This extremely fine example does not disappoint with over 20 coats of refined Japanese"urushi" lacquer over a hand-turned, cryptomeria wood cup that is as light as a feather and weighs only 12 grams or.4 ounces! This tiny Sake cup measures approximately 3.5 inches in diameter x 1.25 inches ... moretall. The Gold art work on the cup's inner surface is that of the Japanese military. This amazing art work is done with the finest of brushes and the raised gold lacquer design(called"Makie" is beautifully applied over the crimson color of the Sake cup and also to the edge of the cup's rim and base. This Sake Cup is in very good condition with no cracks or splits of any kind in the wood or lacquer. It does have some very minor wear to the edges with two tiny chips on the rim; but for being over 120 years old. It is in truly remarkable condition and displays very well. Cultural Note: By the way. My Japanese friends tell me that the word"Sake" is actually pronounced"Sa-ke" like the"ke" in the word"kettle) and not"Sa-key" like the English word"key. And the word is pronounced with equal emphasis on both syllables, Sa-ke. So, I've been mispronouncing it for over 45 years! Sorry. Please look carefully at the 4x macro photos as they are part of the description. The white spots are from the lights I used to illuminate the cup so as to show the wonderful detail of this work of art. What a great Wedding or special Bi

A wonderful pairing of an antique Chinese display stand. Of unusual form with a vintage Japanese red lacquer lidded sake cup with hand-painted gold crane design. Both are in excellent condition. The stand. In shades of rich'Imperial' red and dark mahogany brown, with a stunning patina, measures 12" x 8" x 4" 30 x 20 x 10 cm. The front face includes scroll forms on the top end of the vertical legs. Note also the delicate carving as viewed from the sides and the up-turned ends. Originally purchased at an antique shop in West Vancouver. B.C. I used it for many years to display a collection of netsukes but am slowly dissipating this collection amongst family and friends. Have paired this stand with a fine vintage/possibly antique Japanese red lacquer sake cup with lid. Measures 4.25" 11 cm in diameter. In wonderful ... morecondition. No chips. Cracks or crazing. Hand painted gold design of floral forms, fan, large pots and bamboo in the lower bowl and an exquisite scene of 7 cranes in a pine forest above a waterfall in the inside of the lid.
