Each item is hand painted blue/white theme with colour detail, and depicts a traditional Japenese scene; trees, snowy mountain tops, and traditional Japenese house with snow-topped roofs. The cup. When held up to the light, reveals the lithophane image of a Geisha Girl's head in the base of the cup as seen in image 1 below. The plate and saucer each have the Kutani mark on the back. Vintage 1950s Japanese "Geisha Girl" or Lithophane Bone China Tea Cup and Saucer
Japanese"Geisha Girl" or Lithophane Mark porcelain Tea Cup and Saucer Offered for sale is this vintage 1950’s miniature tea cup from the owner’s mother. The saucer shows Mount Fuji. A Japanese tea house and Pagoda. The cup repeats the scene with 2 small sailboats on a lake. There are no cracks. Chips or scratches that we could detect. The items are hand-painted and on the top of the handle is a small black line where the craftsperson didn’t quite cover the undercoat with gilding(see photo) Dimensions are: Saucer 3.75” Diameter. Cup 2.5” Diameter, total Hight 2” Below is what we found on the internet about this piece. This porcelain is well known and most often called"Geisha" or"Geisha girl" Porcelain. It is Japanese and my guess is that it is made at the Arita factory specifically for the Western market during ... morethe first decades of the 20 th Century up until the 1940's. Some sources indicate that porcelain with this mark could have been in production as late as in the 1960's. The inspiration for the Japanese"geisha girl" lithophane mark seems more than likely have come to Japan during their early contacts with the West around the turn of the 19th century. All kinds of decorative pieces. Probably mostly lanterns was made in this technique in Europe, with its popularity reaching its peak in the 1870's after which point they gradually went out of fashion. Originally. This technique seems to have been developed by the Koenigliche Porzellan Manufaktur(KPM) of Berlin in the 1820's and later patented in England, by Robert Griffith Jones in 1828. Up for auction/sale is a lithophane very delicate Japanese tea(demitasse size) cup and saucer. The set is used. And the gold trim around the rim of the cup has some wear. Please see the photos to assess the condition of both the cup and saucer. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The cup is very dainty, and as you can see in the photos, translucent. The saucer is 4 1/4" in diameter. The cup is 2 1/4" tall, and a little over 2" in diameter. Together they weigh 2.8 oz. Japanese Kutani Geisha Lithophane Tea set Peacock
This is a nice demitasse set that can be used for tea. Coffee, or chocolate. It is highly decorated with peacock design on all pieces. There is extensive gold detailing throughout. It has a geisha lithophane at the bottom of each cup. See picture of maker mark on bottom of saucer. I always imagine having tea with my grandkids with this set. But have decided it was time to pass on this great set. Peacock symbol in Japan is associated with love. Compassion, watch-fullness, good will, nurturing and kindhearted. Sounds like a mother or grandmother to me. Hope you will fall in love with this set as I have. There are no chips. Cracks or flaws that I can see. DETAILS OF ITEM The Kutani porcelain demitasse cup measures 2 inches tall by 2.38 inches in diameter at its widest girth excluding the handle and the saucer measures 4 inches in diameter. The image on both cup and saucer shows a peacock and Peony flowers hand painted in gold. White and red colors. There is a secret image of a young geisha girl's face on the bottom of the cup and she smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. Lithophane was first invented in 1827. Using the different ... morethickness of the translucent bisque porcelain produces this remarkable three-dimensional image. The artist first carves the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of this work. A plaster casting is taken from the wax mold then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. Rare Set 8 Japanese Lithophane Demi Cups and Saucers All Different Designs
This is a wonderful set of the eagerly collected Japanese lithophanes. A lithophane is a translucent porcelain panel with an impressed design of which the detail is only visible when held up to the light. These sets all have a beautiful lady. It is obvious that each set was chosen by a discerning collector. They are all eggshell thin. The footed cup is 2" x 2" the saucer is 3 3/4" Each cup has a lovely Asian lady inside when held to the light. The sets are decorated in the Satsuma or Kutani style. There are a variety of marks. This is a Kutani kiln Sake cup and the exterior is decorated with hand painted images of a dancing man surrounded by the calligraphy of minute Japanese character letters. Called the Saiji-craft. The inscription next to the dancer reads"Tamura. Oda Seizan was credited to have established and perfected a special craft now known as the Saiji-craft of Kutani around ... more1911. Tamura Kinsei was trained by Seizan. Adding his own design and techniques. He had developed and made the Saiji-craft of Kutani to the level of sophistication today. Now the entire Tamuras are dedicated to this special craft of Kutani ware. There is also an image of a young geisha girl's face on the bottom of the cup and she smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. An etched artwork called Lithophane. Lithophane was first invented in 1827. Using the different thickness of the translucent bisque porcelain produces this remarkable three-dimensional image. The artist first carves the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of this work. A plaster casting is taken from the wax mold then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. The pleasure of this piece is three fold: the great tasting sake. The beautiful girl's image once the sake is gone and the extraordinary craftsmanship. There is some gold loss to the rim; otherwise, the condition is very good and its age is from the late 1950's to the early 1960's.
