Up for auction is this set of two antique Japanese whistling sake cups. They appear to be quite old and not perfect. And each has a rim chip(please see close-ups) There is a scene painted inside with moriage and gold paint, the outside design is a glazed hand painted design. One has more wear inside than the other. They are each signed on the bottom. Other than the rim chips there are no cracks or crazing. These measure about 2 1/8" in diameter and 1 1/4" tall. happy bidding.

JAPANESE KUTANI PORCELAIN WHISTLING BIRD SAKE SET
Japanese Kutani Porcelain“Whistling Bird” Sake Set with a Tokkuri and six Cups that were probably made around the middle of the 20th Century or a little after. It has an Overglaze Red"Kutani" Seal Mark on the Bottom of the Tokkuri and the Cups are Unmarked. It is called a“Whistling Bird” Sake Set because the Tokkuri has a little Gilded Bird on Top that appears to be making a Whistling Sound whenever liquid is poured from it. Actually the sound is emitted from a tiny hole next to the Bird. The six-sided Tokkuri stands 6 inches high and measures 2 ¼ inches across from corner to corner and 2 inches across from side to side. And the Cups stand 1 ¼ inches high and measure a little more than 1 1/2 inches in diameter. This trio of Japanese ceramic sake cups is probably 50-75 years old. At the tails of the gold birds are the mouths of whistles. So that when a sip of sake is taken, a whistling"peep" sound is emitted from the base. The writing on the insides says a man's name and that they are in commemoration of something, although we can't figure out what. The writing on the bases appears to be the name and address of a sake maker. There is some general wear. With some noticeable wearing-away of the gold leaf, but there are no chips, cracks, or any other significant structural damage. The whistles of all three function properly. Antique, Vintage Kutani Marked Thin Porcelain Whistling Sake Cups Hand Painted
For your consideration we are offering these beautifully detailed and unique porcelain whistling sake cups. The cups are fine porcelain china with a detailed painted scene with Mt. Fuji. Water village and flowering trees and foliage. The little blossoms on the tree are moriage dots. These cups are so tiny with such wonderful detail. These cups are very unique they are whistling sake cups. There is a porcelain chimney/tube which runs down the side on the outside of the cup into the base with a hole in center. These are quite unusual and beautiful. There are 6 cups 2 have a chip on the top rim, please see photos for details. As far as I could see those are the only major chips. The rest of the cups are in good condition. There is some wear of the gold gilt trim on some of the cups. The bottoms of the cups are marked in red with Kutani and with ... more2 calligraphy characters. On some of the cups depending on how the stamp was placed some of these marks or letters are not complete because of the hole in the bottom for the whistling component. I am not sure of the age of these wonderful little cups. These cups measure approximately 2 3/16” across and they measure approximately 1 ¼” tall. This Japanese ceramic sake cup is probably 40 or so years old. The bulge on the outside is the mouth of a whistle. So that when a sip of sake is taken, a whistling"peep" sound is emitted from the base. The writing on one side says"Kiyomizu-dera no Kei" View of Kiyomizu Temple" while on another side is a representation of that temple's famous cliff platform. Kiyomizu-dera is a very famous Buddhist temple in Kyoto. There is some general wear. Japanese vintage sake cup; whistling cup 1940-50s
Unique vintage Japanese sake cup with hole at top which leads to a hole in the bottom of the cup. Essentially. This becomes a whistle when you suck in at the top on the hole. The idea was that you were signaling to the waitress when your cup was empty and you needed more. About 2 1/4" in diameter. No cracks or chips. Striking blue flower design on outside of cup. These were made in the late 40s to mid 50s along with matching sake bottles with birds on top that also whistled when poured. They were hard to find back when I searched the outdoor antique markets around Tokyo when stationed there in 2001-04. Free shipping via USPS. Thanks!
