This is WW2 vintage(c. 1930's) hand thrown porcelain Japanese sakazuki(sake cup) with a dedication to a small shrine in the village of Jinmei on the inside of the cup(see picture 7) The outside of the cup has a raised chrysanthemum petal design all the way around. This cup has been fired at a high temperature for lasting strength and durability. It has stood the test of time for almost a century and will surely last another 100 years. Having been in storage for nearly a century inside a Japanese family warehouse. This sake cup remains in excellent condition. This trio of Japanese ceramic sake cups is probably 50-75 years old. At the tails of the gold birds are the mouths of whistles. So that when a sip of sake is taken, a whistling"peep" sound is emitted from the base. The writing on the insides says a man's name and that they are in commemoration of something, although we can't figure out what. The writing on the bases appears to be the name and address of a sake maker. There is some general wear. With some noticeable wearing-away of the gold leaf, but there are no chips, cracks, or any other significant structural damage. The whistles of all three function properly. ANTIQUE JAPANESE CERAMIC IMARI SAKAZUKI SAKE CUP CHINESE IMMORTALS UNDER PINE
This is an imari ceramic sake cup. Or sakazuki. It dates to the late Meiji era(c. 1900-1910) and is an appropriate size for a serving of Japanese sake. It depicts scenery of five of the Seven Lucky Gods under pine trees along the outside of the cup. Along the inner rim is a geometric design. The artwork was done through a combination of hand painted and transfer print technique. It measures 2" across by 1 7/8" tall(5 x 4.8 cm) Having been in storage most of its life. Sake cup(see picture 8) it remains in very fine condition as seen in the enlarged pictures. A great way to enjoy your evening sake. This sakazuki comes from a collection of twenty nearly identical cups from the Meiji Era.
