The cup is glazed on the inside and unglazed ... moreon the outside, with an embossed allover pattern, the saucer is unglazed. The base of the cup has a lotus pod embossed in the center, and the saucer has a spiral stem and is shaped like a lotus leaf. There are no marks, they were probably part of a set made circa 1900-1920 for the export market. The cup measures 2 3/8" in height and 3" in diameter. The saucer measures 5" in diameter. It is decorated with a gold background and elaborate Moriage floral decoration. The floral designs are like little flowers with white enameling for petals. The centers of the flowers are painted gold with miniature gold dots applied on top. There are leaves that have a rust color to them and they are outlined with a gold stenciling effect. The rims and handle are also done in gold. The detail is absolutely incredible and it is hard to imagine the time and talent needed to produce these pieces. Beautiful near perfect porcelain Satsuma cup. The pattern is Mother/Son according to the Geisha Girl Encyclopedia. The rim and face of the cup are in perfect condition with no chips or wear. The gold detail is spectacular. Signed. In Japanese, in gold over red on the bottom. There is a small chip-let in the foot of the cup that I didn't notice until I was investigating VERY closely. Antique Japanese Hododa Satsuma Meija Period (1868-1912) Tea cup & (2) Saucers
Satsuma earthenware is somewhere between porcelain and pottery. This is handpainted with thick enamels and gold leaf. Often in elaborate decoration& themes directly from the Japanese ethos of legends, court life& artistic values. Crackles are a very important characterists of Satsuma wares during early and middle satsuma periods. In fact the ceramists were careful not to hide or cover up all the entire crackle ground because the crackle enhances by producing a play of light on the surface. These were decorated with figures of immortals dressed in dark robes with guilded detail and a large white headed dragon. The cup handle is also a dragon head. The detailsof the hand painted faces are outstanding. The marks: The cross with the circle is Shimazu Mon or the family crest of the clan that ruled Satsuma Han. Unusual Signed Antique Japanese Daruma Art Pottery Sake Cup Set of 2 Wonderful and unusual set of two signed Japanese Daruma art pottery sake cups. One cup is in excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or repairs. The other cup has a very, very tiny shallow approx. 1/16" glaze flake at the outer edge. The cups are beautifully hand painted with a Zen like picture of Daruma and are signed inside the cups. They are approx. 2" in diameter and approx 1 1/4" high. The outside has a lovely impressed basket weave flower design within the pottery. The pottery looks like earthenware. Outstanding additions to a collection.

The cup is in excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or repairs and the enamel and gold are still in excellent condition. There is no saucer and this is the way I found it. The hand painted detail work in this cup is so fine and very skillfully hand painted. There are extremely finely and extraordinary detailed scenes of a procession around the cup. The border designs are also very finely hand painted and are slightly raised. The background has very fine gold dots around the procession. The cup is signed on the bottom. It is 2 1/2" in diameter and 1 1/8" tall. The pictures don't capture the fine quality of this piece. An outstanding addition to a collection.

In 1677, Tokuro was awarded the title Taizan(帯山) lit. belt mountain. Another word for the kanji 帯is obi, and Taizan named his business Obiya(帯屋) means belt store. In 1711, he was granted permission to build a kiln in Awataguchi Higashicho. At Awata, he developed glazes and decorating styles for which he became famous. He marked his pottery 帯山, Taizan. From 1716-1736. His son Yohei(与兵衛) succeeded his father and took the name Taizan. He assumed the pottery business Obiya and marked his wares帯山, Taizan. He developed a rich red pigment made from iron sulphate, and improved the technical skill of Awata pottery-making. He was the first Taizan Yohei, and successive generations took the name Taizan Yohei. The next Taizan Yohei 3rd was active around 1752. And famous for developing a rich decorative blue enamel called Mazarine. Sometimes mazarine was used as body glaze and decorated with gold designs. Here is an Absolutely Beautiful Antique Japanese Satsuma Cup& Saucer The Set features an all over depiction of Immortals/Gods with a White Moriage Dragon The cup& saucer are made of a yellowish pottery/earthenware and have a fine crackled glaze. Both typical with authentic Satsuma. They feature a highly detailed scene of five seated male Japanese warriors/gods and a woman with a White Moriage Dragon intertwined between them. The inside of the cup is also painted with an Immortal/god. The Artistry is Inticately Detailed with Colors of Gold, Rust, Black, and White amist a Heavy Gold Gilding all over The Cup& Saucer have a Very Thick and Heavy Quality Feeling when held. Exquisite Japanese Satsuma Sake Cup, Signed, Shimazu, Late Meiji
During Japan's Meiji Period(1868-1912) That nation's craftsmen specializing in the making of Satsuma achieved an unprecedented level of excellence in the creation of that ware. This remarkable sake cup, dating from around 1910, illustrates the almost incredible level of detail these craftsmen could produce on a small ceramic object. The cup has a variety of beautifully rendered scenes around its body(including a slightly saucy image of a woman! and even has a very well painted floral arrangement in the bottom of the cup. The cup is signed on its base with a Shimazu cross along with additional Japanese characters within a square red and gold seal which I have been unable to decipher. Measuring a mere 2 1/4 inches high. The cup is 2 inches across its top and 1 1/4 inches at its foot. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks ... moreor repairs, and virtually no rubbing to the gilding. Satsuma of this quality is becoming much more difficult to find. And we are offering this superb example with a low opening bid and with no reserve.
