Probably c. 1880-1910, France Item# 120012WIU03 This ... moreis a remarkable and precise work. A heavily and tastefully carved Louis XV Wingback Antique Arm Chair of the Rococo Revival period. This is a piece that was built to last with strong and heavy construction throughout. The crest is an ornate and complicated carving of flowing ribbon tied in a double-bow and interlaced with flowers that sprout over and along the frame, likewise carved carefully with a large twisted rope molding lined by a small twisted rope border. The arms flow down into curved handholds, the arm supports terminating in the frame with acanthus leaves sprouting up along the edges. These arms flank a deep and very comfortable down upholstered cushion, thick and very supportive, complimenting the overall cant of the chair- by leaning just slightly backwards. This is a simply wonderful chair to rest and lounge in. The apron is an intense display of flowers along a vine, acanthus leaves sprouting from beneath the cushion to peak out over the edge. The chair rests over cabriole front legs with intense multi-dimension floral carvings along the knees, flowing into scrolled french toes. Crafted in the Louis XVI taste during the first quarter of the 20th Century is a classic example of the very successful design. Of diminutive proportions. It is more of an oversized bergere arm chair than a true loveseat. The width ideal for lounging casually with a good book in a comfortable setting. The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve ... moreof the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square. Crisp carved details bring elegance to specific elements of this fine sofa: the acanthus carved arm supports or reeded and curled handholds. The form is predominantly round, the arms wrapping around the frame to create a cocoon around the seated, the entire chair resting over carefully carved tapered and fluted legs, the top embellished with a ring of acanthus carving. The wood appears to be walnut, and I would guess that it dates to the early part of the 20th century. We are pleased to offer this EXCEPTIONAL pair of antique. Early 1900s, French Victorian chairs! These STUNNING chairs feature ornately carved Rosewood frames and beautiful fabric with extensive nailhead trim. The chairs feature exaggerated lines which give them a gorgeous profile. The backs are curved, in Louis XIV style, and have an hourglass appearance from the front and back views. The seats are extremely wide with lovely contoured fronts. The chairs are armless but the wooden frames extend downward in such a manner as to give them the appearance of having small, petite arm rests. The carving of the wood is lovely and features leaves and cherries on the top center frames. Small, French crosses are notched into the frames on each side of the leaf and cherry design. Carved acanthus leaves on the upper sides of the frames give the chairs ... morea subtle, winged" look. The front legs are cabriole with the leaf and cherry carving repeated. The back legs are straight with a subtle curved line. The chairs have GORGEOUS fabric. Though probably not original, it is quite nice and is expertly finished. The fabric is quite interesting and combines floral patterns with large paisley feathers and a beautiful, geometric lantern design. The fabric is quite colorful with hues of cream, tan, blue, green, burgundy and gold. The fabric is accented with extensive nailhead trim on both the front and back. The trim is an antique gold color and is quite striking. The chairs have are overstuffed with ample cushioning. This extends the fabric sections approximately 4" from the frames. The chairs are in very good condition. They are quite sturdy. As with most antique chairs of this period. They are not terribly heavy. There are a few small scuffs on the wood(as would be expected) which can be resolved with a simple touch up. There is nothing severe or distracting and the chairs look extremely nice. Old French Bergere Gilt Gesso Chair - Heavy Wood Frame
We are pleased to offer this old French Bergere gilt gesso chair. We are unsure of its age but it is most likely 1930 or earlier. There are numerous sections where the gilt gesso is chipped. The upholstery is most likely not original. it is very clean but faded and in usable condition. The back of the chair shows brush marks indicating that it may have been touched up at some point. This is a stunning antique(1930s) French Bergere chair(pair available) The chairs have a barrel design which is exquisite and is punctuated with the intricate wood frame and fabric combination. The chairs have a flared shape which is particularly pronounced from the back profile. They are generous in size with abundant, original hair fiber stuffing/padding. They are lightly tufted, on the front side of the backs, in a geometric pattern. The wood frames are fluted on the backs and smooth on the remainder of the frame. The chairs retain the original and BEAUTIFUL fabric. It features a floral and neoclassical pattern. The fabric is a light, golden cream with darker gold, brown with a touch of red. The chairs are in exceptionally nice condition for their age. The frames are sturdy and the chairs are very comfortable and have generous seats. These chairs are in simply beautiful condition the wood is in wonderful shape and they have been well cared for. We recently remodeled and no longer have space for these lovely chairs. I had always intended to have these chairs covered in 100% leather but never got round to it. They look lovely the way they are and were perfect for our needs.
