After the discovery of potter’s clay at amine near kutani village.Saijiro Goto was sent to Arita in Kyushu district to master ceramics and brought back the techniques. Each bowl or cup with flowers of a month(one missing) and no 2 similar including- japanese maple, plum, sakura(cherry blossom) mums, wisteria, peonies, a landscape. Each with gilt rim and gilt banding at the base, the footring marked with a black oblong cartouche and signed SENZAN. Vintage Japanese Somayaki Tea Cup Saucer Ochoko Sake Cup Fly Horse Aloha Up for auction is a large somayaki tea cup. Somayaki is characterized by the crackling glaze called hibiyaki. It is also know for its double walled construction. The inner and outer pieces and made separately and let to dry. The inner piece is then joined to the outer piece and then fired. This design keeps the liquid inside hot while the outer surface says cool to the touch. Most also have a"hashiri-uma" or galloping horse motif painted in gold. This motif is said to have been requested by a feudal lord in the mid 1600s to show pride in the region's ability to bred and train quality horses. There are also cut-out designs that some say look like cherry blossom petals but others say they are the inprint of the horse's hooves. I like the cherry blossom ... moretheory. Up for auction is a vintage somayaki tea/coffe cup with a saucer plus an ochoko sake cup. Both have the hibiyaki crackling glaze. Only the sake cup has the golden horse. Have a great drink of sake followed by a great hot tea. What a great combination. Somayaki is made in Fukushima. These were made before the great earthquake. These are beautiful! Hand painted flowers and gold rim. Possibly 18k, 22k, 24k, did not want to damage by doing a scratch test. Irridecent lustre on back of each piece, and signed by artist, stamped Japan. Cannot get a good close-up of signature, sorry, last letter is a"g or s" for Youmans or Youmang, same signature on all, last letter just varies slightly. Two of cups show light wear on flowers, see last picture. No chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. In what little research I came across. They seem to be" horseback style sake cups" but cannot say for sure. Exquisite Satsuma Sake / Tea / Sauce / Dip Bowls Dish Set of Four
Four Japanese satsuma sake or tea cups measure 15/16" tall and each one depicts different designs including maple leaves. Wisteria, Mt Fuji? and one with flowers that I'm not familiar with. The sides are decorated with butterflies. All the designs have lots of gold detailing that does not show up well in photos because I had to use a flash. Three of the cups are marked the same and one cup is marked Kutani. It's a satsuma cup with a kutani design. All are in great condition. These were purchased at an estate liquidation in rural north Florida about 28 years ago. The individual was well known in the community as a traveler. Including China in his early years. We are not experts in this area, and will try to describe to best of our ability. Chop mark signatures on bottom of all. China" in gold over the chops, missing on several. Gilt on rims and gilt interior decoration is mostly gone. Lotus panels coming from bottom to lower edge of side. 4 cups have black decoration on side, 1 does not. RARE OLDER JAPANESE CORALENE BEADED PORCELAIN TEA SAKE CUP FEMALE LITHOPANE
Note: Most items are vintage or antique and were found at estate sales. Local auctions or flea markets. Up for auction is an early 20th century Japanese porcelain sake or tea cup. It is handpainted with the design of a ship on water passing through an opening between two mountains. There's relief glass beaded accents known as coralene adorning the cup. The extra rarity is the lithopane female portrait seen when holding the cup to a light source. Similar to geisha lithopanes. Japanese coralene is ceramics decorated with raised beads or dots. This style was first made in the 19th century. Coralene designs include coral branches. Seaweed, daisies, birds and fishes. Later wares made to imitate coralene had dots of enamel. Another type of coralene is made with glass beads on glass containers. The cup is artist signed and I believe the words ... moretell a story about the motif. This is one of three old Japanese porcelain pieces I am offering this week. Postage will be combined/discounted for multiple winning auctions. There are no chips or discoloration. VINTAGE SAKE CUPS ENCASED IN AN OLD WOODEN CRATE We came across this set of earthenware sake cups quite by accident. I found the old wooden box printed with Japanese caligraphy. And when I opened the box, I found these amazing hand-painted cups. We carefully unpacked them to discover that each cup features a picture in a series illustrating a story. We have researched these cups and can find NOTHING like them. MYSTERIOUS AND DEFINITELY RARE! Each cup measures approximately 3 1/4" tall and are approximately 2" in diameter. They are housed in a small wooden crate measuring 13 1/2" long. 3 7/8" wide and 2 7/8" tall. The top of the box has Japanese writing as well as some sort of stamp. This is a rare vintage tea cup(may also be used for sake) from Japan. It is one that is intended to be used in tea ceremony and comes with a tiny hardbound book about Buddhist thought. The set is complete as it would have been had it been purchased upon it's manufacture. All items come bundled in their wooden box with beautiful kanji written down the side and a delicate fabric that can be tied into a bow to enclose the contents. These types of traditional packages were designed specifically to be able to tie a bow/loose knot that would represent a concept. I do not know the exact date of the piece. The family that it was received from informed me that it is definitely from between 1935-1965 as this is when the grandfather owned it originally. The cup itself is gorgeous with a luster and shine. Item up for auction These are 4 beautiful vintage Japanese cups that I believe are for sake. The cups have an inner cup and outer cup where there are heart cut outs that show the exterior of the inner cup. The cups have a crackle finish. Have painted gilt trim around the heart cut outs, the cup rims and the interior bottom design. All have a clear glaze finish. The cups are about 3" across x 3" high. There are brown speckles on the outside and inside of the cups and with a brown ring around the top of each cup. Cups stand about 2.5 inches tall; diameter is 3 inches; circumference is almost 10 inches. Excellent condition- no chips. Cracks or scratches.
