisiane. Most of the capitals in the list of states are different from those of today. The scans below give a closer look at some of the detail: Condition: This map is in very good condition. Although this edition was published in 1844. The map names"Michigan Territory" as it existed prior to 1837 when it was admitted to the Union as the state of Michigan. West of Lake Michigan, what is now the US state of Wisconsin is named as"Huron or North West Territory" This area became a territorial possession of the United States in 1783 after the American Revolutionary ... moreWar. However, the British remained in control until after the War of 1812, which finally established an American presence in the area. An influx of miners into the area led to tension with American Indian tribes. This resulted in the Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832 which led to the forced removal of American Indians from most parts of the state. Following these conflicts, Wisconsin Territory was organized in 1836. Continued white settlement led to statehood in 1848. Indian settlements, villages and tribes existing in 1833 are marked on the map as tipi(teepee) symbols, along with some mines and mineral deposits. The Indian boundary concluded in the second and third Treaties of Prairie du Chien of 1829, in which Native American Tribes ceded land in present day Wisconsin and Illinois, is marked on the map as the"Indian Boundary of 1829" Also marked on the map in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is the"Indian Boundary" resulting from the 1821 Treaty of Chicago and the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. I bought this map at an Antique Store near Pismo Beach California over 25 years ago. It is dated 1973 so it is 42 years old.it is a print of the authentic Indian tribes of the U.S! I've really enjoyed having it and exploring our families indian heritage! There is a slight discolor on the back of the map I took pictures I can only see it on the back and I took up close pictures of the whole map so you can see all the details of the piece! It looks old and would be perfect framed with a beautiful Matte as an accent piece! I just had it in a reg frame that works too! But it is a beautiful accent conversation piece!
