This is an extremely old map from 1865. It is not a reprint or a copy. But the original map from the 1865 publication of Sam Bowles book of Across the Continent. It is in very good condition for such an old map. Of course it has the typical fold lines of any map. And there is a tear on the right side of the map that goes into it about 3 inches, but no part is missing, so when you lay it down as you would to frame it, it is complete. The very outer edges are rough and have some discoloration in areas, but this is all outside the dark line edge of the map, so when framing or hanging, you will not see it at all, as it will be under matting or framing. The hand wash coloring is very good and the map is very clean for this map with the notations above. Map illustrates the understanding of the topography of the West just as some of the first military/topography explorations had been completed. An 1848 version of this map is also being offered at the same time. Map will be rolled in thick Mylar plastic and placed in a tube/box for shipping with the seller paying for insurance and tracking. States and areas shown in full or partial are: a greatly reduced Texas, Nebraska, Indian Ter. Iowa, Minnesota, California, Utah, New Mexico, and Oregon. Area covered includes Montana, Wyoming Oregon, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Utah, Nevada, California, New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. Map size is about 11 by 17 inches and richly colored. Map in good shape. It does not have the usual staining along the fold. Stains are 1) black ink spots in Nebraska. 2) small water stain in Oregon taking out a little of Champooing and the area right above it, 3) stain at the neat line near the Oregon coast, 4) stains in New Mexico and Utah, 5) smudges ... morein Indian Ter. and 6) four weak pencil lines through southern Nebraska and into Indian Ter. one erased? Some color fading in Minnesota. The stains and pencil lines have little affect on the map except the one in Oregon. The map has been in a matted frame and in shrink wrap for over 30 years and I do not want to remove it unless it is sold. There are probably dirty or smudges along the edges of the sheet. The hand wash coloring is very good and the map is very clean for this map with the notations above. Colorado is part of Utah. New Mexico and Nebraska. Wyoming part of Nebraska, Utah and Oregon. An 1847 version of this map is also being offered with the tall Texas stovepipe at the same time. Map will be removed from the matting and rolled in thick Mylar plastic and placed in a tube/box for shipping with the seller paying for insurance and tracking. If wanted to remain in the mat and shrink wrap I can do separate invoice adding $10.00 for shipping carton. Texas includes parts of Eastern New Mexico, Western Oklahoma and Colorado which only existed for a few years prior to the Compromise of 1850, when the Texas border with New Mexico was settled. The southwestern US border is the Gila River prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854. Size: The map image measures approximately 9 by 11 inches(23x28cm) on a 11 by 13" page(27x33cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good or better condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. I purchased this map from the Historical Society of Michigan sometime in Sept 1987. The postage label on the shipping tube shows it was shipped on Oct 1 87. What captured my attention was the map name. Attention to detail, colorization and overall presentation. The states presented were states familiar to me as I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. spent time in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan(transferred here in 1976) My idea was to find a rustic frame and period glass(1856) to compliment the map but never made time to complete. I have had this map out of the shipping tube at lest a dozen times so it is in roll up condition. There is a separate document included called Map of the Territories of Michigan and Ouisconsin by David Bosse who. Found this map in an old roll top desk with the latest item dated 1866. This map had been folded up at the bottom of the drawer with other maps and newspapers and is in pristine condition. It is bright and vibrant I put it in a frame so as to protect the paper It will be shipped without the frame so as to save on postage. It needs to be professionally framed this is a museum peice.

Original 1851 John Tallis United States and Territories Map, Hand-tinted Classic
Great example of the classic John Tallis& Company 1851 map of the United States. This is the only example I have seen of this map that was originally frame mounted and not removed from an old atlas. Never folded. Marked on border edges. John Tallis& Company, London& New York. Illustrations by J. Marchant& Engraved by J. Rogers. The Map Drawn& Engraved by J. Rapkin. Hard paper board is 15 7/8 X11 7/8. Printed surface is 13 1/2 X10 1/2 inches. Heavy paper board is 1/8 inch thick in good condition. Brown and red hand-tinting to lower engravings of"Buffalo Hunt" Penn's Treaty with the Indians" and"Washington's Monument. Printed within three years of the addition of Texas to the United States. The maps borders show a wild frontier area of Old Mexico west of the Rio Grande, no Kansas yet but the Western ... moreTerritory, and Missouri and Nebraska Territory all the way north to Canada. Fort Union and Fort Mandan in the earlier Fur trappers north country, Fort Laramie and Fort Saint Vrain in the western plains, and Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River near the Mexico border were about the only U.S. outposts settled at the time. It is from The World in Minature or Diamond Atlas of Every Nation. Published in New Orleans by William Stuart. 1861. The maps in this atlas were originally designed and published by Sydney Morse(brother of Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph) and Samuel Gaston in Morse and Gaston's Diamond Atlas. William Stuart bought the rights from them and republished most all the originals maps in this edition. Which includes reference to the original Diamond Atlas in the title. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, ... morematted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pic. Overall, a nice antique miniature map that would frame up nicely! It is a very interesting map refelecting the territory border changes occurring between 1857-1861 showing a very short lived Oregon Territory in what is now Idaho and an elongated Washington Territory, a large Nebraska Territory, large Utah, horitzonal New Mexico over Arizona and a rare early Colorado Territory at the time of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Size: The map image measures approximately 6 by 10 inches(15x26cm) on a 7 by 11 1/2" 18x29cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. It was originally in two halves that have now been joined with archival materials. Other than a couple of minor light handling smudges in the margins. It is very clean and would frame up nicely. Antique 1854 map of North America exhibiting the United States and Territories. The Canadas, Mexico, Central America and the West India Islands. This 62" x 57" map, that is mounted on a canvas backing, is good unrestored condition with the normal wear and dirt from age, some canvas and map paper missing on the top and the holes and brown spots toward the bottom. It was published by Jacob Monk, Baltimore, Md. and engraved and printed by A. Hoen& Co. Lithographers& Engravers, Baltimore.
