Each cup with three flowers enclosed in a large'noshi' on the outside. Diaper inner border interupted by three flower cartouches. Stylized flower in the well. This is a rare set and to find 10 in such good condition is exceptional! Measures approx. 8.5 cm across and 7 cm high. Weight for one cup 154gr. Dates to c1770-90. Condition is very good. Vintage Set of 8 Japanese Soba Cups, Soup Cup, Noodle Cup, Soba-Choko
DESCRIPTION This set of 8 cups are for soba soup called Soba-Choko. They are typical blue and white with hand painted designs. Not printed, so each design is one of a kind. These pieces came from my uncles estate and were acquired while he lived in Japan during the late 50's, early 60's. They measure approximately 3 3/8" across the top in diameter, and stand 2 3/4" tall. The top edges have a scalloped rather than flat edge. One cup has a chip on the bottom rim which must have been done at the factory since it has glaze covering it. In my opionion it is of no consequence since there is no impact to its usefulness, nor is it obvious when the cup is upright. One cup does have a hair line crack on the outside(although the crack is not apparent on the inside) see photo. The cups do have minor imperfections(small ticks) where ... morethe glaze did not completely cover the clay during the firing process, typical of this old style historic ceramic. Overall this is a beautiful set in nice condition for its age and use. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. Sweet pair of Japanese Meiji-era Inban transfer ware blue and white soba choko cups. This type of Inban work was popular in the second half of the 19th century through about 1920. These date from sometime in that period. They're in great condition. Very clean, with no chips or cracks, though they have some minor glaze flaws typical of the firing conditions of this kind of work(see pictures 8 and 9) Each is in a different transfer ware pattern. Dating late 18th to early 19th century this is a charming Arita/ Imari porcelain cup that was used for dipping soba noodles and probably other purposes. Much as they are still used today in Japan.
