Beautiful near perfect porcelain Satsuma cup. The pattern is Mother/Son according to the Geisha Girl Encyclopedia. The rim and face of the cup are in perfect condition with no chips or wear. The gold detail is spectacular. Signed. In Japanese, in gold over red on the bottom. There is a small chip-let in the foot of the cup that I didn't notice until I was investigating VERY closely. There is also a small hairline crack that does not go through and is also in the foot of the cup. These two small imperfections are photographed in the last photo. I purchased this intricately glazed hand painted imari tea cup at a dealer only antique auction just outside of Kyoto. It came from an estate which had pieces dating over 300 years back. This is an aka imari( multicolored) ceramic tea cup which dates to the mid Meiji era(c. 1890) The outside is designed with multi color glazed work with hand painted details of flowers. Melons, and a butterfly. Around the lower and inner rim there is a lattice pattern in cobalt blue. This style tea cup was commonly used in the late Edo to mid Meiji Eras(c. 1850- 1890) Being all hand painted it is most likely from the early to mid Meiji Era as by 1900 the use of transfer print became the vogue. This auction is for a miniature porcelain tea cup and saucer that appears to be stamped"911" This looks to be a Japanese set. But without knowing the maker, I can't be sure. This set is nicely decorated with pink lustre color and a white center. The edges are trimmed in gold, as is the handle of the tea cup. The set does have very minor loss to some of the gold gilting and a very small chip on the inside rim and an aged crack on the inside of the cup. Neither of these can be seen from the outside of the cup. The cup does not have any other damage and the plate is in excellent condition. Egg shell porcelain is a very fine thin bone china that is translucent. This lovely tea set features a Geisha girl on a path in front of a house and flowers throughout a plaid design surrounded by early 1900's 8-ray Japanese Imperial Flags. This little set definitely dates back to pre WWII. 1910's-1930' The Asian scene has been hand painted in very rich multi-color features and accented with gold. All four pieces are in very good condition with an exception of one tiny chip on the inside rim of one tea cup and a hairline crazing crack on the inside of the other one. The cup(without the handle is 8.7 cm(3 1/2” The condition of the cup& saucer is very good– No chips, cracks, or restoration. In my opinion, the cup dates to the late Edo or Meiji period, circa 1850-1900. Hisatomi Yojibei Masatsune with his oldest son. Masayasu(1812- 1878) operated the foreign trade of the porcelain ware in the late Edo period. In 1842 the family was officially licensed by Saga Han. Nabeshima Naomasa(1815- 1871) who granted the family a trade name, Zoshuntei. Finely potted cylindrical form, with a curved base and a lightly curved rim, on a circular foot. The sides are decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, beneath a transparent glaze, the white reserve areas are decorated in overglaze green and gilt to depict prunus flowers. The edge of the foot has a double ring mark, and the underside is marked in underglaze blue with a two character makers mark below a Mount Fuji device. This tea cup and saucer are true artistry. Look at the last two photos to see the detail in the hand-painted irises. The addition of gold/gilt is VERY generous and was carefully applied amongst the detailed painting of the leaves and flowers. The paint is raised to the touch. Particularly for the large Japanese Iris blooms. A single butterfly is hidden among the blooms on both the cup and saucer This is truly an outstanding set. They were in a collection that was carefully used for display& decorative purposes. CONDITION: The cup has no chips. Cracks or crazing. The cup handle has two small spots where the gold has worn off. one is 1/16" x 1/8" and the other 1/16" x 1/16" There seems to be another 1/8" spot on the cup where the paint has worn off. It is difficult to see unless you use magnification. The plate ... morehas a 1/16" chip on the right lobe. It is the same color as the gold but I could feel the chip. Again it is hard to see. I can't tell if was chipped before the plate was painted or chipped after and gold added to obscure the chip. The plate might have some minor paint loss but again it is difficult to determine what is an artistic brush stroke and what has worn off even with magnification. Satsuma earthenware is somewhere between porcelain and pottery. This is handpainted with thick enamels and gold leaf. Often in elaborate decoration& themes directly from the Japanese ethos of legends, court life& artistic values. Crackles are a very important characterists of Satsuma wares during early and middle satsuma periods. In fact the ceramists were careful not to hide or cover up all the entire crackle ground because the crackle enhances by producing a play of light on the surface. These were decorated with figures of immortals dressed in dark robes with guilded detail and a large white headed dragon. The cup handle is also a dragon head. The detailsof the hand painted faces are outstanding. The marks: The cross with the circle is Shimazu Mon or the family crest of the clan that ruled Satsuma Han. This is a rare vintage tea cup(may also be used for sake) from Japan. It is one that is intended to be used in tea ceremony and comes with a tiny hardbound book about Buddhist thought. The set is complete as it would have been had it been purchased upon it's manufacture. All items come bundled in their wooden box with beautiful kanji written down the side and a delicate fabric that can be tied into a bow to enclose the contents. These types of traditional packages were designed specifically to be able to tie a bow/loose knot that would represent a concept. I do not know the exact date of the piece. The family that it was received from informed me that it is definitely from between 1935-1965 as this is when the grandfather owned it originally. The cup itself is gorgeous with a luster and shine. This is an antique Japanese sake or tea cup. It has a beautiful. It measures about 2.5" tall by 2.75" wide and it is in excellent vintage condition. Very little wear. No chips or cracks. Gold metallic accents over hand painted blue and orange decorations of persimmon fruit. Signed in Japanese on the bottom. I was told that it is circa 1920s.
