It seems that since the first Nichols set foot into the New World. They've been producing fine quality chairs and passing on that skill to the next generation. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactory in Westminster, Massachusetts, which was worked by bewhiskered Nichols too numerous to mention. As the country grew, the Nichols' chair business grew, too. By 1857. It was already an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Massachusetts to gain easier access to the railway. The second of two fires leveled the plant, but adversity was turned into opportunity. An updated brick factory was opened in 1907 by Charles Nichols, with his new partner Reuben Stone, under the name Nichols& Stone. Having survived these natural disasters. Nichols& Stone continued to expand. By the 1930s, Edmund L. Nichols and Albert Stone had taken the helm. Responding to consumer preferences at the time, they pioneered in merchandising by specializing in Windsor chairs and Boston rockers, building the brand awareness still enjoyed today.

I would guess, to the 1920s-40s period but it could be older. The chair is solidly constructed and in very good condition with no damage or repairs evident. The paint and striping are original. There are worn traces of old stenciling on the top rail. The paint on the arms and top rail shown nice wear indicative of age. Also, the unpainted underside of the chair seat is nicely oxidized which can be another indication of age. The chair is 20 1/2 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches wide. Vintage Pair Hitchcock Style Chairs In Maple Nichols and Stone Unsigned V. G.
Listing this evening great pair of Hitchcock style chairs in pretty great condition. The chairs are unsigned but I am 99% sure that they were manufactured by Nichols and Stone. A quality Gardner Massachusetts furniture maker(Gardner was known as the chair capitol of the world back in the 1900's) The chairs are 35" tall with a seat height of 18" The seat is 17 1/2" wide at the front and the seats are 15" deep. They are solid maple in construction and very strong. The turnings are excellent. The only issue that I could see was a little damage to the rush/fiber on one of the seats(pic#5) I believe the rush/fiber to be original as well and in very good condition. The chairs appear to have been appreciated by and taken care of very well by the owners. Due to the size these chairs they will not be able to be shipped USPS ... moreat a reasonable cost. Local pickup is the least expensive option but chairs can be carefully packed up and shipped to the Greyhound station nearest you for $65.00 or less(Greyhound does not deliver so you would have to pick the chairs up at the station) I've shipped many chairs and other pieces of furniture through Greyhound and have never had a problem. This is a set of 6 matching Hitchcock style country farm chairs with caned seats. They have the original painted black finish with gold accent painted trim along the sides. Edges of seats and backs. The backs have a curved back and a curved central cross slat below, turned ringed front legs, ringed stretchers across the front, and 2 stretchers on each side. They have all been recaned and are tight. With no sagging or breaks. The chairs show normal wear appropriate to their age- paint wear. Scratches and one chair has a minor crack across the back slat that was repaired many years ago. It is barely noticeable and can only be seen on close inspection. Antique Hitchcock Style Painted Chair Hand Caned Seat
A simple country style Hitchcock chair. The paint has worn off the back splats but is still present on the front spreader. The caning is in excellent condition. Measurements: Back height 33" Front seat ht. 18" Depth 16" Width 13" The chair is fastened together with dowels and maybe glue. No nails are visible so they probably were not used in making the chair. I'm estimating the age and the era.
